"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 4/20/2025

Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe was our first live show in three weeks, and it was a busy one!  We included a bit of newer music, and celebrated the April 20th birthdays of both Doyle Lawson and Hylo Brown.  And, of course, since it was Easter Sunday, we couldn't forget to share many songs relating to this most holy season.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 3/23/2025

During this edition of our Bluegrass Cafe, we put the spotlight on an important member of the Bluegrass Hall of Fame:  Edward Windsor Adcock (June 21, 1938 - March 19, 2025).  This beloved icon of the banjo (and guitar) was an innovator whose banjo stylings will be remembered forever both for the work he did with his own bands and, of course, as part of the Classic Country Gentlemen (Eddie, John Duffey, Tom Gray, Charlie Waller).  We remembered him the best way we know how to honor someone -- by sharing a good portion of his/her music.  To this end, we heard music from Eddie joined by the Masters (Eddie, Kenny Baker, Josh Graves, Jesse McReynolds), songs recorded by Eddie with his wife of nearly 50 years, Martha Hearon Adcock, with the great Don Reno, on his own, and, of course, with the Country Gentlemen.  Eddie Adcock will never be forgotten.  Read more about his remarkable life in this full-length obituary published by Bluegrass Today.

In between selections from Eddie Adcock, we also shared some newer Bluegrass selections from folks like Seth Mulder & Midnight Run, Williamson Branch, Jim Hurst, Red Camel Collective, and the Seldom Scene.  We also remembered Bluegrass Hall of Famer David Grisman on his 80th birthday (born March 23, 1945).

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 3/16/2025

This day's edition of our Bluegrass Cafe was all about March winds, St. Patrick's Day, new music, and the celebration of a couple of March 16th birthdays (those of both Tim O'Brien and Ronnie McCoury).  Hope you were able to join us!

There was new music to be shared today, with selections from two recordings released on March 14th ("Remains To Be Scene" by the Seldom Scene and Jason Carter & Michael Cleveland's "Carter & Cleveland") and one to be released in April ("Carry Me Back To The Bluegrass" from Big Country Bluegrass).  Though we have played music on the air from all of these recordings over the past few weeks, today was the first time we shared music from the full recordings.  You can probably guess it won't be the last time we hear from these selections, either.

And since St. Patrick's Day happens tomorrow, we couldn't forget to play a couple of Irish-themed songs.  Hope you enjoyed them.  

We'll look forward to visiting with you next Sunday afternoon from 4-7PM.  And don't forget that we'll have tickets to give away to the upcoming Noam Pikelny show at UConn's Jorgensen Center for the Performing Arts during next week's broadcast.  It should be a fun time!

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 3/9/2025

Our Bluegrass Cafe broadcast was shortened by about 40 minutes today, as there was a broadcast of the UConn Women's Basketball Big East Tournament game that didn't end until about 4:40PM.  Still, we managed to pack a whole lot of fine music into our remaining 140 minutes.  

We celebrated several March birthday performers, including two Bluegrass Hall of Fame members (Norman Blake and Marshall Wilborn), one Country Music Hall of Famer (Jimmy Fortune), and several other fine folks, including Kristin Scott Benson, Cia Cherryholmes, Raymond Fairchild, Bob Paisley, and Rickie Simpkins.

We also remembered bass playing entertainer, Ernie Sykes, as he died on March 5th at the age of 64.  Most recently, Ernie had been a member of the Tennessee Mafia Jug Band, but he was a journeyman musician working with bands as varied as Bill Monroe & His Blue Grass Boys, Eddie & Martha Adcock, Livewire, and Jimmy Gaudreau's Bluegrass Unit.  In addition to being a fine musician, Ernie was an excellent singer, so we showcased him singing a couple of songs.  

There were three new songs this week from forthcoming recordings by Chris Davis, Rick Faris, and Matt Wallace.

Next Sunday, the Student Union building will be locked during our broadcast, as it will be the beginning of Spring Break at UConn.  That means there's a possibility we may not be able to host a live broadcast.  We will let you know as soon as we know, so be on the lookout for a post on our Facebook page (www.facebook.com/WHUS.BluegrassCafe).

Before the day changes to Sunday, again, it's time to share a recap from last Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe!  

One of our "features" for last week's radio show was that we answered several song requests -- requests that weren't phoned in or solicited during the program, but instead, were sought by a listener/announcer at a Grange Bluegrass show held the night before our February 23rd broadcast.  We did pretty well with all but one of the requests, and we'll answer that one tomorrow.  Tune in to hear it!

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 2/2/2025

Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe was our first for February 2025.  We had a few items on our agenda for the day, and we managed to include all of them.  First and foremost, we belatedly celebrated the birthdays of four prominent Bluegrassers born on February 1st:  Del McCoury (1939), Tom Gray (1941), David Parmley (1959), and Jason Carter (1973).  No better way to celebrate these gents than by sharing their music...and so, we did.

We pulled out our sometimes-feature wherein we occasionally put one letter of the alphabet in the spotlight.  Our featured letter for Sunday was "F" -- in honor of the month of February, of course.  To that end, we shared music from more than twenty acts whose band name or surname began with the letter "F."  Among the "F" performers:  Raymond Fairchild, Rick Faris, Fast Track, Gary Ferguson, the Feinberg Brothers, Flashback, Lester Flatt, Flatt Lonesome, Bela Fleck, Aaron "Frosty" Foster, Front Range, Full Cord, and several others.

And since Sunday was Grammy Awards Day, we also included music from 5 of the 6 nominated recordings in the category of Bluegrass Album of the Year.  Congratulations to all of the nominees (Bronwyn Keith-Hynes, the Del McCoury Band, Sister Sadie, Tony Trischka, and Dan Tyminski), as well as to the winner, Billy Strings.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 1/26/2025

During part of Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe, we spent some time belatedly celebrating the January 19th birthdays of two very important figures in the world of Bluegrass:  both the late Bluegrass Hall of Famer Charlie Waller (January 19, 1935 - August 18, 2004), and the always-important Bluegrass influencer, Dolly Parton (born January 19, 1946).  No better way than to celebrate these folks than with lots of their music, and so, that is what we did.

We also remembered Buck White, who died on January 13th at the age of 94.  This patriarch of the Whites (a band formerly known as Buck White & the Down Home Folks) was a staple at the Grand Ole Opry for 40+ years, and carried on the tradition of great family bands in country music for many decades.  Buck will be missed, but his influence lives on through his daughters (and musical partners), Sharon White Skaggs and Cheryl White Jones.

The Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass Music of America (SPBGMA) held their 50th annual convention and awards show this past weekend, and we shared music from some of the big fan-voted winners, including the Kody Norris Show, Rhonda Vincent, Junior Sisk, and Authentic Unlimited.  For a complete list of the 2025 winners, check out this link from Bluegrass Today.

We even had time for a bit of brand-new music during our show, too, this time coming from Laura Orshaw (with the Slocan Ramblers), Larry Cordle, Becky Buller, and Nick Chandler & Delivered.
