"Bluegrass Cafe" Playlist - 8/16/2009

Hi Folks.

Most of the show was dedicated to various 2009 IBMA Awards nominees. We had several requests that varied the program a bit, and we tried out a few new tunes and lesser-played tunes to measure reaction.

We also featured a few tracks spread out through the show from a 1997 CD from regional band Shady Creek titled "Get Your Feet Wet!" to celebrate Nick Anderson's 2nd annual Shady Creek Music and Homecoming festival the day before. All the members from that CD's band configuration reunited for a performance the previous evening.

There was also a surprise performance by New England bluegrass pioneer, Sam Tidwell, and some of his friends, including former Bluegrass Cafe producer, Myrna Riquier.

Lots of Bluegrass this weekend....

Friday, August 14th -- GRASS ROUTES in Andover, CT -- Andover Gazebo, School Road (located in between the Town Hall & the Andover Elementary School -- School Road is located off of Route 316, which is accessible from Routes 6 & 66). Show is FREE and the music starts at 6:30PM. For more information, call the Andover Public Library at (860)742-7428.

Saturday, August 15th -- BEAR MINIMUM (and possibly a set from the BEAR BRIDGE BAND) in Peru, MA -- Peru Town Pavilion, Route 143, Peru, MA. This is part of the 2nd annual Peru Church Car Show. For more info on the car show, call (413)655-2493. Showtime is 3PM.

Saturday, August 15th -- Lots of bands, including SHADY CREEK, PINE CREEK, CROSSOVER, CHARTER OAK, and SHOREGRASS at the Shady Creek Festival in Plainfield, CT. Music is on Saturday only and starts around 10AM. Donations are accepted. Location is 20 Colbridge Road in Plainfield. For more info, call (860)564-1018.
***Update for 8/14/2009: rumor has it that a certain banjo playing, bona fide "Pioneer of Bluegrass" who hails from the State of Rhode Island will be playing at this festival on Saturday. Stop by to see who it is...

Sunday, August 16th -- A special event at the Firebox Restaurant in Hartford, CT: NICK & DICK & THE RANK STRANGLERS (a "Stanley Brothers experience" type of grouping). Showtime is 5PM, and admission is free. The Firebox is located at 539 Broad Street in Hartford. For more info, call (860)246-1222.

"Bluegrass Cafe" Playlist - 8/9/2009

Hi Folks,

We began the show with a heritage corner tribute to the recently-departed Mike Seeger that began with selections from his two influential Folkways field-recorded LPs, and two of Mike at Newport with The New Lost City Ramblers.

About halfway through the first hour we put Dick Bowden on the air for a great discussion of Stanley music and some banjo pickin'. Dick, whose regular band is The Old Time Bluegrass Singers, is participating in a Stanley tribute show at a Hartford restaurant (The Firebox) next Sunday with a group called "Nick & Dick and the Rank Stranglers", so we had a good time while promoting that show.

We were able to get some new music on that included singles from Darren Beachley, Larry Stephenson with Dailey & Vincent, and a couple from Barry Scott & Second Wind's new CD.

Next week we will be back, or we will have a bluegrass guest fill-in for us. You will just have to tune in to find out.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 8/2/2009

Well, Sunday's show was all about winding down (for me, anyway) from a big weekend of terrific Bluegrass at the 14th annual Podunk Bluegrass Festival in nearby East Hartford. Congratulations to the Podunk Bluegrass Committee -- a non-profit organization in CT -- who organized another terrific festival under less-than-ideal weather conditions. This year's festival had the greatest number of campers ever, so we'll look forward to seeing (and hearing!) what's in store for 2010....

In addition to playing music from a few of the performers featured at Podunk over the weekend, we included a couple of tunes from forthcoming projects by Larry Stephenson, as well as Darren Beachley (both cuts found on Volume 100 of the "Prime Cuts Of Bluegrass"), and music from a California band who concentrates on traditional Bluegrass: Blue & Lonesome.

We also included music from the one and only Neon Valley Boys recording. The Neons were a Rhode Island Bluegrass group in the early 1980s who made just one album, but the members have performed at "reunion" shows from time to time over the past few years, and so, they decided to have that one album remastered and packaged as a CD. Jeffrey Horton, the bass player with the Neons, and later a member of the group Northern Lights, was teaching a harmony workshop at Podunk, and gave me a copy of the remastered CD. Very, very fun music, and certainly as enjoyable in 2009 as it was in 1982 (!) when it was recorded.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 7/26/2009 (plus a fill-in, 7/24/2009)

Hello there -

On Sunday's show, we featured a quick chat with two of the biggest names going in Bluegrass today -- Dailey & Vincent. In their relatively short career working together (first show date in late December 2007), they've already won several awards from both IBMA & SPBGMA, have released two fabulous albums on Rounder Records, and have played on the Grand Ole Opry. If all of that isn't enough, they'll be playing two sets this Saturday, August 1st at the Podunk Bluegrass Festival in nearby East Hartford, CT. Make plans to come out and see D&V, as well as the other fabulous performers at this 14th edition of Podunk, including the Del McCoury Band, Rhonda Vincent, Russell Moore & IIIrd Tyme Out, the Special Consensus, the Steep Canyon Rangers, and lots more.

We gave away our last of 4 one-day passes to Podunk, as well as several CDs. Thanks to everyone who called -- we'll have more CD giveaways over the remaining weeks of summer.

New music was also featured a bit on Sunday, this time from Lou Reid & Carolina and their fine new Rural Rhythm recording, "My Own Set Of Rules." Lou Reid has long been one of my favorite voices in Bluegrass, and this new CD from him and the band doesn't disappoint in any way. Rest assured that you'll be hearing plenty more from this disc in future weeks.

If you're heading to Podunk this coming weekend -- July 30-August 2 -- please be sure to look for Jim & me. We have lots of WHUS goodies for you (pens, stickers, plastic cups), so don't be a stranger!

Programming notes...

This Friday, July 24th, Amy will be doing a fill-in at WHUS during the "Viable Rhythms" timeslot. We'll sort of morph the show -- for the week, anyway -- into a "Viable CLASSIC COUNTRY & BLUEGRASS Rhythms," and will include a chat with a special guest around 2PM. Russell Moore of Russell Moore & IIIrd Tyme Out will join us via the telephone to talk about, among other things, the band's new Rural Rhythm CD, as well as the group's upcoming appearance at the Podunk Bluegrass Festival. If you're in the area and can listen to the radio at work, please feel free to check us out from 1-4PM.

During the normal "Bluegrass Cafe" program time this Sunday, July 26th, we'll also be chatting on the ol' telephone with Dailey & Vincent. In their relatively short time working together, this dynamic duo has won all sorts of awards, have released two top-notch albums, and are also on the bill to play at Podunk on Saturday, August 1st. "Bluegrass Cafe" Playlist - 7/19/2009

We had another gorgeous New England day to have the radio tuned to 91.7 (or the internet browser on www.whus.org) for the best in bluegrass!

Our listeners had an opportunity to win two single day passes to the upcoming Podunk Bluegrass Festival in East Hartford (30 July - 2 Aug) -- congratulations Bernie and Meg -- and we had guest DJ James Ward in the studio programming the middle hour of the show -- an option James selected during the last WHUS Radiothon. James' selections are shown below in bold dark green.

Most of our playlist was new music this week, and the selections prove that bluegrass is alive and well.
