"Bluegrass Cafe" Playlist - 6/29/2008

This was James Ward's day to bring you an hour of bluegrass music as a guest DJ at Bluegrass Cafe. James and his mom Cathy were well-prepared with a fine list of James' favorite songs heavily favoring the great female vocalists in the bluegrass music.

James is becoming a veteran guest DJ on Bluegrass Cafe, and is a regular fixture at many bluegrass festivals in the northeast. If you see him, be sure to say "hi".

Jenny Brook Bluegrass Festival --- this weekend!

As always, the calendar has surprised me, but there is one absolutely outstanding BG festival happening this weekend -- June 26-29 -- in Weston, VT. I'll be making my way north tomorrow, and, of course, look forward to seeing a ton of BG friends, and of, fabulous performers at Jenny Brook Family Bluegrass Festival.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 6/22/2008

As Jim mentioned last week, Sunday's show featured Guest DJ #5 at BG Cafe -- Phil Robert [selections noted below in GREEN]. Phil claimed to be pretty nervous before he hit the airwaves during the 5PM hour, but you certainly couldn't hear it in his voice. He did a fine job, as have all of our Guest DJs. It's been great fun listening to the music picked out by all of our Guest DJs -- thanks to all of you who've taken your turn at the mic!

Included on Sunday's show was a bit of new music from the likes of Dan Tyminski (Wheels on Rounder), as well as the Chapmans, and a track from a forthcoming gospel project on Rural Rhythm from the newly-renamed Cody Shuler & Pine Mountain Railroad. We look forward to playing lots more from these performers, as well as the other new music that's always arriving at WHUS.

We also tried to feature music from a few of the performers who'll be at the Jenny Brook Bluegrass Festival this coming weekend -- June 26-29. There is a terrific lineup at this Weston, VT event -- I'll try to post more details in a separate entry later this week....

"Bluegrass Cafe" Playlist - 6/15/2008

The Bluegrass Cafe was visited by guest DJ, William Trickett, who obtained an hour of DJ duties during the WHUS Radiothon in April. When he is not in the WHUS studio, William picks a mighty fine banjo and resophonic guitar.

William played a great selection of bluegrass music, some of which we haven't heard before on the Cafe. One of those seldom-heard songs was by Tony Trischka and the Big Dogs. The producer of that CD saw it on the playlist and had the following comment: "Thanks, Jim. I sent [the] playlist to Tony, and I'm sure he'll be tickled to see that album is still around. A great but shortlived band." The "thank you" actually goes to William.

Amy will be back Sunday, 22 June, so tune in. I think she will have another guest DJ, so it should be interesting.

The mercury has been rising on the thermometer in eastern CT, so we tried to keep that theme going on the radio, too, with some hot Bluegrass on Sunday.

Sorry for being a little late getting this list posted, but it's been busy.

I did a bit of emcee work at the Strawberry Park Bluegrass Festival in Preston, CT, this weekend, so many of the songs I played on Bluegrass Cafe were influenced by the acts that played at the festival.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 5/25/2008

Sunday's show featured the second of our seven Guest DJs at BG Cafe -- Clyde Proch. If you've attended a BG festival in New England over the past 15-20 years, it's pretty likely that you've seen Clyde, as he devotes a good many hours promoting and enjoying Bluegrass. He did an excellent job with his Guest DJ stint -- in fact, he did so well that the phones practically never stopped ringing! Clyde's tunes are marked on the list below in blue. Thanks, Clyde, for your pledge to WHUS during Radiothon, and we look forward to hearing the fine work of our remaining 5 Guest DJs this summer....

In addition to Clyde's hour of tunes, we spent a bit of time on Sunday honoring veterans for Memorial Day. We also got to give away a pair of passes to the big Strawberry Park Bluegrass Festival this coming weekend, as well as a couple of BG CDs from Balsam Range and David Johnson. New music was included a bit, as well, as we played one tune each from the new discs by Canada's Spinney Brothers (their self-released Going Home) and the teenage mandolin picker, Sierra Hull (Secrets on Rounder). Be listening for more from these terrific CDs, as well as several others we've been getting at WHUS over the past couple of weeks.

Incidentally, if you're heading to Strawberry Park this weekend, do be on the lookout for our own Jim Beaver as one of your MCs....

Sunday was a super-busy day at UCONN -- Commencement Day for 2,000+ graduates. That means there was a TON of activity on campus, and no parking to be found. Congratulations to all graduates, but especially to one young man who was a listener of BG Cafe -- Colin from Litchfield. It's always nice to know that there are younger folks who are interested in this music.

We also featured the first of our seven Guest DJs, who had each pledged a certain amount of money to have an hour of their own at the BG Cafe. Following the lead-off set that paid tribute to horse racing (the Kentucky Derby was the day before), we brought you some lesser-played favorites along with some of the latest music, including the debut of the new CD from The Infamous Stringdusters. While those boys are wandering out towards the edges of bluegrass, there is a track or two on their new self-titled CD that carries the bluegrass banner, and we played one of them. The Dusters will be at Podunk this year, so you can hear them do it live when they come around.

"Bluegrass Cafe" Playlist - 4/27/2008

It had been a while since Marti and I had hosted a non-Radiothon show on WHUS, so it was an interesting day getting back into the groove.

I had one unusual request to fulfill leftover from Radiothon: The person who pledged Bluegrass Cafe over our stretch goal did so on the condition I play my banjo on the air, so I completed that request by adding my own banjo part to "The Fox" by Nickel Creek. I always thought that group needed a banjo, so there it was.

I hope you enjoyed the rest of the show in spite of that request.
