"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 4/22/2018

What a gorgeous Spring Sunday afternoon in eastern Connecticut!  Hope your Sunday was a pleasant one, too.  Due to a UConn Baseball broadcast, the start of our Bluegrass Cafe was delayed a bit, but we still managed to squeeze in a whole bunch of fine music in our broadcast of 165 minutes.

In addition to sharing a tiny bit of newer music -- selections from recent or soon-to-be-released recordings by Edgar Loudermilk, Rick Lang, Rhonda Vincent (with Dolly Parton), and Becky Buller -- we remembered two musicians who have died this month:  Ernie Thacker and Randy Scruggs.  We celebrated the former by playing music from several different bands in which Ernie Thacker was a member, including Ralph Stanley & the Clinch Mountain Boys, America's Bluegrass Band, and the Ernie Thacker-Junior Blankenship Band.  

As for Randy Scruggs, while this son of Earl really wasn't known as being a "Bluegrass performer," he certainly was a fine producer, songwriter, and musician.  In his honor, we played the 1955 instrumental from Flatt & Scruggs that was named in Randy's honor, "The Randy Lynn Rag," as well as a few selections from a multi-award winning 1989 record which was produced by Randy Scruggs (and featured him playing guitar all the way through):  "Will The Circle Be Unbroken, Volume Two" by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band with several legendary guests.
