Hi Folks,
New music was again the order of the day as the flow of new releases continues in 2010. I had the pleasure of introducing several new projects to the WHUS airwaves along with many very recent releases and a handful of "Heritage Corner" legacy songs.
The new list included the world radio debut of the new project from The Old Time Bluegrass Singers (Herb Applin, Dick Bowden, Lillian Fraker, Robert Fraker, and Terry McGill) titled "Plastic Heart." This is the second release by this band that has historic roots going back many decades in New England, and it is very good.
Also new to WHUS was the new release from songwriter Mark Brinkman, "On The Brink of a Dream," that is chock full of great songs that Brink wrote and performs. A fine tribute album to John Hartford by The John Hartford String Band titled "Memories of John" was on the playlist, and a new CD from Jett's Creek titled "Guilty," a single from The Urban Monroes out of Oregon, and a track from Cadillac Sky (playing at the Iron Horse in Northampton, Massachusetts, this coming week) and their newest CD, "Letters In The Deep" all debuted on this show.
Rebel has released a compilation of coal mining songs called "Dark As A Dungeon - Songs of the Mines" that prompted a coal mining song set (always a favorite here).
I topped it off with a reprise of songs that The Spinney Brothers peformed live in the WHUS studio during a visit May 8, 2010.
There are many festivals coming up in this area soon, including Strawberry Park (Preston, CT), Blistered Fingers (Waterville, Maine), Jenny Brook (Tunbridge, VT), Podunk (East Hartford, CT), and several more that I'm sure I've left out. We will be featuring music from the bands performing at those venues in coming weeks along with our usual mix of new and legacy bluegrass.
Amy is on next week. Don't miss it.
Regards,
Jim Beaver
