"Bluegrass Cafe" Playlist - 8/29/2010

Hi Folks.

There were many reasons we played certain songs on this show. To start off, Karl Shiflett and Big Country Show was in the area Saturday night at the Salem Barn, and again on this very evening at the TrueGrass Series at the Firebox, so we played a tune from a project by Karl's fiddler, Charlie Lawson, and one from Karl himself from his first Rebel project.

Next we celebrated Mr. Alton Orlomoski's birthday (that's Amy's and Tex's father) by playing three of his favorite songs by Elton Britt, Gene Autry, and The Carter Family. While all three have been done bluegrass style, we chose to play original or period versions as he might have heard them first.

Marti and I had been in our home state of North Carolina a week earlier, and got to spend most of an afternoon with my friend J.E. Mainer, Jr (photo left) -- son of string band pioneer J.E. Mainer. J.E. Junior was born in 1924, witnessed the entire musical career of his father, and was himself a member of J.E. Mainer's Mountaineers after WW2. Even at 86, he still plays and sings at his church. We played one of his dad's King recordings made in the 1940s to celebrate our visit.

We closed the gospel set with a song written by beloved Eastern Connecticut guitar picker, Fred Etheridge, recorded with help from Nick Anderson and Mark Doyle. Fred has experienced some serious health issues recently and is in the hospital, but his song, "What Would You Do," is gaining many fans in the area.

Amy will make the banjos and fiddles ring next Sunday 4-7pm ET, so be sure to tune in 91.7 FM in the area, or whus.org over the web.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 8/22/2010

Sunday in Storrs, CT was kind of a dreary day -- sort of rainy and not all that warm. We've had some absolutely spectacular weather this summer, though, so no one can complain too much. We tried to keep the music on the "sunny side," so I hope you were able to hear something you enjoyed...

Jimmy Martin, the self-appointed "King Of Bluegrass" and a very colorful character in the world of Bluegrass, would have celebrated his 83rd birthday on August 10th. Jimmy Martin's music continues to be recorded today -- for instance, Josh Williams has a version of "The Last Song" that is currently climbing up the National Bluegrass Survey -- so we paid tribute to Jimmy with about a half-dozen tunes by or about him. Clearly, many folks in the area are still great fans of Jimmy Martin and his music, as we heard stories from a couple of local musicians about times when Jimmy played show dates at Lake Compounce in Bristol, CT, or at a BG festival in Maine. Three musicians who are alumni of Jimmy's Sunny Mountain Boys -- J.D. Crowe, Doyle Lawson, & Paul Williams -- have recently released a recording of several Jimmy Martin gospel tunes called, "Old Friends Get Together." This is a GREAT recording, and we had a copy to give away to one lucky caller. Well, we could have easily given away a dozen copies to folks who called wanting that CD. Even five years after the death of Jimmy Martin, it's great to know that folks are still enjoying his music.
We tried to shine a bit of a spotlight on some fine Bluegrass musicians from New England. There are certainly plenty of them, so we shared some music, new and not-so-new, from the likes of White Mountain Bluegrass, Southern Rail, the Bear Bridge Band, Stonewall Bluegrass, Bear Minimum, the Old Time Bluegrass Singers, Acoustic Blue, Fred Pike, Sam Tidwell & the Kennebec Valley Boys, the Pike Family & the Pine Hill Ranchers, and Bob & Grace French.

And we still had time to squeeze in new music from projects by Steve Gulley & Tim Stafford, Marty Marrone & Tangled Roots, Sidetrack, and Maro Kawabata.

Jim (and maybe even Marti) will join you on the air this coming Sunday for lots of great music -- do join them, won't you?

Have a great week -
Amy

"Bluegrass Cafe" Playlist - 8/15/2010

Hi Folks.

Marti joined me in the WHUS studio Sunday the 15th for an enjoyable afternoon of music centered around the many area performances over the last month at venues such as the TrueGrass Series at the Firebox, The Podunk Bluegrass Music Festival in East Hartford, and the Shady Creek Reunion in Plainfield, CT.

This included songs from the hard driving Larry Gillis, Connecticut favorites Shady Creek, Gail & Gordon Pike from Maine, The Earl Brothers from San Francisco, bluegrass pioneer Sam Tidwell, local guitarist Fred Etheridge, and Podunk featured performers such as young guitar genius Josh Williams, Williams & Clark Expedition (now The Expedition Show with Monroe banjoist Blake Williams), David Davis from Cullman, Alabama, Ricky Skaggs, Jesse Baker, Michael Cleveland, resophonic master Roger Williams, and Rhonda Vincent.

The Heritage Corner provided songs from Scotty Stoneman, The Foot Hill Boys (including Cullen Galyean), Reno & Smiley, Ted Lundy & Bob Paisley, the Stanley Brothers, and Mac Wiseman.

New music came from Ashleigh Caudill, Darrell Webb, and Gary Waldrep.

We also played a track from a fun reissue of a 1976 album from Roland White.

Plenty of BG in southern New England this weekend...

The Bear Bridge Band at the 2009 Peru Car Cruize-In event

There are at least three noteworthy (no pun intended) BG events happening this coming weekend -- hope you can take part in one or two of 'em...

On Friday, August 13th it'll be a lucky day for fans of super-traditional, straight-ahead Bluegrass. Michael Cleveland & Flamekeeper, fresh from two rousing sets of music at last weekend's Podunk Bluegrass Festival, will return to play in New England at the Bull Run Restaurant on 215 Great Road in Shirley, MA. Showtime is 8PM. For more information, click here or call (877)536-7190.

Saturday, August 14th will bring two unique events, one in the Berkshires, and the other in Connecticut's "Quiet Corner:"

First up, tiny Peru, MA will host its 3rd annual Car Cruize-In Night. The event is held at the Partridgefield Park & Pavilion in the Peru Town Center (on Route 143 in western MA), and features all kinds of great food, games and activities for the kids, cool cars, and, of course, some fine music from local bands. Of interest to BGers, though, might be the once-or-so-a-year performance by the Bear Bridge Band. Yup, this is a band that includes my brother, Dave (as well my "other brother, Dave" Shaw and Robert & Lillian Fraker, who now work a bunch with their "regular band," the Old Time Bluegrass Singers). However, these folks still pick together whenever they can, and they still know how to crank out some powerful Bluegrass music. They'll start playing about 3PM and will stop around 5PM. Come see them when you can! Best of all, perhaps, admission is FREE, but whatever goodies you buy will benefit the Peru Volunteer Fire Department and the Peru Congregational Church. If you need more info, call (413)655-8265 or send an email to davjengab@comcast.net.

In eastern Connecticut, Nick Anderson will host a Shady Creek Reunion/Invitational Party. Best of all, though, if you want to be "invited," you only need to get in touch with Nick by calling (860)564-1018. In addition to hearing various versions of Shady Creek play during the day, you might also hear music from the likes of Connecticut's Charter Oak Bluegrass, Maine's Gail & Gordon Pike, and a bona fide, recognized Pioneer of Bluegrass, Sam Tidwell. The weather forecast for this weekend is delightful, so maybe you'll want to take a trip to Nick's home in Plainfield. Call him for directions.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 8/8/2010

Sunday marked the tail end of the tremendously successful Podunk Bluegrass Festival, but we kept the great music going on the airwaves at WHUS. Hope you were able to join us on your journey home...or, if you weren't at Podunk, we just hope you were able to join us!

The BG world lost another important member this past week on Monday. Mitch Jayne, the bass playing, pipe-smoking songwriter and primary yarn-spinner for the Dillards, died on August 2nd after a brief battle with cancer. The Dillards left the Missouri Ozarks early in 1963 and headed west to California to find their fame and fortune. Within a short time of arriving in Los Angeles, the group was signed to a recording contract by Elektra Records, and soon, they found roles on the super-successful "Andy Griffith Show" as members of the Darlin Family. Jayne stayed in California for about ten years, but then, returned to the Ozarks to write books and soak in Ozark culture. In 2009, the Dillards were inducted into the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame. On Sunday afternoon, we played a few tunes from the Dillards -- most of which were co-written by Mitch Jayne, and have become standards in the BG world, such as "The Old Home Place" and "Dooley." RIP, Mitch Jayne.
This Dillards photo (with Steve Cooley on the banjo) was taken at the 1991 Winterhawk Bluegrass Festival.

We also grouped together a few tunes that were originally recorded by the Carter Family, who'd made their first recordings on August 1, 1927. We could easily fill several shows with just Bluegrass versions of tunes from the Carter Family Songbook, but for Sunday, we limited ourselves to about a dozen songs. If you'd like to learn more about the Carter Family, there was a very fine biography published in 2002 and titled, Will You Miss Me When I'm Gone? : The Carter Family And Their Legacy In American Music by Mark Zwonitzer with Charles Hirschberg. If you can't borrow a copy from your local library, I'm sure there are copies available from one of the online used book sellers.

Be sure to join Jim as he returns to the BG Cafe this coming Sunday, August 15th. I'm sure it will be a great show so do tune in beginning at 4PM...

Have a great week, and thanks for listening!

Amy

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 8/1/2010

At this week's BG Cafe, we took some time to remember a friend, acknowledge the anniversary of some important country music recording sessions, and, of course, talk a good bit about the upcoming 15th annual Podunk Bluegrass Festival. (And, of course, we still managed to play a couple of fine new BG tunes, too).

Our Connecticut Bluegrass friend was musician and all-around good guy, Matt Nozzolio, who died suddenly on August 2, 2008 at the age of 53. Matt was someone who simply loved to play music -- whether it be on the accordion in a Mexican band or on the Dobro with CT bands like Amy Gallatin & Stillwaters, Charter Oak Bluegrass, or, with his last band, the old-time country music trio, the Bristol Boys. The photos here show Matt with the Bristol Boys visiting WHUS and the "Red Rooster Party" in October 2007, and on the stage at the Buttery Brook Bluegrass Festival in July 2008, just a few weeks before Matt's sudden passing. We played a couple of tunes from the one-and-only Bristol Boys' recording in honor of Matt, and we'll continue to remember him for years to come...

The Bristol Boys were named by Matt in honor of Bristol, Tennessee & Virginia -- the Birthplace of Country Music. It was in Bristol on August 1, 1927 that A.P. Carter along with his wife, Sara, and sister-in-law, Maybelle made their very first recordings. The influence felt by the music of the Carter Family goes far beyond just country music. As you can imagine, many a BG performer has recorded a Carter Family tune, and we only scraped the surface on Sunday by playing four of those tunes. Someday, we may devote a whole show to just the music of the Carter Family...in fact, we might just spend a bit more time with Carter tunes this coming Sunday.

And let's not forget that the 15th annual Podunk Bluegrass Festival begins this Thursday, August 5th at Martin Park in East Hartford, and culminates Sunday, August 8th with the annual band competition. Over the course of four days, there will many, many hours of great music from the likes of David Davis & the Warrior River Boys, the Josh Williams Band, James Reams & the Barnstormers, the Expedition Show, Michael Cleveland & Flamekeeper, Rhonda Vincent & the Rage, Next Best Thing, and on Saturday night, Ricky Skaggs & Kentucky Thunder. Jim and I both hope to see you there!

Also on the Podunk bill for 2010: the Gibson Brothers. Last week, I recorded an interview with Eric Gibson, and we played that piece on Sunday afternoon. The Gibsons are keeping a very busy schedule these days, and that's certainly not a bad thing. It's great to see the success of this band who first appeared on the New England BG festival circuit sometime in the mid-1990s. (On a personal note, I first heard of the Gibson Brothers around 1995, but didn't see them in person until the Thomas Point Beach BG Festival in 1996). They've come a LONG way since then, no doubt, and you'll have another chance to see them in CT this Saturday, August 7th at Podunk.

Finally, we got to talk to Podunk promoter and organizer, Roger Moss. Talk about being a busy man! Roger took a few moments from a crazy Podunk preparation week to tell us more about the festival, all of the great workshops and activities for the kids, and he even offered a free one-day pass to a lucky caller. Thanks to Roger and to all of the hardworking Podunk Festival Board.

We hope to see you this weekend at Podunk. While Jim will be busy with his Stage Captain duties, I'll be helping our old WHUS friend, Myrna Riquier, at the Podunk workshop area. Stop by to say hello -- we just may have some WHUS goodies for you...

As always, thanks for listening, and we'll be on the air with you again this coming Sunday...

Amy
