"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 3/26/2023

Our last Bluegrass Cafe for March 2023 included lots of fine new Bluegrass music, songs from a couple of favorite LPs, and several songs in remembrance of a fine Bluegrass entertainer who died earlier this week.

During this day's broadcast, we included brand new music from several performers, including Special Consensus, Larry Sparks, Balsam Range, Pam Gadd, Darin & Brooke Aldridge, and Boone & Foster, as well as recent 2023 releases from Joe Mullins & the Radio Ramblers, Jason Barie, the Gibson Brothers, Greg Blake & Hometown, Starlett & Big John, and Rock Hearts.

The entertaining Ron Spears died earlier this week at the age of 69, and so, we remembered him by playing lots of fine songs that he wrote and performed over the years.  This Utah native played with several bands, and also, made several recordings of his own.  We included music Ron Spears recorded when he worked with Special Consensus, David Parmley & Continental Divide, and his last band, Fast Track, as well as covers of his material by the Bluegrass Cardinals, Lou Reid & Carolina, and the Bluegrass Patriots.  Rest in peace, Ron Spears.

And a couple of times a year, I just have to play songs from a couple of beloved LPs that have never been released in compact disc in their entirety:  the self-titled Rounder debut recording from the Johnson Mountain Boys, as well as their 1982 follow-up recording, "Walls Of Time."  Still delightful after all these years...  :)

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 3/19/2023

On this last full day of "Winter" (we really haven't had much winter weather in eastern Connecticut this season), we opened our Bluegrass Cafe with songs celebrating Spring!  Bring on the flowers!  Welcome back, baseball!  At this point, it will be nice to see some green outside instead of just drab old grays and browns.  

During our show, we celebrated the mid-March birthdays of two important members of the Country Music Hall of Fame:  Carl Smith (March 15, 1927 - January 16, 2010) and Charley Pride (March 18, 1934 - December 12, 2020).  These two even recorded some Bluegrass songs during their careers, though they didn't really record them in a "Bluegrass" style.  Still, their songs have often been recorded by Bluegrass performers, so we heard several songs from each legend's repertoire.  

Newer music on our show this week included selections from Carl Bentley, Jason Barie, Starlett & Big John, Joe Mullins & the Radio Ramblers, Billy Strings, Michael Cleveland, Greg Blake & Hometown, and the Gibson Brothers.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 3/12/2023

It was good to be back on the air for this Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe.  After a fall  on February 28th left me with a pretty deep knee cut, it wasn't possible to do a live radio show on March 5th.  I'm working my way back to "normal" now, so I couldn't miss presenting today's live program.  Hope you enjoyed it.

We spent some time on Sunday remembering Jim Sharpley of Still Pickin', as Jim died suddenly at his winter home in Florida on Thursday.  I've had the pleasure of working with Jim for the last several years at the Podunk Bluegrass Festival.  He was a very nice guy with a wonderful sense of humor and a genuine love for Bluegrass music.  He will be greatly missed.

We also remembered the wonderful Bluegrass songwriter -- Bill Castle -- as he died at the age of 89 at the end of February.  Many performers have recorded Bill Castle-penned songs over the last several years, and we shared many of them on the air on Sunday.

And there was a bit of newer music to share, as well, with tunes from Joe Mullins & the Radio Ramblers, Sister Sadie, Jeff Parker & Company, Rock Hearts, the Churchmen, and Larry Sparks.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 2/26/2023

During Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe -- our last Sunday together in the month of February --  we celebrated the birthdays of two members of the Country Music Hall of Fame and shared a couple of brand new songs, too.

The Country Hall of Famers were born one day and about 150 miles apart, but both are now enshrined for eternity in the Hall of Fame:  Faron Young (February 25, 1932 - December 10, 1996) and Johnny Cash (February 26, 1932 - September 12, 2003).  Like many country stars, many of the songs in the respective catalogs of these two singers have been recorded in a Bluegrass style.  As we often do, we decided to spotlight some of these Bluegrass covers to honor the singers.

There was also a little bit of new music to share from Danny Paisley (with Sage Palser) and Rick Faris.  We also included newer music from Jason Carter, Billy Strings, Michael Cleveland, and Jason Barie.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 2/19/2023

For Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe, we included nearly 30 minutes' worth of music from five different records.  This looks to be a continuing occasional feature every few works in 2023.  Today's albums were from Lester Flatt & Earl Scruggs, the Stanley Brothers, Benny & Vallie Cain, the Osborne Brothers, and the Country Gentlemen.

There were lots of mid-February Bluegrass birthdays to celebrate on this day, as well, as we played songs from Mark Newton, Claire Lynch, and four important Bluegrass banjo pickers:  Little Roy Lewis, Don Reno, Ralph Stanley, and Pete Wernick.  

New music was highlighted from the likes of Michael Cleveland, Starlett & Big John, Daryl Mosley, Chris Jones & the Night Drivers, and Audie Blaylock & Redline.

And we pulled out the "Spotlight Letter" occasional feature this week.  Letter F (for "February") was chosen, and to that end, we shared music from "F" performers including Front Range, Flatt Lonesome, Bela Fleck, Lester Flatt (of course!), Aaron Foster, Feller & Hill, Front Range, Rick Faris, the Forbes Family, the Feinberg Brothers, and several others.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 2/12/2023

Our February 12th Bluegrass Cafe was filled with songs about love (mostly positive love stories, even), plus birthday tributes to lots of Bluegrass mid-February birthday celebrants, and a whole bunch of new music, too.  Hope you were able to join us.

In honor of Valentine's Day this week, we included several different sets of
mostly-love songs.  We didn't go completely "sunshine & roses" love songs, but most of them were pretty positive stories.  

There was newer music this week, as well, with selections from Mo Pitney, Donna Ulisse, the Larry Stephenson Band, Tim Stafford & Thomm Jutz, Curtis Vestal, and Nedski & Mojo.  Also, we celebrated several February birthdays, including those of several Bluegrass Hall of Fame members (Jim McReynolds, Red Allen, Dudley Connell, David McLaughlin).  We remembered two Country Music Hall of Fame members born in February, as well (Ernest Tubb, Boudleaux Bryant).

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 2/5/2023

In addition to sharing newer music and classic favorites during Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe, we also did something we hadn't done on the radio in several years:  played music (almost) exclusively from albums (vinyl, LPs -- whatever you want to call them) for almost thirty minutes.  This doesn't seem like it should be a big deal, but broadcasting using only turntables and records is challenging!  Still, it's a good skill to practice once in a while.  And it was fun to play these records from Fred Pike, Sam Tidwell & the Twin River Boys, Bill Emerson & Cliff Waldron, the Seldom Scene, Jim & Jesse & the Virginia Boys, and the Country Gentlemen.

Our newer and/or recent music came from the likes of Blue Highway, Joe Mullins & the Radio Ramblers, Lori King & Junction 63, Rock Hearts, Greg Blake & Hometown, Tim Graves & the Farm Hands, Billy Strings, and the Crowe Brothers.

Before it's time for another Sunday edition of our Bluegrass Cafe, guess I need to post this playlist from our January 29th show!

The show featured music from a few of the SPBGMA Award winners for 2023.  The Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass Music in America held their annual gathering over the weekend, and their fan-voted awards were given out on Saturday evening.  The big winners were the Kody Norris Show, but other award winners from whom we heard included Jaelee Roberts, Seth Mulder & Midnight Run, the Po' Ramblin' Boys, and Balsam Range.  If you'd like to know more about all of the winners, click here.  

There was a good bit of new music to share this week.  We shared songs from the long-awaited new recording from the Gibson Brothers ("Darkest Hour" on their own label, Bull Run Records), as well as new selections from the Tim Raybon Band, the Farm Hands, Route 3, Darren Nicholson, and Billy Strings.  

And if all of that wasn't enough, we had a few Bluegrass birthdays to celebrate, including those of four elite members of the Bluegrass community who were all born on February 1st:  Del McCoury (1939), Tom Gray (1941), David Parmley (1959), and Jason Carter (1973).  Other birthday celebrants in this show were Becky Buller and Lynwood Lunsford.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 1/22/2023

Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe featured a lot of fine music...of course!  

Among the music we shared were several songs featuring the Bluegrass Hall of Fame banjo picker, Bill Emerson, who would have turned 85 years old on January 22nd.  

We also included brand-new music from the Kody Norris Show, Volume Five, Eddie Ray Buzzini, Irene Kelley, and Shane McGeehan.
