"Bluegrass Cafe" Playlist - 5/10/2009 Mother's Day

Hi Folks.

This show fell on Mother's Day, so that was the theme. I figured there would be plenty of mother songs to choose from, but was actually surprised at just how many there are. Mothers are a popular bluegrass topic. Judging from your calls, it was popular with the Bluegrass Cafe audience as well.

Amongst the mother songs, several artists have new music that debuted on this show including Alecia Nugent; Patsy, Donna & Roni Stoneman; and Nathan Stanley & Ralph Stanley.

We also featured very recent releases from David Davis and the Warrior River Boys, The Gibson Brothers, Dale Ann Bradley, David Peterson, Special Consensus, and Melonie Cannon.

In my newly-named "Heritage Corner" I had two features. The first was Mack Woolbright and Charlie Parker and their 1927 recording of "The Man Who Wrote Home Sweet Home Never Was A Married Man." Earl Scruggs has cited the three-finger banjo picking of Mack Woolbright on "Home Sweet Home" as an early influence, so we followed that tune with Earl's latest recording of "Home Sweet Home" on Jerry Douglas's "Glide" album to show the influence over 80 years later.

The second Heritage Corner feature was two original cuts of a 1984 LP from local bluegrass legend Bill Hall and Northwind Bluegrass (see photo) that featured Skip Gorman and Rick Starkey in addition to songwriter and banjo picker Bill Hall.

I suppose a third feature was my own mother describing her childhood ride in a mule-drawn wagon to Midland, NC, where her family got to hear Charlie & Bill Monroe perform in the two-room schoolhouse. Her mother (my grandmother) loved "What Would You Give In Exchange," so we followed my mom with that song.
