Playlist - 3/6/2016

Hi Folks.

Sunday was not a good day for music, but if you liked listening to a quasi-professional college basketball team pound some other college team more interested in academics by 50 points, then you would have really enjoyed the programming.

For me, I enjoyed what time remained after the game to put something really good on the airwaves. 

We introduced new music from The Rice Menzone Alliance.  That's Wyatt Rice and New England's own Dan Menzone on a new record released by the Mountain Fever folks.  You can expect much more from this fine album in the coming months.



We also introduced new music from Circa Blue, and a new gospel recording from Kentucky group Turning Ground. We interviewed banjo picker Mike Daniels with Turning Ground a while back, and their new album is excellent.

The sports preemptions are heavy this time of year, and we are not real sure we will have a show next week, but if we do, Amy will bring it to you.  Check out our page on Facebook for more up-to-date information.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 2/28/2016

There was a hint of Spring in the air in eastern Connecticut on Sunday afternoon, so we started the show with songs that were representative of that time of year.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 2/14/2016

Look high and low, but you're not
likely to find a more positive
Bluegrass "love" album than this.

On this Valentine's Day edition of Bluegrass Cafe, our sort of unofficial theme was "sunshine and roses."  We also threw in quite a few "heart" songs -- whether those hearts were filled with love or broken by a lost love.

Joe Val (1926-1985)

During this weekend, the 31st annual Joe Val Bluegrass Festival was taking place in nearby Framingham, Massachusetts.  We heard songs from a few of the JV performers this year, including Junior Sisk & Ramblers Choice, the Spinney Brothers, Del McCoury, and the Gibson Brothers.  For good measure, we also shared a few songs from the one-and-only Joe Val.

WHUS "Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 1/31/2016

In short, Sunday's show included a few songs celebrating Martin guitars (in honor of C.F. Martin's birthday on January 31st), as well as birthday songs for Del McCoury, Tom Gray, David Parmley, Jason Carter, and Becky Buller.  Also, we took some inspiration from seeing the cover of the February 2016 issue of Bluegrass Unlimited.  The cover photo and feature article's subject is the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's 50 years in the music business, and no article about this legendary band can be complete without mentioning their seminal work, the 3-record set:  "Will The Circle Be Unbroken."  We included music from that collection released in 1972, as well as songs from the two other "Circle" records that followed in 1989 and 2002.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 1/24/2016

My favorite kind of Snow...

With all of the snow covering the East coast this weekend, it seemed only appropriate to start Sunday's show with a few snow-related songs.  Our definition of "snow" was sort of broadly interpreted, as not only did we include songs about "snow" as frozen precipitation, but also "snow" as a proper name.  In addition, we shared a few Bluegrass versions of songs from the catalog of my favorite "snow":  Hank Snow. 

In addition -- and for no particular reason -- we included a whole bunch of songs about trains.  One of these days, we could probably put together a whole series of shows devoted to the subject of trains, but for now, we stuck with just a set.  Stay tuned for more...

Laurie Lewis & the Right Hands have a brand new recording done in tribute to Hazel Dickens & Alice Gerrard called "The Hazel And Alice Sessions."  A couple of the songs from that collection were featured on Sunday, and no doubt, many more from the collection will be on the program in future weeks.  Other newer music in Sunday's show came from the Blue Canyon Boys, the Grascals, the Kathy Kallick Band, Danny Paisley & the Southern Grass, Charm City Junction, the Hot Flashes, and Russell Moore & IIIrd Tyme Out.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 1/17/2016

It was back to three hours of our Bluegrass Cafe on Sunday afternoon, so we made sure to fill it with lots of  fine music -- some new, some classic, but we hope you enjoyed all of it!

To start the program, we heard three songs from the Seldom Scene, as it was announced late last week that Ben Eldridge -- the Scene's banjo picker and the only original member of the band that was formed in 1971 -- was retiring.  It's always good to see Bluegrass (and really, ANY type of music) performers be able to retire when they are ready to retire.  Best wishes to this Bluegrass Hall of Famer, and thanks for the wonderful years of music!  It was also announced that Rickie Simpkins would be joining the Scene full-time.  If you've followed Bluegrass for a while, you may remember Rickie from his work with both the Tony Rice Unit and the Virginia Squires.  

Sunday's show was a good one to introduce some new Bluegrass, too.  We included songs from two recordings that will be released later this year (from Edgar Loudermilk, as well as Junior Sisk & Ramblers Choice), as well as newer music from projects by the Grascals, Charm City Junction, John Bowman, the Kathy Kallick Band, and Danny Paisley & the Southern Grass.

Other "special" selections from Sunday included several tracks from an LP on Rounder featuring recordings made by the Osborne Brothers & Red Allen in 1956 and 1957, as well as several songs played in celebration of Dolly Parton, as she will celebrate her 69th birthday on January 19th.  

And for fun, we got to give away a couple of pairs of tickets to the upcoming January 22nd show at the lovely Infinity Music Hall in Norfolk, CT featuring the always-entertaining Gibson Brothers.  If you'd like more information on the show, find it by clicking here.

Happy New Year, everyone!  Our first Bluegrass Cafe broadcast of 2016 focused a tiny bit on some of our favorite recordings of 2015 from several performers including Danny Paisley & the Southern Grass, David Peterson, the Seth Sawyer Band, the Gibson Brothers, Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, the Kathy Kallick Band, Alan Bibey & Grasstowne, Flatt Lonesome, Russell Moore & IIIrd Tyme Out, the Feinberg Brothers, and Feller & Hill.  Should you care to review our list of favorite Bluegrass recordings of 2015, you can click on this link.

In addition to playing songs from some of our 2015 favorites, we also shared a bit of music from two Bluegrass legends who celebrated some big birthdays last year:  Mac Wiseman turned 90 last May, and Curly Seckler marked his 96th birthday on Christmas Day.  Amazing.  

We couldn't let the show pass without remembering a few Bluegrass folks who died in 2015.  While we weren't able to play music from each of these performers and/or songwriters, we always want to remember Dixie Hall, Bill Yates, Benjamin "Tex" Logan, Paul Harvey (of Connecticut band, Traver Hollow), Mike Kropp (of Northern Lights), and a 2015 inductee into the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame, Bill Keith.
