"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 7/3/2011

As you might expect for a show airing on the day before Independence Day, we kicked off Sunday's BG Cafe with a few tunes of a patriotic nature.  We sprinkled in a few other tunes with American themes throughout the program, and even included a song which commemorates the last day of the Civil War Battle of Gettysburg, which happened on July 3, 1863.

We always like to play new music on the air at WHUS, and while we included several songs from recently-released CDs this week, much of this music was by performers who can easily be considered to be legends in the world of BG.  There are two fine box sets from the folks at Gusto Records, featuring the music of the Stanley Brothers and Reno & Smiley.  There are also reissues and compilations from Rebel Records which contain great music by the late John Duffey (with both the Country Gentlemen and Seldom Scene), as well as the McPeak Brothers and Larry Sparks.  Other new and/or newer music came from Donna Ulisse, as well as Volume Five.

A couple of acts with New England ties have new recordings, too.  Acoustic Blue is a western Massachusetts-based quartet who was recently featured in a Bluegrass Unlimited article.  Their new recording is called "Timeless," and it's sure to be considered another gem by their many fans.  The other act with a new CD is a duo now based in Idaho, Peg (Chase) & Ed (Vande Voorde).  These two met while Ed was a member of the mostly New Hampshire-based band of the 1990s, Stonewall Bluegrass (pictured here with Ed on the guitar, joining Tim Mowry on mandolin, Gary Filgate on banjo, and Pete Soukas on bass).  Peg is a great songwriter, too, so to go along with music from the Peg & Ed CD, we included a song from Stonewall Bluegrass's 1993 cassette, "I Won't Be Troubled Anymore," as well as a tune written by Peg Chase and recorded by the Bear Bridge Band in the early 1990s called, "Women Of Sorrow."  Great stuff!

July 4th is, of course, the birthday of the U.S.A., but it's also the birthday of a few BG folks of note:  Jimmy Gaudreau (born July 3, 1946), Peter Rowan (born July 4, 1942), and a man semi-jokingly referred to as the "Uncle of Bluegrass," Bill's older brother, Charlie Monroe (born July 4, 1903).  To honor these three, we included tunes from each of them.

And if all of this wasn't enough, we had a few day passes to the upcoming Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival for listeners.  Be sure to join Jim next week, as he'll also have a few Grey Fox tickets to give away -- consider that just one more reason to join him for next week's BG Cafe.

Hope everyone has had a Happy 4th!

Amy
