"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 6/19/2011

There was lots of stuff going on during today's BG Cafe, and here's my usual complaint: the show wasn't long enough to play all of the music I wanted to play.

In addition to celebrating Father's Day with a few tunes about fathers, we included a few more songs performed by Bluegrass fathers with their own offspring (who also happen to be top-notch musicians). This seems to be a somewhat common occurrence, as there ar
e lots of Bluegrass fathers who have some very talented children, and many of them have even played in the same bands together. We didn't have time to play too many of those family combos today, but we did sneak in some tunes by families named Mullins, Cox, Paisley, Parmley, & McCoury. There are many others we just didn't have time to get on the air today, but maybe in future weeks...

Plus, today is the birthday of Lester Flatt -- a true BG icon, if t
here ever was one. Flatt wrote or co-wrote so many tunes which have gone on to become BG standards, and his unique vocal delivery has inspired many an imitator over the years. Even though Lester Flatt died 32 years ago, his influence continues to inspire so many modern-day Bluegrassers -- even if they don't fully realize they were inspired by him. Playing a dozen tunes written or co-written by Lester Flatt was incredibly easy...and could have easily expanded to 2 or 3 or 4 dozen.

New music was on today's agenda, too. My favorite new recording received over the last couple of weeks is Volume Five's "Children Of The Mountain" on Mountain Fever Records. This relatively new band (formed in 2008) has released a fabulous sophomore recording which deserves lots of listening, so don't be surprised if you hear plenty more from it in future weeks at the BG Cafe. We also played a fun new tune written by Steve Martin which will be featured when he plays with the Steep Canyon Rangers on the upcoming "Capitol 4th" program. The song is written from the viewpoint of Paul Revere's horse during that famous ride in April of 1775, and is called, "Me And Paul Revere." Enjoyable!

Be sure to join Jim in next Sunday's BG Cafe, and be sure to visit (and "like") us on Facebook.
