"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 6/19/2016

Happy Father's Day to all (including to my father,
Alton Orlomoski)!
Sunday's show was just plain packed!  We had songs for Father's Day (of course!), plenty of songs from the songbook of one Lester Raymond Flatt (born June 19, 1914), and we even had a visit with an in-studio visitor.  Phew!

Our Father's Day selections included both songs about fathers and fatherhood, and selections by bands which include Bluegrass dads and their offspring.  In some cases, the song selections fit both categories.  Hope all of the fathers enjoyed their special day today!

To me, it seems like it would be incredibly inappropriate to NOT play the music of Lester Flatt every week on our Bluegrass Cafe.  To that end, we shared several selections from Lester on Sunday, as it would have been his 102nd birthday.  What better excuse does one need?

Recorded in 1965, this album is a must for
fans of New England Bluegrass
Mark Wayne at WHUS,
6/19/2016.
In the middle of the show, we enjoyed an hour-long visit with the one and only Mark Wayne.  If you've been a listener of southern New England-originated Bluegrass over the past 50+ years, you may have heard Mark playing bass and singing with his "beautiful baritone voice" on the 1965 Osage Records recording by Fred Pike, Bill Rawlings & the Twin River Boys:  "Genuine Authentic Bluegrass Folk Music."  My brother, Dave, often played this record around the house as I was growing up, and later, I listened to Mark Wayne on the radio at WCTY in Norwich.  We talked about Mark's involvement with the Twin River Boys, as well as a bit of his radio career and a few adventures.  Hope you enjoyed listening to the show, and big thanks to Mark for joining us!

Forgot to mention on-air, but I'll be doing a Tuesday morning fill-in this week (June 20th) from 8-10AM.  If you'd like to join me for what will probably be a bunch of classic country music and a bit of Bluegrass, please do!  If you're only interested in hearing Bluegrass, be sure to join Jim for next Sunday's edition of Bluegrass Cafe!

Have a good week!

Amy
