"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 7/29/2007

We always enjoy giving things away to our listeners, and Sunday's show included a whole lot of that. We talked on the phone to two promoters of upcoming BG festivals in New England, and were able to give away passes to each festival. First up was Roger Moss of the Podunk Bluegrass Festival in East Hartford (August 2-5), and then came Rich Kendall of the Lake Champlain Bluegrass Festival in Alburg, Vermont (August 10-12). Both festivals feature top-notch entertainment, and should be a whole lot of fun. Thanks to both Roger & Rich for coming on the air with us, and for sharing some passes with our listeners.

In addition, we were able to give away a couple of full-carload passes for the upcoming Tolland County 4H Fair in Vernon, CT (August 10-12). Bluegrass from Winsted's Northernbound will be featured at the fair on Friday, August 10th. Thanks to our listeners, the Trickett Family, for providing us with these passes.

If all of these giveaways weren't enough, we were also able to squeeze in a teeny bit of new music from two outstanding students of the Ralph Stanley School of Bluegrass: Charlie Sizemore ("Good News" comes out on Rounder in August), and James Alan Shelton ("Walking Down The Line" is James's outstanding new solo CD).

Sunday's show marked our last broadcast from our "temporary" broadcast home (4+ years) on UCONN's Horsebarn Hill. Beginning this Wednesday, August 1st, we'll be moving into our brand new studios at UCONN's Student Union. Marti will be with you for the "inaugural" edition of BG Cafe from that new broadcast home next Sunday, August 5th.

Guests & goodies for listeners this Sunday, 7/29!

Of course, we'd like to believe that you listen to the Bluegrass Cafe every Sunday from 4-7PM 'cause you think Jim, Marti, and I are charming, knowledgeable, and, of course, that we play some mighty fine Bluegrass music. That's probably not true, but we'd like to believe it, anyway. In addition to those reasons for listening, we're going to add TWO more reasons this Sunday.

If you're yearning to get to some terrific New England Bluegrass festivals before the season ends, there are a couple of events coming up very quickly. Sunday's show will include a chance for you to call in and win 4-day passes to either the Podunk Bluegrass Festival in East Hartford, CT (August 2-5) and the Lake Champlain Bluegrass Festival in Alburg, VT (August 10-12). We're expecting to have some guests come on the air and talk about these events, as well. Please join us!

"Bluegrass Cafe" Playlist 7/22/07

Marti and I had a lot of fun on this show. The time flew by so fast that we left about 20 songs unplayed that we really wanted to bring to you. That will give Amy a chance to keep it going next week!

Lots of new music this week along with our usual mix of classic bluegrass. Hope you heard something you liked.

Jim

"Bluegrass at Buttery Brook Park" - Saturday, July 21st

For those who are NOT heading to the big Greyfox BG Festival this weekend, but who still would like to get their Bluegrass "fix," why not consider a more "traditional" alternative? Dave Helman (the long-time promoter of the "Country Corner Coffee House" October-April shows & a radio host at WTCC, 90.7FM) has put together his third (at this location) Bluegrass at Buttery Brook Park. This is a one-day festival, and will be held this Saturday, July 21st at the Buttery Brook Park, Route 33, South Hadley, MA. The park is very easy to find, and the setting is perfect for Bluegrass. Let's hope the weather cooperates a bit more this year, though. Last year's festival featured a terrific lineup, but the weather forecast of 9+ inches of rain just didn't make for a huge crowd. It will be different this year, though, and the lineup is again quite excellent:

The music starts at 10AM and ends about 8PM, and the sound is provided by Mr. Helman in the form of Country Corner Productions. Please get out there and support this event -- rain or shine. For more information or directions, click here or call Dave at (413)467-9394.

I'll be there....hope you will, too!

Playlist for "Bluegrass Cafe" - 7/15/07

Hi folks.

Marti and I have been in North Carolina for most of the past two weeks, so it was good to be back in the studio after such a prolonged absence. Many thanks go to Amy for holding both the Red Rooster Party and Bluegrass Cafe together while we were gone. We will be bringing you music and interviews from our visit in the coming weeks.

We informally featured the music of Tom T. and Dixie Hall on this program along with a good bit of new music to go with our classic bluegrass selections. Hope you enjoyed!

BG & Old Time Country Music in Willimantic, CT -- Saturday, July 14th

This Saturday, July 14th, the Bristol Boys (so named for the "Birthplace of Country Music," Bristol, Tennessee & Virginia) will be performing at the Connecticut Eastern Railroad Museum, 55 Bridge Street, Willimantic, CT. Showtime is 4:30PM. This show is part of the museum's summer concert series known as Rhythm on the Rails. There is an alternate rain location: Fred's Brick House Cafe, Gateway Commons, Willimantic. For more information on this show or the series, call (860)228-3197.

While the members of the Bristol Boys are all veterans of various New England Bluegrass bands (including Traver Hollow, Charter Oak Bluegrass, Amy Gallatin & Stillwaters, the Bear Bridge Band, and others) , the band mainly performs old country music from the 1920s through the early 1950s. Check them out, if you're so inclined. Admission to the show is free, but a $5 donation is strongly encouraged. All proceeds benefit the museum, and really, is there anyone who DOESN'T like railroads?

And keep this in mind: if you find yourself enjoying the Bristol Boys, they'll also be appearing in Plainfield, CT on Sunday, November 18th in a show featuring David Peterson & 1946, as well as Nick Anderson & Tall Grass. That show is sponsored by the Canterbury Historical Society, and more information can be found by clicking here.

Amy

Small confession: my brother, Dave, is a member of this trio. I think you should go to the show, anyway.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 7/8/2007

Sunday's show was filled with lots of (I think) great tunes -- hope you agree. In addition to something new from the forthcoming Tom T. Hall Sings Miss Dixie & Tom T., we heard three tunes from a old Rebel LP from the early 1970s featuring a family band from Oneco, Connecticut (in the "Quiet Corner" of CT near the RI border), the Pike Brothers & the Pine Hill Ranchers. Although their music wasn't always 100% Bluegrass, there's no doubt that Fred Pike is a legendary character in the New England Bluegrass world, and it's always fun to listen to his recordings.

Jim & Marti will join you next Sunday, July 15th. I'll see you again sometime before the month is through....

Ralph Stanley in East Hartford 7/6/2007

All Southern New Englanders should take note of a rare appearance by Dr. Ralph Stanley and the Clinch Mountain Boys at the East Hartford Community Cultural Center this Friday evening, 6 July 2007. The doors open at 6 pm for jamming and the good doctor begins his performance at 7:30 pm.

Ralph had his 80th birthday earlier this year and is without peer in accomplishment in the mountain style of what they call bluegrass music. He is one of the few remaining of the first generation pioneers of bluegrass music. Ralph could choose to retire at any moment and enjoy the fruits of his lifelong achievements, but he is still on the road today, and this could be your last chance to enjoy this legendary performer and pioneer.

It is quite possible you will see the Bluegrass Cafe crew at the concert.

The picture is Bluegrass Cafe DJ, Jim, with Ralph Stanley about 12 years ago.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 7/1/2007

For me, Sunday's show was a lot of fun; hopefully, that's how the listeners felt, as well. We played a good number of old favorites, a few requests (marked in red), and some new music from one of the best traditional BG groups working right now in southern New England, Acoustic Blue. The second CD from this group is called "Empty House," and it's filled with a fine mix of traditional tunes and great originals. Lead singer/mandolin player Corey Zink has a killer voice -- check out this band when you get a chance.

July 4th marks 50 years since the groundbreaking Country Gentlemen first performed as a pick-up band at the Admiral Grill in Bailey's Crossroads, Virginia. To save a steady playing slot for car accident victim, Buzz Busby, his enterprising banjo man Bill Emerson called together a couple of his friends, the soon-to-be legendary John Duffey and Charlie Waller, as well as bass man Larry Leahy, and the Country Gentlemen were born. To mark this big occasion, we filled nearly an hour with the music of the early Gents, with tunes from their December 1957 sessions to about the mid-1960s. I could have easily filled up all three hours with the music of the Country Gents, but we'll save that for future shows....

Hope you all have a safe and happy 4th, and we'll see you again on July 15th.
