"Bluegrass Cafe" Playlist - 9/30/07 (abbreviated)

UCONN soccer took over WHUS for most of the afternoon and it knocked off the entire Red Rooster Party and nearly two hours of Bluegrass Cafe. For those of you who caught our last and only hour, thanks for your perseverance, and I hope you enjoyed my selection of mostly new music.

About that music: Sunday was one year since Josh Graves passed away (and last Thursday would have been his 79th birthday). It was also Marty Stuart's 49th birthday, and the 49th anniversary of the first recording of The Stanley Brothers' "How Mountain Girls Can Love." We honored all these events with appropriate songs by and about these artists.

We also debuted the new CD from Larry Cordle and Lonesome Standard Time by playing a track written by Chris Stuart about "The First Train Robbery."

Two (mostly) Bluegrass fill-ins at WHUS...

Howdy -

While I haven't been on the air doing Bluegrass Cafe since September 9th, if you're a regular listener of WHUS, you may have heard me for the last two Tuesday afternoons (9/11 & 9/18) playing a mix of what turned out to be mostly Bluegrass, plus a few classic country singers thrown in for good measure. This is not a new show -- I was just filling in some vacated spots before the official Fall Semester schedule change. Jim & Marti are very good WHUS staff members, and they do LOTS of fill-ins at different times of the day (and night), but I don't often get to do it.

(By the way, the WHUS Fall Schedule includes both BG Cafe in its regular Sundays, 4-7PM timeslot, as well as Jim & Marti's Red Rooster Party on Sundays, 2-4PM. Of course, all bets are off if there are sports preemptions).

So, the playlists posted here in this message are not from BG Cafe exactly, but they do include some good tunes you may or may not get to hear on the regular Sunday show. Read on, if you're interested....

"Bluegrass Cafe" Playlist 9/16/2007

Marti and I had a wonderful day in the WHUS studio bringing you our mix of new and old bluegrass music, augmented by a bowl of strawberry chocolate chip cookies brought to us by another WHUS DJ (DJ Civil) who thanked us for filling in for him a few times recently. Life is good!

We had a few features during the show, including some old and new Larry Sparks, some songs spanning the history of Lonesome River Band, a couple of new songs from the brand new Seldom Scene CD, and a couple from Jeremy Stephens and Tom Mindte and their latest project. If you were listening closely, you also heard a not-yet-released track from Rhonda Vincent. We also featured a few songs from the Steep Canyon Rangers, one of our favorite young bands.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 9/9/2007

Two weeks away from using new equipment that you're not quite used to can be a mighty long time. Despite that fact, though, I think Sunday's Cafe progressed in a relatively smooth fashion. We squeezed in a ton of great Bluegrass -- some new, some old, and some "in between." Hope you enjoyed something you heard somewhere along the way.

Jim & Marti will join you for next Sunday's show, but do keep your ears on WHUS from time to time during the week (if you don't already, that is). You just might hear one of us filling in for other DJs as the summer schedule changes over to the fall schedule sometime around September 19th. In fact, if you're able, listen in on Tuesday, 9/11 from 1-3PM, as I'll be playing some Bluegrass (and maybe other things that aren't quite BG). The Labor Day weekend brought superb New England weather, so we hope you had us tuned in on your portable or car radios while out enjoying the great holiday weekend. We sure had a great afternoon bringing the bluegrass to Eastern Connecticut (and the world through whus.org). Trainee Justin also got some time behind the mic.

Of note, we played a track from the brand new CD from Ricky Skaggs and the Whites. It just might be some of the best music Ricky has released in a while.

Jim and Marti took at turn at the microphones after spending most of the previous two weeks enjoying Canyon Country in Northern Arizona and a bit of Las Vegas.

We were mentoring future WHUS DJ, Justin, for part of the show, and he did a great job on the occasion of his first time at the controls.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 8/19/2007

As usual, Sunday's show went by in a whirlwind, and was a whole lot of fun (for me, anyway). We paid tribute to yet another country legend whose material has been covered numerous times in the Bluegrass world, Buck Owens (born August 12, 1929). We even included a track from Buck's 1971 Bluegrass album, Ruby & Other Bluegrass Specials. Granted, Buck's version of Bluegrass sounded nothing like Bill Monroe, but the effort seemed sincere enough, and the record was another #1 for Buck & the Buckaroos.

We also included a couple of tunes from some legendary characters from the New England Bluegrass world, Fred Pike, Sam Tidwell, & the Kennebec Valley Boys. Sam celebrated a birthday last week, as well.

Jim & Marti should be back in the Cafe with you next Sunday, and I'll be seeing you again in a couple of weeks.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 8/12/2007

While Marti was behind the board last week (and did a top-notch job) for the "inaugural" BG Cafe from our new studios at WHUS, yesterday, it was my turn. It was fun trying to make sure we left only a teensy bit of dead air. There's still a lot to learn about our new equipment, but I think we'll all manage just fine....

In addition to listening to a couple of cuts each from two fabulous brand new recordings -- "Lovin' Pretty Women" by the Steep Canyon Rangers and "Good News" by the Charlie Sizemore Band -- we paid tribute to the King of Bluegrass, Jimmy Martin, who would have celebrated his 80th birthday on August 10th. Jimmy may no longer be with us, but his music and his influence will certainly go on forever.

"Bluegrass Cafe" Playlist 8/5/2007

The first show in the new WHUS studios came on the heels of the excellent Podunk Bluegrass Festival in East Hartford. I got to the new Student Union studio just minutes after Marti kicked it off, and Marti pretty much carried the day by selecting and playing most of the music. "Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 7/29/2007

We always enjoy giving things away to our listeners, and Sunday's show included a whole lot of that. We talked on the phone to two promoters of upcoming BG festivals in New England, and were able to give away passes to each festival. First up was Roger Moss of the Podunk Bluegrass Festival in East Hartford (August 2-5), and then came Rich Kendall of the Lake Champlain Bluegrass Festival in Alburg, Vermont (August 10-12). Both festivals feature top-notch entertainment, and should be a whole lot of fun. Thanks to both Roger & Rich for coming on the air with us, and for sharing some passes with our listeners.

In addition, we were able to give away a couple of full-carload passes for the upcoming Tolland County 4H Fair in Vernon, CT (August 10-12). Bluegrass from Winsted's Northernbound will be featured at the fair on Friday, August 10th. Thanks to our listeners, the Trickett Family, for providing us with these passes.

If all of these giveaways weren't enough, we were also able to squeeze in a teeny bit of new music from two outstanding students of the Ralph Stanley School of Bluegrass: Charlie Sizemore ("Good News" comes out on Rounder in August), and James Alan Shelton ("Walking Down The Line" is James's outstanding new solo CD).

Sunday's show marked our last broadcast from our "temporary" broadcast home (4+ years) on UCONN's Horsebarn Hill. Beginning this Wednesday, August 1st, we'll be moving into our brand new studios at UCONN's Student Union. Marti will be with you for the "inaugural" edition of BG Cafe from that new broadcast home next Sunday, August 5th.

Guests & goodies for listeners this Sunday, 7/29!

Of course, we'd like to believe that you listen to the Bluegrass Cafe every Sunday from 4-7PM 'cause you think Jim, Marti, and I are charming, knowledgeable, and, of course, that we play some mighty fine Bluegrass music. That's probably not true, but we'd like to believe it, anyway. In addition to those reasons for listening, we're going to add TWO more reasons this Sunday.
