"Bluegrass Cafe" Playlist - 4/12/2009 Easter

Bluegrass Cafe has traditionally used the last half-hour of our three-hour show to feature bluegrass gospel music, and because of the large amount of bluegrass gospel available we only touch on a small portion. Since this Sunday's show was on Easter, I decided to spend the majority of the show (not all) playing bluegrass gospel with a focus on older and rare recordings. Roughly a quarter of the show was new music, a little more if you count releases a year or two back. This is not a regular format for the show, so expect things to return to "normal" when Amy returns next week.

Speaking of rarities, I played both sides (one an original) of an undated Rebel 45-rpm single by a local New England group from several decades back, The Bluegrass Travelers, that featured local banjo legend Bill Hall and guitarist/vocalist Randy Hawkins. I also mined my old vinyl LPs to find some great music not-yet-on-CD by Phyllis Boyens (backed by the Johnson Mountain Boys), The Goins Brothers, Don Stover, Bill Monroe and Friends (the Oak Ridge Boys in this case), Mac Martin, Joe Val, and The Johnson Mountain Boys (why Rounder hasn't released the entire JMB catalog just mystifies me.)

New music included cuts from Kristen Scott Benson, Dailey & Vincent, Joe Mullins, David Peterson (who will be interviewed live next Sunday), Wayne Taylor, Gina Britt Tew, and Ernie Thacker.

Also, we heard cuts from two groups appearing in the area soon: Anne & Pete Sibley who will be appearing at the Salem Barn May 8, and John Reischman and the Jaybirds who will be appearing at East Hartford Community Cultural Center 16 April. Congratulations Anne & Pete for winning the duet competition the previous evening on Prairie Home Companion. Anne & Pete live out West now, but are Connecticut natives!

Thanks for listening! Amy will be with you for the next two weeks making the banjos and fiddles ring. Be sure to listen to Amy's interview with
David Peterson next week.

Jim
