As we've been receiving lots and lots of new BG over the past couple of weeks, we tried to squeeze in a bunch of it on Sunday's show. We didn't do too badly, I don't think, as we heard new (or newER) music from former IBMA Female Vocalist of the Year, Laurie Lewis, a newer group called Brand New Strings, old-timey-sounding Jim Lloyd & the Skyliners, Clinch Mountain Boy fiddler Dewey Brown, Michael Martin Murphey's second "Bluegrass-ish" CD for Rural Rhythm, and California's Earl Brothers. There are always new titles to add to the mix, so we hope you like hearing 'em.
On Sunday, we also celebrated a couple of birthdays that are happening this coming week: Ralph Stanley, who was born on February 25, 1927, and Johnny Cash (admittedly NOT a Bluegrass performer, although he did sing on a record made by then son-in-law Marty Stuart several years ago), born on February 26, 1932. BTW, if you've not yet had a chance to read Dr. Ralph's recent biography called Man Of Constant Sorrow, you really ought to get to your local library and borrow a copy. It's a very interesting read, and gives a lot of detail about the early career of the Stanley Brothers.
At last weekend's Joe Val Bluegrass Festival, the fine New Hampshire BG band known as White Mountain Bluegrass was honored with one of the BBU Heritage Awards for their 40 years of playing BG around New England and really, all over the world. We shared some fine tunes from the McGees & Co. and will continue to do so.
Two shop notes: at WHUS, we're in the process of finally being reunited with our BG library (the CDs, anyway), and will be able to have full access to them within the next week or two. Hooray! Second, consider yourself "warned" that Radiothon 2010 is on its way. We've been in the process of gathering some fine CDs and things to offer as premiums, and hopefully, we'll be able to entice you to make a pledge to WHUS during our Radiothon weeks (March 14th & March 21st). I think you'll be pleased to see the goodies we're going to be offering, so please be sure to tune in.
And, of course, you'll want to tune in next Sunday when Jim returns to the airwaves at the BG Cafe. I'm sure he's got some great music in store for you...
Have a good week -
Amy
