Two words to describe Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe: celebrate and remember. We did a little bit of both for several different performers, as well as shared a smattering of newer Bluegrass music. Hope you enjoyed the program.
Our main focus for the week was, of course, a big portion of music from the late Steve Gulley, who died on August 18th after a short battle with pancreatic cancer. Steve Gulley didn't waste time in his 57 years on this earth, as he created loads of wonderful music which will be enjoyed and celebrated for years to come. We shared a good selection of those songs from Steve's time spent with Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, as a founding member of both Mountain Heart and Grasstowne, fronting his own band of Steve Gulley & New Pinnacle, with his sometimes songwriting and duet partners, Tim Stafford and Dale Ann Bradley, as well as a track from a soon-to-be-released record by Phil Leadbetter & the All-Stars of Bluegrass which features Steve Gulley and his wife, Debbie. A couple of these tracks were recorded live at benefits for WDVX, a non-profit radio station in east Tennessee where Steve Gulley was a on-air DJ for the last couple of years. Many thanks to broadcaster Lee Michael Demsey of BluegrassCountry.org for sharing some of these songs with me for broadcasting. Steve Gulley will certainly be missed, but his music lives on...
We also remembered a Bluegrass legend (and Hall of Famer) who was born on August 27, 1925 -- Carter Stanley. Twelve years after Carter, another Bluegrass Hall of Famer was also born on August 27th -- banjo picker extraordinaire J.D. Crowe. In addition to songs from Carter and Crowe, we heard a couple from Shawn Camp of the Earls Of Leicester, as his birthday was celebrated on August 29th. And, a bit closer to home for me were a couple of songs thrown into the mix in honor of my own father, Alton Orlomoski, who celebrated his 91st birthday on August 29th.
There were a couple of newer selections to share, too, with music from the Kody Norris Show, Stephen Mougin, Carolina Blue, High Fidelity, the Feinberg Brothers, FastTrack, and Lorraine Jordan & Carolina Road.
As always, many thanks for listening to our program, and be sure to give our Facebook page a "like," if you're so inclined: www.facebook.com/WHUS.BluegrassCafe.
Have a terrific week, and stay healthy!
