"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 12/26/2021

For our last Bluegrass Cafe of 2021, we shared songs of the season, as well as a few Bluegrass favorites of the year, and a few songs in honor of some late December birthday celebrants.  Hope you had a great Christmas.

Our program for this week was recorded at home on December 21st, several days before we learned of the Christmas Eve passing of the legendary banjo player and band leader, J.D. Crowe.  Our program for the first Sunday of 2022 will include a tribute to this Bluegrass Hall of Famer, as well as a remembrance of several of the other Bluegrass performers and legends that were lost during 2021.  At this point, we are unsure if that show will be a home-made one or a live edition, but either way, sure hope you will consider joining us.

"Classic Country Christmas" encore - 12/18/2021

It's that time again...Christmas!!  What a year we've had, eh?  Hope you all are doing well and getting ready to celebrate the big day in whatever way you like.

As the UConn campus is closed on Sundays for the next few weeks, and our building access is not quite settled for those closed times, we will be returning to "home recording" for the time being.  Time will tell how long this will last.  In the meantime, our December 18th broadcast was devoted to a re-airing of three "Classic Country Christmas" hours I produced at home in December 2020.  Hope you enjoyed them!  

This coming Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe will be recorded either this evening or Wednesday evening, but it should be fresh for your listening on Boxing Day -- Sunday, December 26th -- from 4-7PM.

P.S.  What follows is the post I made in December 2020 when these "Classic Country Christmas" hours first were presented.  Read on...

Every year, I love to play some of my favorite country Christmas music during our Bluegrass Cafe "Christmas Extravaganza."  This year, though, I didn't have to limit myself to playing just a couple of country Christmas songs mixed in at the Bluegrass Cafe, as some gaps in our WHUS broadcast schedule (plus, home recording) allowed me to record three separate one-hour programs featuring (mostly) nothing but classic country Christmas music.  WHUS has aired these shows a few times over the past few days, so hope the songs added a bit of joy to some Christmas celebrations.  

As for the songs I chose to play this year, there were selections from lots of favorite Christmas recordings of my childhood, as well as a few "newer" tunes (newest from 1993), and even more songs recorded many years before I was born.  It was a fun mix.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 12/5/2021

This past Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe began with music written by, performed by, and written about one of the most cherished voices in the history of Bluegrass music, the late Carter Stanley (August 27, 1925 - December 1, 1966).  While the elder guitar-playing Stanley brother has been gone for a greater number of years than he was alive, his music and his legacy continue to grow.  

Our show also included a few cover songs in tribute to the late Stonewall Jackson (the honky tonk singer and long-time Grand Ole Opry member, as opposed to the Civil War General) who passed on December 4th at the age of 89.

There were a couple of newer songs to share, too, including brand-new Christmas music from the pen of Rick Lang, as well as a new seasonal song from Tammy Rogers & Thomm Jutz.  In addition, there was newer non-Christmas music from Valerie Smith, Volume Five, Seth Mulder & Midnight Run, and James Reams.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 11/28/2021

 I'm a few days late in posting the playlist from Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe, but we'll still with the adage of better late than never...

During Sunday's show, we opened the request lines, and the requests poured in.  We played as many as we could, and those songs are noted in the playlist in red.

On the first Sunday after Thanksgiving, we added some Bluegrass Christmas music to our weekly mix.  As the season progresses, we will add more Christmas music each week -- some of it newly-released in 2021.

And we had a couple of Bluegrass folks to remember during this program, as well, as the Bluegrass community has recently lost two valued musicians.  Bill Holden, a one-time member of both the Country Gentlemen and Bill Monroe's Blue Grass Boys, died on November 15th at the age of 71; and on November 21st, Jason Moore, a founding member of the group Sideline, among others, died suddenly at the age of just 47.  To remember these gentlemen, we shared music from their recordings.  May they rest in peace.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 11/21/2021

We were back to recording at home for Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe, as the building that houses our WHUS air studios is not accessible while UConn is pretty much shut down for Thanksgiving week.  No matter, though, as we still shared a lot of great music.  Hope you were able to join us!

As it is Thanksgiving week, our first hour of the show focused mainly on the theme of "home" with lots of music about that very subject.  Throughout the show, we interspersed more songs about being "thankful" and couldn't resist throwing in a couple of tunes about "turkey."  

There was a touch of new music to share this week, including selections from two forthcoming recordings in 2022 by both Fast Track and Audie Blaylock & Redline.  We also shared music from a few 2021 recordings from folks like the Alex Leach Band, Matt Dudman, Amanda Cook, Rhonda Vincent, Danny Paisley & the Southern Grass, Balsam Range, the Larry Stephenson Band, Lorraine Jordan & Carolina Road, Williamson Branch, the Grascals, Rick Faris, Greg Blake, and Still Pickin'.

Hope your Thanksgiving is a very happy one, no matter how you choose to celebrate.  I'm thankful to have you along as a listener of the show.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 11/14/2021

Today's Bluegrass Cafe was one with no particular plan.  Still, we ended up sharing songs from mid-November birthday celebrants (including that of one very fine Kentucky songwriter and singer), as well as sharing a little bit of newer music from a fun local band and an award-winning country songwriter.  There were a few classic favorites thrown in, too.  Hope you heard something you enjoyed!

For the mid-November birthdays, we played several songs from the prolific pen of Larry Cordle.  In addition, there was music from other birthday celebrants, including Peter McLaughlin, Edgar Loudermilk, Tom Adams, and Josh Williams.  

New music came to us from local trio, Still Pickin' ("On With The Show!) and a noted country music songwriter who has produced a bona fide Bluegrass record, Don Schlitz ("Mountaintop" from the Engelhardt Music Group).  We also included a couple of songs from the newest Rhonda Vincent record, "Music Is What I See."

Thanksgiving Break is coming to the University of Connecticut during the week beginning November 21st, so that means our next Bluegrass Cafe will be one of the "homemade" variety.  The plan is to put together and submit a new show for your listening pleasure (I hope) that will air during our normal 4-7PM timeframe on Sunday, November 21st.  We'll keep you posted via our Facebook page, so be sure to give our page a like:  www.facebook.com/WHUS.BluegrassCafe.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 11/7/2021

Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe aired on a "Fall Back" day, so we shared some songs about time to get the show started.  We also included a whole bunch of music in honor of Country Music Hall of Famer, Whisperin' Bill Anderson, whose 84th birthday was celebrated on November 1st.  If that wasn't enough, we included a bit of music from two of the newest members of the Rhode Island Bluegrass Alliance (RIBA) Hall of Fame.  It was a show filled with fine music!  Hope you were able to tune in for a bit.

On Saturday evening (November 6th), RIBA hosted a wonderful Hall of Fame ceremony honoring the music endeavors of four important performers in the history of Bluegrass music in Rhode Island and southern New England.  As they weren't able to hold their induction ceremony in 2020 due to COVID, this event featured both the 2020 inductees (the late brothers, Fred & Earl Pike, as well as Rhode Island banjo picker Richard Guilbault) and the 2021 honorees (Connecticut's Nick Anderson and Rhode Island pioneer Roger Williams).  While I wasn't able to find music to share from Rich Guilbault or Roger Williams, I am certainly willing to play some on the air if anyone has any to share.  We did, however, include a bit of music from Nick Anderson (both with Shady Creek, as well as with the Gospel Friends) and the Pike Brothers & the Pine Hill Ranchers.  It's so important to honor these Bluegrass pioneers.  Thank you to RIBA for doing this!

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 10/31/2021

One week after the passing of the great Roland "Sonny" Osborne (October 24, 1937 - October 24, 2021), during this day's Bluegrass Cafe, we remembered his life and legacy with a whole lot of his music:  songs he recorded during his long, award-winning career with his brother, Bobby; his sister, Louise; with Red Allen; and while he was a teenage member of Bill Monroe & His Blue Grass Boys.  There will never be another Sonny Osborne, that's for certain.  In recent years, if you've not been reading his "Ask Sonny Anything" column in Bluegrass Today, you owe it to yourself to go back and read through the archives.  To do that, follow this link ~ and enjoy!  

Today also happens to be Halloween, so on what other day would it be better to play spooky stories-in-song?  To that end, we played more than a dozen songs featuring tales of ghostly girls, ghostly men, even ghostly trains.  We even through in some spooky, unexplained lights, and some creepy footsteps.  Hope you've had a happy Halloween with more emphasis on the treats than the tricks!
