"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 5/31/2026

During our last Bluegrass Cafe program on May 31st, we started off in a "blue" frame of mind, but as the show progressed, we also found time to share newer music AND celebrate the birth anniversaries of two female members of the International Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame, songwriter and Bluegrass champion, Dixie Hall (May 26, 1934 - January 16, 2015) and songwriter and performer Hazel Dickens (June 1, 1925 - April 22, 2011).  It is always a pleasure to feature dynamic females in the World of Bluegrass Music.

While we didn't have any brand-new music to share during our program, we still included recent recordings from several performers, including Laurie Lewis & the Right Hands, Southern Legacy, Isaak Atlas Schwartz, Jaelee Roberts, the Po' Ramblin' Boys, Dale Ann Bradley, Blue Highway, Jason Carter & Michael Cleveland, and Darin & Brooke Aldridge.

Don't forget to join us for our first radio show of June, as we're planning to have a telephone chat with Eric Gibson of the Gibson Brothers.  As you've probably heard, the Gibsons will be returning to perform at the Podunk Bluegrass Festival in Goshen, CT in early August.  Our Bluegrass Cafe airs from 4-7PM, and we're planning to get Eric on the phone at 5PM, so don't miss it!

We'll chat with you again tomorrow!

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 6/1/2025

On the first day of June, we shared lots of songs in honor of a Bluegrass pioneer who would have turned 100 years old on June 1st -- Bluegrass Hall of Famer Hazel Dickens (June 1, 1925 - April 22, 2011).  In addition to being a raw, authentic, honest singer, Hazel was an amazingly wonderful songwriter.  We shared several of her songs on Sunday, including Hazel herself, Hazel with her long-time musical partner, Alice Gerrard, and several Hazel covers from lots of performers, including Flatt Lonesome, the Lynn Morris Band, Laurie Lewis & Kathy Kallick, Missy Raines & Allegheny, James King, and Hot Rize.

New music was a big part of the show, as well, as we included music from recently released- or soon-to-be-released recordings by Danny Paisley, Joe Mullins & the Radio Ramblers, Missy Raines & Allegheny, Route 3, Shawn Lane & Richard Bennett, Ashley Graham, C.J. Lewandowski (with Del McCoury), Becky Buller, and Jason Burleson.

Hope you enjoyed the show, and are enjoying your June, so far!  We'll look forward to having you join us once again this coming Sunday afternoon for our next Bluegrass Cafe.

Have a good week!

Amy O.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 6/2/2024

Our first Bluegrass Cafe for the month of June inspired us to pull out our occasional feature Spotlight Letter of the Week.  In this case, we chose a few "J" tunes from performers like Clay Jones, Carl Jackson, Chris Jones, Lorraine Jordan, Jim & Jesse, and, of course, the Johnson Mountain Boys.

Newer music was on the bill for Sunday's show, as well, and we had some good stuff to share!  We included selections from forthcoming or recently-released recordings by Stephen & Jana Mougin, the Vestal Brothers, Kristy Cox, Bronwyn Keith-Hynes, Laurie Lewis, the Larry Stephenson Band, Tina Adair, and Junior Sisk.

We look forward to our next Bluegrass Cafe visit with you this coming Sunday afternoon from 4-7PM.  Consider joining us, if you're so inclined.

Have a good week!

Amy O.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 7/11/2021 -- All Aboard for a BGC Revisit!

As you likely know, we've been pre-recording our Bluegrass Cafe programs since COVID shut down WHUS in mid-March of 2020.  With the exception of one other week since then, we've made it a goal to produce a brand-new show every week since we started recording shows for broadcast beginning April 19, 2020.  This week, the best laid plans just didn't pan out, as I could not get my recording equipment to sound the way it needed to sound.  So, we pulled out a rerun show for you to (hopefully) enjoy once more.  This show was originally broadcast on May 31, 2020.  We hope to provide a "fresh" and current broadcast next Sunday afternoon -- July 18th.  Hope you'll consider joining us from 4-7PM.

Have a good week!

Amy O.

Bluegrass Cafe playlist -- originally broadcast May 31, 2020

All aboard!  Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe devoted one hour plus to songs about trains -- freight trains, diesel trains, the romance of the train, black trains, midnight trains, glory bound trains -- you name it!  We could easily devote several shows to just this one topic...and may spend another hour in a future program doing just that!

We also paid birthday tribute to the late Hazel Dickens, who was born on June 1, 1925.  The songs of this Bluegrass Hall of Famer continue to be frequently recorded, but on this day's show, Hazel was the featured performer.

There was a bit of newer music to share, too, with a brand-spanking new song from Carolina Blue, as well as new music from the likes of songwriter Eric Brace, Professor Dan Boner, the Feinberg Brothers, High Fidelity, Dale Ann Bradley & Tina Adair, Stephen Mougin, J.B. & Jamie Dailey, and Junior Sisk.

Hope you are enjoying our pre-recorded programs.  We'll continue to keep bringing them to you for as long as we can, but we sure do look forward to the day when the show can once again be broadcast live as it's happening.  In the meantime, be sure to email us at bgcafe@gmail.com and/or visit our Facebook page.

Have a great week, and, as always, stay healthy!

Amy O.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 6/6/2021

As this 59th pre-recorded edition of our Bluegrass Cafe was recorded on June 1st, we felt it was appropriate to share several songs in memory of a member of the Bluegrass Hall of Fame who also happened to be a wonderful songwriter, and one of the first female performers to front her own band:  Hazel Dickens (June 1, 1924 - April 11, 2011).  We included eleven fine songs written and/or performed by her, and one Bill Monroe classic recorded by Hazel and her musical partner, Alice Gerrard.  Fabulous, heartfelt music -- hope you enjoyed it!

In addition to lots of Hazel Dickens songs, we also shared quite a few Bluegrass favorites, and just a few songs from recent (2021) projects, including two songs from a new solo recording by Tina Adair, as well as selections from the Goodwin Brothers, the Lonesome River Band, the Larry Stephenson Band, Danny Paisley & the Southern Grass, Larry Sparks, Joe Mullins & the Radio Ramblers, and two songs from the "Industrial Strength Bluegrass" recording.

Hope you're staying cool on this very warm Sunday, wherever you might be.  Please consider joining me once again one week from today from 4-7PM for another three hours full of fine Bluegrass music.

Enjoy the week!

Amy O.
