"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 9/9/2018

Akira Otsuka with his "Epilogue" CD.

We devoted a good portion of Sunday's show listening to music from one of my favorite recordings of 2018:  "Epilogue:  A Tribute To John Duffey" on Smithsonian Folkways.  John Duffey was a larger-than-life Personality (capital P is intentional) in the World of Bluegrass Music, and this tribute record released nearly 22 years after his passing is a dandy which features more than 50 performers.  The album's co-producer, Akira Otsuka, is a fine musician, and was a great friend and admirer of John Duffey.  He also was our mid-show telephone guest, and we were honored to talk to him about this great record.  Fun stuff!

This kids' book about Big Mon was published in March 2018.
During this second week of September, there were quite a few birthdays to celebrate, including those of Paul Adkins, James King, Bill Harrell, and Lou Reid.  Of course, there is another very important Bluegrass birthday to celebrate this week -- that of the Father Of Bluegrass Music.  Bill Monroe was born on September 13, 1911, and so, we played all Monroe-penned or Monroe-recorded gospel tunes at the end of the show.  We may celebrate Big Mon a bit more in next Sunday's show, too.

Hope you enjoyed the show today, and will consider joining us once again next Sunday afternoon, 4-7PM.

Enjoy the week!
