"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 11/8/2015

Sunday's edition of Bluegrass Cafe arrived with more vinyl than I've played on the air in years, a few songs in honor of Veterans Day, some new music, and even a few technical difficulties!  It's all part of the "fun" of live radio, right?  You betcha!

Reno & Smiley & the Tennessee Cut-Ups with
young Ronnie Reno on mandolin.
We started the show with several songs from the songbook of Don Reno and Arthur "Red" Smiley.  Was there a special reason for including so many Reno & Smiley tunes today?  Nope!  Do we really need an "excuse" to play this many wonderful recordings?  Nah.  In addition to original recordings from Don & Red & the Tennessee Cut-Ups, we heard covers of Reno & Smiley songs from the Seth Sawyer Band, the Johnson Mountain Boys, David Peterson & 1946, the Traditional Grass, and the Reno Brothers.

We shared a little bit of newer music this week from Bill Runkle & Smith Hollow, Diamond Creek, Donna Ulisse, and Mark Kuykendall, Bobby Hicks & Asheville Bluegrass.  Other 2015 music was also included from the Gibson Brothers, the Feinberg Brothers, and Bill Emerson & Sweet Dixie.

I dug a little bit into my record collection for this show, too, and pulled out a few LPs I'd not heard in a long time.  Among them:  a 1967 recording from Zap Records featuring the Country Gentlemen ("Live From The Stage Of The Roanoke Bluegrass Festival"); Jimmy Gaudreau's 1989 Webco LP, "Classic J.A.G.;" the Nashville Bluegrass Band's "To Be His Child" on Rounder; and a song from a New York performer, John Rossbach & Chestnut Grove.

In honor of the late Bill Hall -- a New England Bluegrass performer who would have turned 80 years old today -- we featured a couple of tracks from his 1984 LP on Old Homestead Records:  "In The Shadow Of The Pines."  And in the spirit of Veterans Day, we included a couple of songs in honor of those who have served.  Thanks to all veterans.

All in all, it was a full day of Bluegrass.  Hope you heard something you enjoyed somewhere along the way, and that you'll be certain to join Jim for next Sunday's edition of the Bluegrass Cafe.

Enjoy the week!
