"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 4/4/2010

Easter Sunday was an absolutely gorgeous day in eastern Connecticut: the sun was shining, the temperature was in the 70s, and to cap off a day of church activities and/or family events, we offered you 5 hours of Bluegrass on the ol' radio. UCONN student Joe Dempsey went home to MA for his Easter dinner, so the BG Cafe took the airwaves beginning at 2PM. Hope you enjoyed what you heard!

Last week, Jim said his unofficial "theme" was to feature some of the new music we've received over the past few weeks. As there is so much great new music now, I sort of piggy-backed on to that idea, and included lots of new music from the likes of Audie Blaylock & Redline, the Chapmans, Summertown Road, the Grascals, Lorraine Jordan & Carolina Road, Junior Sisk & Ramblers Choice, Mark Johnson & Emory Lester, Don Rigsby & Midnight Call, and Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver. There's also a new recording from Mac Wiseman from a 1971 festival, as well as newer music (released within the last couple of months) from Dewey Brown, the Patuxent Partners, Larry Stephenson, Brand New Strings, and Josh Williams. Doubtless, you'll be hearing plenty more from all of these projects in future weeks of the BG Cafe.

From time to time, especially during these shows which include the "bonus" hours from 2-4PM, I like to feature some of the classic country music performers and their various connections to the BG world. Since Merle Haggard celebrates a birthday on April 6th (born that date in 1937), it seemed only fitting to make him our feature performer. The man they call "The Hag" (would they call him by that nickname if he was a female?) has influenced many a great country AND BG singer down through the years, and there is absolutely no shortage of BG covers of some of Haggard's great tunes he's written. Why, in 2007 this Country Music Hall of Famer even branched out a bit and made a record he called "The Bluegrass Sessions." It was no stretch at all to play a set of Haggard covers, and then intersperse a few more Hag tunes throughout the rest of the show.

And, of course, it was Easter, and there were plenty of great Easter-themed BG songs to put on the airwaves. Hope you enjoyed something you heard along the way...

Thanks once again for supporting our fundraising efforts during Radiothon last month. We know that some of the premiums haven't yet been mailed out, so we hope you'll continue to be patient if you've not yet received one of our "thank-you gifts."

Finally, Sunday also marked the beginning of the baseball season for 2010. The Red Sox and Yankees opened up at Fenway last night in very un-April-like weather, but who was complaining? It came to my attention that I may have "inadvertently" offended some of the Yankee fans within our BG audience. If so...well, I guess I should apologize. I may not be crazy about the Bronx Bombers themselves, but they deserved their World Series win in 2009, I guess. No matter which side of the aisle you may sit on in this Sox/Yanks debate, we're always happy to welcome you into the BG Cafe. We hope you'll be sure to join us whenever you can.

Jim will be with you next Sunday on the air, and I'm sure you'll hear nothing but great BG music. Join him (and maybe even Marti, too)!

Have a great week!

Amy
