"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 1/25/2015

Last Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe saw us here in eastern CT preparing for the latest "Storm of the Century" (which, in hindsight, was bad but not quite of "historic" proportions).  While we waited on the weather, we still shared a whole bunch of pretty darn good songs on the radio, and remembered a couple of wonderful folks who both were very important to the World of Bluegrass.

Charlie Waller & Bill Yates
Strawberry Park Bluegrass Festival
May 31, 1987
To celebrate what would have been Charlie Waller's 80th birthday on January 19th, we opened the show with three songs spanning a few of the 40+ years of Country Gentlemen recorded music -- all of them featuring that rich, neither high-nor-lonesome voice.  Since the January 25th show, we've also lost one of Charlie's long-time bandmates in the Country Gents -- Bill Yates.  Sometimes, I feel like I don't play nearly enough Country Gentlemen music on the air -- think I'll try to share a good deal more this year...

On January 16th, Miss Dixie Hall, perhaps with a name not as easily recognized as that of her Country Music Hall of Famer husband, Tom T., died.  Both Miss Dixie and Tom T. have been great champions of Bluegrass music in recent years, with Dixie writing approximately 500 Bluegrass songs which have been recorded by all sorts of performers over the last 15-20 years.  In recent years, it's been a sort of "challenge" to pick up a Bluegrass recording that didn't include at least one song either written or co-written by Miss Dixie.  Jim shared a whole bunch of those songs during the January 18th show, but since Miss Dixie wrote so many fine songs, it was fairly easy to put together another set Miss Dixie originals from a whole bunch of great performers.  We could probably fill another show or two with Dixie Hall music with no repeats.  To read more about the remarkable life of Miss Dixie, check out this fine obituary from the January 17th Tennessean.

Even with these tribute sets, there was still some time for some newer music from performers including Michael Cleveland & Flamekeeper, Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, the Seldom Scene, Hot Rize, the Earls Of Leicester, the Spinney Brothers, the Kevin Prater Band, Laurie Lewis & Kathy Kallick, and the Gibson Brothers.  We also included brand-new-to-us music from Shannon & Heather Slaughter, as well as Volume Five.

Jim will join you for tomorrow's Bluegrass Cafe...while we prepare for another snowstorm on Monday.
