"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 11/3/2013

On Sunday's show, we had a couple of important "goals" that we wanted to accomplish, and for the most part, I think they were pretty-well completed.

Up first, we wanted to remember a couple of important birthdays:  both of gentlemen who were born in 1937, just three days apart.  Country Music Hall of Famer Bill Anderson (born November 1, 1937) is definitely NOT a Bluegrass performer or singer (despite the fact that he has recorded a "Bluegrass" album).  Still, many of his songs -- both the older ones and newer ones that he continues to write today -- have been recorded in the Bluegrass world, so we shared a few of those from performers as varied as the Del McCoury Band, James King, the Osborne Brothers, Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, and the Johnson Mountain Boys.

For my money, one of the best
vocalists in all of Bluegrass -- Allen Mills.
Another wonderful performer celebrating a birthday this week is one of the founders of longtime Virginia band, the Lost & Found.  Allen Mills (born November 4, 1937) is the primary songwriter and lead vocalist with L&F, and to my ear, he has one of the most distinctive vocal deliveries in all of Bluegrass.  In addition, Mr. Mills is a terrific songwriter, and has a couple of wonderful Bluegrass classics in his songbook, including "Love Of The Mountains" and "Wild Mountain Flowers For Mary."  Terrific stuff!

In addition to celebrating the birthdays of Bill Anderson and Allen Mills, we remembered the passing of Alex Campbell, a noted Bluegrass performer and promoter who died on October 24th at the age of 90.  Mr. Campbell made a few different records with some notable Bluegrass performers, including Ted Lundy and his very own sister, Ola Belle Reed.  While we played a couple of songs from Alex & Olabelle & the New River Boys, be sure to tune into Jim in the "Bluegrass Cafe" next week for more music from this Bluegrass pioneer.

Hope you enjoyed something you heard on the air on Sunday, and be sure to join Jim next week once more for another visit in the Bluegrass Cafe.

Enjoy the week!

"Bluegrass Cafe" Playlist - 10/27/2013 - Gordon Pike & Darlene Champagne

Hi Folks.
Earl Pike, Darlene Champagne, Connie Smith, Fred Pike
Gordon Pike and Darlene Champagne

The centerpiece of this show was an interview, along with relevant music, of Gordon Pike and Darlene Champagne, both of whom grew up playing and recording with The Pike Brothers or The Pike Family & The Pine Hill Ranchers in Eastern Connecticut in the 1960s and 1970s.

In our usual fashion, we brought a good number of new songs to the show along with some classic and rare gems.  The new included music from NewTown, Reno & Harrell, Little Roy Lewis and Lizzy Long, WMD Bluegrass Band from Colorado, the incredible banjo picker Tim Weed, Junior Sisk and Joe Mullins, Mark Newton & Steve Thomas, Terry Baucom, and Alex Leach.

Our Heritage Corner music was supplied by Ralph Stanley from the period when Sammy Adkins was his lead singer, Carl Story, Fred Pike & Al Hawkes, The Country Pardners, The Carter Family, Jimmie Williams & Red Ellis, and The Lilly Brothers & Don Stover.

Wyatt, Jon, Jackson, & Luke Weiland, and Sam Wachtler on guitar

Listeners also got a chance to hear my father tell a story that was recorded 19 years ago about a "musical" event that occurred in his youth during WW2 in North Carolina.  Let's just say when the man says "dance faster" you should probably head for the door!  My dad celebrated his 87th birthday on this day.

Amy will be back next week, so be sure to tune in!

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 10/20/2013

Sunday's show was a special one for a couple of different reasons:  we remembered the 100th birthday of Louis Marshall "Grandpa" Jones with a good bit of his music; we shared new music from wonderful new projects by Edgar Loudermilk and the duo of Junior Sisk & Joe Mullins; and we visited with the Queen of Bluegrass, Rhonda Vincent.  That's a lot of stuff to cram into just three hours, but I think we were able to get it all in...

On my reading list:  the Grandpa Jones autobiography
published in 1984 and co-authored by noted
country music historian, Charles K. Wolfe.
First up, we included five songs that were either written or performed by the one and only Grandpa Jones, who would have celebrated his 100th birthday on October 20th.  While the man who was given his "Grandpa" moniker at the ripe old age of 22 wasn't exactly a Bluegrass performer, the influence of this Country Music Hall of Famer is felt even today, fifteen years after his passing in 1998.  In addition to hearing Grandpa singing three of his classic songs, including his best-known composition, "Eight More Miles To Louisville," we also heard two more of his songs performed by Norman Blake & Tony Rice as well as Joe Mullins & the Radio Ramblers.

Another reading list selection from 2013 and Murphy Hicks Henry.
No surprise, there's a separate chapter featuring Rhonda Vincent.
The hard-working, super-busy Rhonda Vincent will be performing in Hamden, Connecticut this coming Saturday, and we enjoyed visiting with her a bit on the telephone during Sunday's show.  Rhonda told us about her newest project, as well as her upcoming recording (called "Only Me") to be released on January 28, 2014, and how she gets to host her own radio show on 650AM/WSM in Nashville on the last Thursday of each month.  Very cool!  Rhonda & the Rage will play a show for GuitarTown CT Productions on Saturday, October 26th at the Unitarian Society Hall.  For more info on the show, click here, and if you're curious to know what's going on in the busy life of Rhonda Vincent, click here.  Big thanks to show promoter Chris Wuerth for allowing us to give away a couple of tickets to Rhonda's show next week, too!

There was a little bit of new music to share from a couple of great new recordings, too:  Edgar Loudermilk's second solo recording from Mountain Fever Records, "My Big Chance Tomorrow," and a traditional recording of Bluegrass covers from the reigning IBMA Male Vocalist of the Year, Junior Sisk, along with his Rebel Records labelmate, Joe Mullins.  Their joint recording venture is called "Hall Of Fame Bluegrass!"  It's always great to hear and share new music, especially when it's top-notch quality like these two projects.

Hope you enjoyed something you heard on Sunday's show, and that you'll make it a point to join Jim for another fun edition of Bluegrass Cafe next Sunday afternoon.

Have a good week!

Amy

"Bluegrass Cafe" Playlist - 10/13/2013 Jim Shumate, Mark Newton & Steve Thomas

Hi Folks.

Jim Shumate in 1980
This show revolved around two key events, one being the loss of pioneering first generation bluegrass fiddler Jim Shumate  (Oct. 21, 1921 - Oct. 10, 2013,) and the other being a live interview with Mark Newton and Steve Thomas -- veteran bluegrassers with very long resumes who have released a collaborative album titled "Reborn."

Flatt & Scruggs' first band
Jim Shumate is on fiddle
We played a couple of classic cuts from Flatt & Scruggs' first recording session that had Jim Shumate on fiddle, and throughout the show we played fiddle tunes from Jim's 1980 fiddle album "Bluegrass Fiddle Supreme."

We also played music from many of Mark Newton's past projects along with songs from his and Steve Thomas' album "Reborn."

Check out their video for "Old McDonald Sold The Farm":

Other newer music included selections from a new album from Jeff Scroggins & Colorado, Noam Pikelny's excellent new Kenny Baker tribute album, Alex Leach, Larry Efaw & The Bluegrass Mountaineers, James King's new album of country songs done bluegrass style (as well as an oldie from one of James' 1988 LPs), Del & Dawg (Del McCoury and David Grisman), Peter Rowan, Locust Ridge, Lou Reid and Carolina, Kim Robins, and Don Rigsby.

Besides the Flatt & Scruggs and James King oldies, The Heritage Corner included old recordings from Charlie Moore, Jimmie Williams & Red Ellis, and Doc Watson.

Don't miss James & Cathy Ward on Thursday afternoon with their program, "Bluegrass Rules," when they will bring you the rebroadcast of the 2013 IBMA Awards Show.

Amy will be with you next Sunday, so be sure to tune in.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 10/6/2013

While I was really only gone from the WHUS airwaves for about three weeks, it seems to me like it has been a bit longer than that.  With so much brand new music to play, the show could have easily been an hour or two longer, but we still were able to squeeze in most of the music we picked out for today.  Hope you enjoyed it...

Always fun to see the Gibsons win awards!
The show started with several folks who took home IBMA Awards at the ceremonies held in Raleigh, NC on September 26th, both yearly achievement awards (Balsam Range for Album of the Year; Claire Lynch and Junior Sisk as Female & Male Artists, respectively; the Gibson Brothers for Entertainer, Vocal Group, Songwriter for Eric Gibson, and Song of the Year for "They Called It Music") and entrance into the Bluegrass Hall of Fame (for Tony Rice, as well as the terrific fiddler for the Foggy Mountain Boys, the late Paul Warren).  Congratulations to all of the winners!

October 6th seems to be a big day to celebrate birthdays in the World of Bluegrass, as we played several songs from birthday celebrants today, including Terry Baucom, Ray Deaton, Johnny Williams, Julie Venne Hogan of BearTracks, and Connecticut's Dick Bowden.  Happy Birthday to each of them!

As always, there was a really healthy portion of brand new music to share, and we were able to do that by playing songs from new or forthcoming projects by the Del McCoury Band, James King, Junior Sisk & Joe Mullins, Noam Pikelny, Lou Reid & Carolina, and the Missy Werner Band.  What a great haul -- you'll be hearing a whole lot more from all of these projects in future weeks of the show.

Hope you enjoyed the show today, and be sure to join Jim next Sunday for another edition of "Bluegrass Cafe."

Enjoy the week!

Amy

"Bluegrass Cafe" Playlist - 9/15/2013 - More Old Vinyl

Hi Folks.

I was back in the saddle at Bluegrass Cafe after being in the saddle at Red Rooster Party with Marti for the summer.  I made it challenging by bringing in a big load of rare vinyl that I almost got half-way through.

The reach back for this show was intended not only to get grounded and focused on real bluegrass again, but also to feature some fine regional bands from outside of New England that are making some excellent music that deserves to be heard. This included music from Alex Leach -- a Tennessee DJ who is currently Ralph Stanley II's banjo picker -- and Larry Efaw from Ohio.

We also briefly celebrated the birthdays of Bill Monroe (9/13), Bill Harrell (9/15), and Roy Acuff (9/15) with related songs -- the latter covers from The Old Time Bluegrass Singers and The Tennessee Mafia Jug Band.

Amy and I will both be away for the next two Sundays, between which we will be in Raleigh for the IBMA festivities, so you can look forward to James and Cathy Ward hosting Bluegrass Cafe for the next two weeks.  Amy should be back October 6th.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 9/8/2013

Another school year has begun at the University of Connecticut, and with it, the WHUS schedule has changed once again.  We're happy to tell you that Bluegrass Cafe will continue in its Sunday slot from 4-7PM, and we're even happier to tell you that Jim Beaver will be returning to host the show on alternating weeks with me, with his first Sunday back happening on September 15th.  Hooray!  We're also pleased to let you know that James Ward and his mom, Cathy Ward, will continue their Bluegrass Rules program for this semester -- their show will air on Thursdays from 3-4PM.  For more information on the rest of the WHUS Fall broadcast schedule, click here.

Happy 102nd to William Smith Monroe!
Sunday's show was a fun one to share some music from the Father of Country Music, Jimmie Rodgers, who was born on September 8, 1897.  Several of Jimmie's blue yodels have been given the Bluegrass treatment over the years, so we picked out just a couple of them to play.  This is also the week to remember and celebrate the Father of Bluegrass Music, Bill Monroe (September 13, 1911-September 9, 1996).  We did that by playing a few of the songs written in tribute to Bill Monroe since his passing, as well as devoting the entire gospel set to the gospel music of Monroe, both performed by him with the Blue Grass Boys, and by other bands, as well.

The first Sunday in September following Labor Day has been dedicated as
Me with the only grandparent I really remember,
my paternal grandmother, Fannie Burgess.
National Grandparents' Day in the United States.  While this is not as big of a holiday as, say, Mother's Day or Father's Day and is not really widely celebrated (if at all), it seemed appropriate to break out a few Bluegrass tunes which have been written over the last several years in celebration of grandmothers and grandfathers.  These heartfelt tributes came to us from BearTracks, the Gibson Brothers, Springfield Exit, and the Spinney Brothers.

We also kept a little time to play some newer Bluegrass music from a few different projects which have not yet been officially released, including the much-talked-about "Bluegrass Album" from country singer, Alan Jackson.  We played one song from that album, as well as a song from the new Rounder CD from the Steep Canyon Rangers, "Tell The Ones I Love."  Other newer music came to us from the Boxcars, Danny Paisley & the Southern Grass, the Spinney Brothers, Volume Five, Tom Neal, Donna Ulisse, Big Country Bluegrass, Peter Rowan, the Tuttles with A.J. Lee, Marty Raybon & Full Circle, the Expedition Show, Chris Jones & the Night Drivers, and Jeff Parker.

Hope you have a great week -- and that you'll be certain to join Jim next Sunday for another edition of Bluegrass Cafe!

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 9/1/2013

Happy Birthday to Roger Williams!
Here's the short-and-sweet lowdown on Sunday's radio show:  We began with a few tunes related to the working man -- and woman -- in honor of Labor Day.  Other program highlights included several songs played in tribute to New England resophonic guitar master Roger Williams on his birthday, as well as newer musical selections from recent (or soon-to-be released) recordings from the likes of the Gibson Brothers, Claire Lynch, Flatt Lonesome, Darin & Brooke Aldridge, the Stetson Family, the Expedition Show, and Chris Jones & the Night Drivers.

Enjoy your week!

Amy O.
