"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 5/21/2023

Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe was our last live-in-the-studio show for the month of May, as the University of Connecticut is closing the studio next weekend in order to give the UConn workers a holiday.  Our next live broadcast will be on Sunday, June 4th.

In the meantime, during Sunday's show, we began by belatedly celebrating the birth anniversary of the Singing Ranger -- one Clarence Eugene (a/k/a Hank) Snow.  We shared six songs from the Hank Snow song catalog, five of which were Bluegrass covers.  

As we won't be on the air next Sunday (unless WHUS runs an archival broadcast of the show), we included a few songs which were appropriate for the real meaning of Memorial Day.

There was a tiny bit of newer music to share this week, as well.  To that end, we shared new or recent music from Boone & Foster, Lorraine Jordan & Carolina Road, the Kody Norris Show, Troy Engle, Patrick McAvinue, Lost & Found, Cory Walker, Jerry Salley, the Lonesome River Band, Jason Barie, Mike Mitchell, the Gibson Brothers, and Joe Mullins & the Radio Ramblers.

And finally, we played several songs from a recording I found recently at a used book sale.  This CD:  "E Pluribus Bluegrass" was recorded by the Bluegrass Patriots in 1996, and listening to it reminded me of how much I enjoyed this band.  Though the Patriots were a Colorado band, they did play a lot of major (and smaller) Bluegrass shows and festivals in the eastern U.S. around the time this CD was released.  The Bluegrass Patriots released several other CDs over the course of their 30+ year life as a band, but to me, this one will always be their best.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 5/14/2023

Happy Mother's Day!  It was a gorgeous Spring day in eastern Connecticut on this second Sunday of May -- a perfect day for Mom!  During our Bluegrass Cafe, we honored mother with all sorts of songs about her -- nearly three full hours' worth.  Hope you were able to join us.

We also remembered the late Gloria Belle (June 9, 1939 - May 5, 2023), who happened to be one of the pioneering female band leaders and singers in Bluegrass history.  If you'd like to know more about the life of this remarkable woman (as well as hear/see a lot of excellent sound clips of her music), visit the Bluegrass Today obituary that was recently published.  

We still found a tiny bit of time to enjoy some brand new (older) music from a wonderful Bluegrass band that would celebrate 50 years as a band in 2023:  Virginia's Lost & Found.  They have a new-yet-old record soon-to-be released later this month on Mountain Fever Records, so we shared a trio of tunes from that record.  We also shared newer music from Dan Tyminski, Songs From The Road Band, Stephen Wade, Special Consensus, and Larry Sparks.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 5/7/2023

Before Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe, we were actually wondering if it was going to be possible to have a live radio program today.  You see, this is Commencement Weekend at the University of Connecticut and there were THREE separate graduation ceremonies that took place just today -- two of them during our show's airtime.  That means that parking on campus is kind of haywire and also, there was a possibility that the building in which the WHUS studios are located would be locked.  Turmoil!  Still, we found out last-minute that all was fine for our access, so we were able to provide three big hours of Bluegrass music today.  Phew!  :)  Congratulations to all 2023 graduates!

We devoted 17 songs -- a full hour's worth of airtime -- to Bluegrass covers of songs written by the legendary Canadian songwriter/performer who died at the age of 84 on May 1st:  Gordon Lightfoot.  It's no secret that the late Tony Rice was a major fan of Mr. Lightfoot, as over his own recording career, Mr. Rice recorded nearly a dozen and half songs from the pen of Gordon Lightfoot.  There have been loads of other Lightfoot Bluegrass covers over the years, though, and the ones we shared were from performers as varied as Mac Wiseman, Paul Adkins & the Borderline Band, the Front Porch String Band, Sideline, the Gibson Brothers, the Country Gentlemen, Bubba Chandler, Robert Hale, Bill Emerson & Cliff Waldron, Special Consensus, Chris Jones & the Night Drivers, J.D. Crowe & the New South, and, of course, the aforementioned Tony Rice.  Rest in peace, Gordon Lightfoot, and thank you for sharing your music with millions.

My apologies for those who may have tuned in last week to discover there was no Bluegrass music airing during our regular timeslot.  I was at the Rhode Island Bluegrass Alliance Hall of Fame event (read more about that here), and while I had submitted an older show to be aired in the regular 4-7PM time frame, for whatever reason, it just didn't happen.
