"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 9/29/2024

Two 2024 Bluegrass Hall of Famers --
Katy Daley & Alan Munde --
with one of their many fans.
As you might expect, Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe featured a whole lot of music from several newly-minted IBMA Award winners for 2024.  I had the pleasure of travelling to Raleigh, North Carolina for four days last week and was able to take in a good portion of the World of Bluegrass festivities.  Fun times.  This was the very last WoB event that will be held in Raleigh, and I was delighted to be there.  While there, I attended some useful workshops, heard lots of great music from lots of fine bands, visited a bit with our old WHUS pal, Jim Beaver, and witnessed my broadcasting friend, Katy Daley, being inducted into the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame.  It was an outstanding week.

If you missed the IBMA Awards Show from last Thursday evening, the YouTube link of the show can be found here.  Check it out.

In addition to sharing some music from CDs we brought back from Raleigh, we also belatedly celebrated the birth anniversary of the great Marty Robbins (September 26, 1925 - December 8, 1982).  Though this Country Music Hall of Fame member performed lots of styles of music, Bluegrass wasn't really one of them.  Still, many of his songs have been covered by Bluegrass performers, so we shared a whole bunch of them from performers including the Gibson Brothers, the Spinney Brothers, Chris Jones & the Night Drivers, Jim Hurst, the Johnson Mountain Boys, and Special Consensus.

Hope you'll consider joining me once again this coming Sunday for another fun three-hour edition of our Bluegrass Cafe.  We'll see you at 4PM.

Enjoy the week!

Amy O.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 9/22/2024

Happy Fall!  Our first Bluegrass Cafe of the season started with several songs sort of related to Fall.  The bulk of the show was devoted to paying tribute to two Country Music Hall of Fame members born in mid-September, and we also took some time to remember a favorite traditional mandolin master who has left us too soon.

David Davis (2/16/1961 - 9/15/2024)
David Davis was a first-class entertainer and bandleader of the Warrior River Boys since 1984, and he will be greatly missed.  Though the Warrior River Boys were based in Alabama, for many years, it seemed like they were a local band, as WRB played all sorts of festivals and shows throughout New England constantly, it seemed.  It was during that time that the band made many fans and friends throughout New England.  David Davis was a throwback type of entertainer, and he will be greatly missed.  To honor him, we shared lots of music from recordings made by David Davis & the Warrior River Boys between 1990 and 2018.  If you would like to read more about the remarkable life of David Davis, please read this wonderful eulogy published recently in Bluegrass Today.  Rest in peace, David Davis.  Thanks for the music.

Both Roy Acuff (September 15, 1903 - November 23, 1992) and Hank Williams (September 17, 1923 - January 1, 1953) may be members of the Country Music Hall of Fame, but we'll always remember them during our Bluegrass Cafe as their music has been often covered by all sorts of Bluegrass performers.

This coming week, the International Bluegrass Music Association's World of Bluegrass event happens in Raleigh, North Carolina.  I'll be heading down there on Tuesday, so will have a full report for you about all of the happenings during next Sunday's show.  Hope you can join me then.

Have a great week!

Amy O.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 9/1/2024

Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe started with songs about working -- the exact thing that most folks don't do on Labor Day.

We belatedly celebrated the birth anniversary of the original Queen of Country Music,
Kitty Wells (August 30, 1919 - July 16, 2012).  Like that of a lot of country music stars of her generation, the music of this icon has often been covered in the world of Bluegrass music.  To that end, we shared songs not only from Kitty Wells, but also from Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, the Hot Flashes, IIIrd Tyme Out, Dale Ann Bradley with Danny Paisley, White Mountain Bluegrass, and Don Reno & Charlie Moore.

And there was a bit of new music to share, too.  To that end, we included newer music from the Dan Tyminski album, "Live From The Ryman," as well as selections from Sister Sadie (from the "Bluegrass Sings Paxton" collection), the Grass Daddies, Wyatt Ellis, Unspoken Tradition, Rhonda Vincent, and Chris Jones & the Night Drivers.

As I mentioned during our broadcast this past Sunday, I will not be at WHUS to present a live program this coming weekend (Sunday, September 8th).  If all goes as planned, there will be a rebroadcast of a COVID-era Bluegrass Cafe on Sunday.  There may be some confusion as to why I'm referencing COVID, but now, you'll know the secret!  I plan to return to the air on Sunday, September 15th with a live Bluegrass Cafe.  Please be sure to join me.

Have a great week!

Amy O.
