"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 12/10/2023

Our Bluegrass Cafe on this rainy, warmish December Sunday afternoon featured some Christmas music, as well as selections from a couple of newer CDs, and a lengthy tribute to a great banjo stylist who died this week, Terry Baucom.

The new music came to us from two new recordings on the Patuxent Music label:  "If It Wasn't For Longing" from Pennsylvania band Serene Green, as well as "Yesterday And Tomorrow" by the Country Gentlemen Tribute Band.  We heard three selections from each CD on Sunday, and will hear more in future weeks.  There was even a new Christmas song to share from the Po' Ramblin' Boys.

We also shared a whole lot of fine music from the super-talented banjo picker and performer, Terry Baucom.  Bauc died on December 7th at the age of 71.  Over the years, he was an original part of many influential bands in the world of Bluegrass, including Boone Creek, Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, and IIIrd Tyme Out.  He also released several solo recordings, and in his later years, Baucom fronted his own successful band, Terry Baucom's Dukes Of Drive.  We included music in our tribute set from all of these bands, plus Lou Reid, Terry Baucom & Carolina and Baucom, Bibey, & Blueridge.  He also received a Distinguished Achievement Award from the International Bluegrass Music Association this past September.  Rest in peace, Terry Baucom.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 12/3/2023

It's December!  That means it was time to feature some of the Christmas tunes on our Bluegrass Cafe this week!  We did just that, sharing seasonal classics from the Country Gentlemen and Stanley Brothers, as well as brand-new Christmas music from the Kody Norris Show, Joe Mullins & the Radio Ramblers, Darin & Brooke Aldridge, and Crandall Creek.  We'll continue to share Christmas music during each broadcast leading up to Christmas, so look forward to hearing it.

The month of December also inspired me to dig out some music from "D" performers -- those whose last names or band names begin with the letter "D."  Those from the "D" list included Dailey & Vincent, David Davis & the Warrior River Boys, Deeper Shade Of Blue, Detour, Diamond Creek, Bob Dick, Joe Diffie, the Dillards, Dry Branch Fire Squad, Matt Dudman, Stuart Duncan, and a few others.  

And if all of that wasn't enough, we also shared nine IBMA Songs of the Year from the very first one in 1991 ("Colleen Malone" by Hot Rize) to the most recent recipient (Molly Tuttle & Golden Highway with "Crooked Tree").  Great music, all of it.

For our Thanksgiving weekend edition of Bluegrass Cafe, we played several songs celebrating eating, turkeys, pilgrims, home, and gratitude.  In addition, we shared selections from two new Christmas releases from Billy Blue Records:  "Because It's Christmas Time" by Joe Mullins & the Radio Ramblers and Darin & Brooke Aldridge's "Hometown Holiday."  There was also new (or newish) music from the likes of Greg Blake, (Gary) Ferguson & (Colin) Henry, Full Cord, Carson Peters & Iron Mountain, Marty Falle, Sister Sadie, Balsam Range, and David Peterson.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 10/22/2023

Before we begin our new show at 4PM today, here's the playlist from last Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe.  We shared some newer music, a few classic favorites, and remembered a very special entertainer from New York who was a fixture on the New England and Northeast music scene for many, many years:  Walter "Smokey" Greene (August 10, 1930 - October 19, 2023).  Smokey was the rare singer who performed (generally) by himself with his guitar, and played and sung a steady repertoire of heart-tugging ballads followed by laugh-out-loud novelty tunes.  What an incredible performer!  He will be missed.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 10/15/2023

Sunday's show was a fun one and very full!  We paid tribute to the late Buck Trent (February 17, 1938 - October 9, 2023), shared a bunch of new music, and at the midway point in our program, we enjoyed a nice telephone visit with Jeremy & Corrina Rose Logston Stephens of High Fidelity.  

If you've listened to our Bluegrass Cafe in recent weeks, you know that High Fidelity has a brand-new gospel recording called "Music In My Soul."  This is their third release for Rebel Records, and it is a dandy.  We talked about the band, the CD, and shared that High Fidelity will be one of the featured bands at the 2024 edition of the Podunk Bluegrass Festival ~ August 8-11, 2024.  The full Podunk lineup has not yet been announced, but be sure to mark your calendars and check out High Fidelity (and the whole festival) on Friday, August 9, 2024.  And if you'd like to know more about the band and their traditional Bluegrass sound, please visit their website:  www.highfidelitybluegrass.com

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 10/8/2023

While driving to UConn on Sunday afternoon to present our Bluegrass Cafe, I had to figure out what music to play during the program.  I knew I had new songs to share from both Russell Moore & IIIrd Tyme Out and the Tennessee Bluegrass Band, but what else to play?  As we hadn't done it in a while, we pulled out the "Spotlight Letter of the Week" feature and shared songs from performers with a last name or band name that began with the letter "O" or the letter "P" (clearing the way to play lots of music from Bobby & Sonny -- the Osborne Brothers).

In addition to the new music from 3TO and the Tennessee Bluegrass Band, we also shared 2023 releases from the Henhouse Prowlers, Full Cord, Darren Beachley & Caleb Bailey, Rhonda Vincent, the Kody Norris Show, the Dan Tyminski Band, East Nash Grass, Nothin' Fancy, Greg Blake, Rebekah Speer, & Jeff Brown, and High Fidelity.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 10/1/2023

Before our next edition of Bluegrass Cafe airs tomorrow (4-7PM), it 's high time to get the playlist posted from our October 1st edition of this program!  We shared music from several of the big winners of IBMA Awards on September 28th, including Molly Tuttle & Golden Highway, Special Consensus, Greg Blake, Jason Carter, Authentic Unlimited, and Entertainer of the Year, Billy Strings).  We also included a couple of songs each from the three new members of the Bluegrass Hall of Fame:  Wilma Lee Cooper, Sam Bush, and David Grisman.  

We also took a few moments to remember the delightful Mark Wayne Kitchin ~ someone who was not only a noted country music DJ in eastern Connecticut for 30+ years, but also a Bluegrass bass player who made a record in the mid-1960s with some friends:  Fred Pike, Bill Rawlings & the Twin River Boys.  In addition, he also played a bit with Shady Creek in the 1990s. On a personal note, Mark was a radio mentor of mine for several years, and an all-around good guy who will be greatly missed.  Read his obituary here.  Rest in peace, Mark.
