As you likely know, the world of Bluegrass Music lost three fine figures during this week just past, including two members of the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame. Fortunately for us, all three of these performers lived long, musical lives: fiddler Fletcher Bright was in his 80s, and Hall of Famers Miggie Lewis (of the Lewis Family) was 91 years old and Curly Seckler was 98. Amazing.
Our primary focus for Sunday's show turned out to be the music of Curly Seckler. It seems like Curly Seckler played music with just about everyone during his nearly 100 years of living including Charlie Monroe, Jim & Jesse, and the Stanley Brothers. Of course, his most notable gig was providing the mandolin chop and singing some fine tenor harmonies to Lester Flatt with the Foggy Mountain Boys. To that end, we shared a whole bunch of songs from those Flatt & Scruggs years, including several songs that were either written or co-written by Curly Seckler. We also included selections from some of Curly's solo albums, his years with the Nashville Grass, and his guest performances on records by David Grisman and Larry Sparks. If you would like to know more about the life of Curly Seckler, be sure to check out the fine 2016 biography of Curly Seckler (Foggy Mountain Troubadour: The Life And Music Of Curly Seckler by Penny Parsons). And, of course, keep listening to his music.
We shared music from some favorite releases of 2017, too. Among them were songs from the great Mac Wiseman autobiography-in-song collection called "I Sang The Song," Bobby Osborne, Ralph Stanley II & the Clinch Mountain Boys, Mile Twelve, Junior Sisk & Ramblers Choice, Big Country Bluegrass, Joe Mullins & the Radio Ramblers, Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, and the Gibson Brothers, just to name a few. We look forward to hearing the new music of 2018, as well.
Thanks for listening to the program in 2017, and we sure hope you'll keep on tuning us in in 2018!
