"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 3/24/2019

Sunday afternoon at WHUS was chock-full of sports programming with a UConn Baseball game that ended at 4:06PM, as well as 2nd Round NCAA Basketball Tournament time for the UConn Women's Basketball team at 7PM.  In between those times, though, we filled the the airwaves with the sounds of our Bluegrass Cafe.  Hope you were able to join us!

Mainline Express at Joe Val 2019.
The music that made up Sunday's playlist started with songs celebrating Spring, but also included a little bit of new music for 2019, including selections from Mainline Express, Dale Ann Bradley, Unspoken Tradition, and Nightflyer.

With so much sports activity at UConn in the Spring, we hope to join you for a full program next Sunday afternoon, but preeemptions are always possible this time of year.  We'll keep you posted.

Thanks for listening, and have a good week!

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 3/17/2019

There were no UConn Basketball or Baseball preemptions on Sunday, so we shared a full three hours of the Bluegrass Music on the radio.  As it also happens to be St. Patrick's Day, we included several Irish-themed tunes performed in a Bluegrass style.  In addition, there was a bit of brand-new music, a tribute to a Country Music Hall of Famer (Carl Smith, born 3/15/1927), and a few of my personal favorites, as always.

Among the new music for this week were selections from the Tim O'Brien Band, Andy Statman, Chris Jones & the Night Drivers, Christian Davis, and Rick Lang.

A few days ago, I celebrated my own birthday, so I used that as a good excuse to share a few of my favorites, as well.  :)  Thanks for letting me indulge myself.

Hope you enjoyed the show, and that you'll consider joining us once more next Sunday afternoon.

Have a fine week!

Amy O.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 3/10/2019

It was Bluegrass Cafe Express today, as the UConn Women's Basketball team are in the midst of a league tournament, and played a game today from 4-6PM, which happened to be broadcast on WHUS.  We may not get through the rest of March without another sports preemption, but as always, we will try to let you know when the showtime is going to be shortened.  Sunday just happened to be one of those days.

John Duffey giving Big Mon a few pointers?
In our 64 minute Sunday broadcast, we shared an eclectic mix of tunes new and not-as-new, and paid a belated Happy Birthday tribute to the late John Duffey (born March 4, 1934).

Hope to join you for a full three-hour broadcast next Sunday.  That's the plan, anyway.

Have a good week!

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 3/3/2019

As we waited for an early March snowstorm in eastern Connecticut, we opened Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe with an hour's worth of music from the Mac Wiseman Songbook.  The two-time Hall of Famer may have died one week ago at the age of 93, but his music will live with us forever.  On Sunday, we shared songs from Mac's earliest recording days with Lester Flatt & Earl Scruggs and Bill Monroe, songs recorded with duet partners as varied as Merle Haggard, John Prine, and Bill Harrell, and selections from Mac's 2016 "autobiography in song" collection from Mountain Fever Records, "I Sang The Song."

Want to learn more about "The Voice With A Heart?"  Mac's 2015 autobiography is titled, All My Memories Fit For Print.

Hope you enjoyed the show.  Please consider joining us next Sunday afternoon, 4-7PM.

Enjoy the week!

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 2/24/2019

Not too long before going on the air this afternoon, the news came that one of the true legends in the world of Bluegrass (and Country) music died earlier today.  Mac Wiseman had one of the most distinctive voices in all of Bluegrass music, and was a fine song stylist and performer who achieved much success on both sides of the microphone during his 8+ decades involved in the music industry.  While we didn't have time to pull together a full tribute to "The Voice With A Heart" for this week's show, we will be sure to play lots more music from Mac Wiseman next Sunday.  Hope you can join us.

Though today's show got a late start due to a UConn Basketball broadcast, we still managed to play music in celebration of several birthdays (those of Don Reno, Ralph Stanley, Pete Wernick, and Country Music Hall of Famer Faron Young).  We also remembered a 49-year-old mandolin-playing sideman who died this past week, Alan Perdue.

Hope to join you for a full three-hour broadcast next Sunday.  In the meantime, have a fine week!

Amy O.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 2/17/2019

For Sunday's edition of our Bluegrass Cafe, the focus was on a few of the performers showcased at the 34th annual Joe Val Bluegrass Festival, as well as birthday tributes to a Bluegrass Hall of Famer (Red Allen) and a future Bluegrass Hall of Famer (Dudley Connell).

While I wasn't able to stay for the entire Joe Val Festival this year, the bands I saw were really fine, and many of them were first-time festival invitees.  We shared music from a few of these bands during Sunday's show:  Carolina Blue, Appalachian Road Show, and High Fidelity.  Another band that made a big-festival debut at Joe Val was Mainline Express -- a band that includes Jesse Brock.  Seems like it's safe to say that all of these bands found themselves a few new fans in New England after their JV appearances.

There was a tiny bit of brand new music for Sunday, too, as we included selections from forthcoming recordings by the Edgar Loudermilk Band featuring Jeff Autry and Mile Twelve.

Hope you were able to join us on Sunday, but if not, you'll get another chance to tune in next Sunday afternoon, 4-7PM.

Enjoy the week!

Amy O.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 2/10/2018

Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe had a somewhat delayed start, as there was a UConn Men's Basketball broadcast.  Still, we managed to squeeze in a whole lot of fine music into our 2 hour, 50 minute program ~ hope you got to listen!

Among the features on Sunday's show:  a selection from each of the nominees for "Best Bluegrass Album" for this year's Grammy Awards (turns out the Travelin' McCourys were the winners); a whole set of positive love songs in honor of Valentine's Day; and birthday tributes to two Country Music Hall of Famers whose material has been widely recorded in the world of Bluegrass (Ernest Tubb born February 9, 1914 and the songwriter Boudleaux Bryant, who was born February 13, 1920).

If you missed a chance to listen to the show today, don't despair.  We will be back next Sunday, so be sure to join us from 4-7PM, if you're able.

Have a good week!

Amy O.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 2/3/2019

After a one-hour, sports-shortened program during the last week of January, our Bluegrass Cafe was full-length today.  The three hours were filled with birthday tributes, a remembrance, and a whole lot of new music.

February 1st is always a big day for birthdays in the World of Bluegrass, with four important musicians celebrating that day, including Jason Carter (born 1973) and David Parmley (1959), as well as two members of the Bluegrass Hall of Fame:  Tom Gray (1941) and Del McCoury (1939).  Becky Buller just missed the February 1st parade, as she celebrated her birthday on January 31st.

During the short show last week, we paid tribute to the late Maxine Brown of Country Music Hall of Famers, the Browns.  The Browns were not "Bluegrass" performers, but as with several other country performers of the 1950s and 1960s, some of their songs have been covered in Bluegrass.  We shared a couple of those songs on Sunday, too.

There was brand new music galore, too, with 2019 music from Big Country Bluegrass, Blue Moon Rising, Frank Solivan & Dirty Kitchen, the Tony Rook Band, Jeff Scroggins & Colorado, Joe Mullins & the Radio Ramblers (featuring Del McCoury), Aaron "Frosty" Foster, and Alan Bibey & Grasstowne.  Other recent music was from Balsam Range, Danny Paisley & the Southern Grass, and Carolina Blue.

Hope you got to tune in today, but if not...be sure to join us next Sunday afternoon, 4-7PM.

Have a good week!

Amy O.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 1/27/2019

We missed our broadcast last week due to icy weather in eastern Connecticut, and today, two hours of our broadcast time was given over to a UConn Women's Basketball game.  Still, we tried to squeeze in as much music as we could into a show reduced by two-thirds this week.  Hope you got to tune in!

Even though the show was shortened, we still found some time (and a few songs) to pay tribute to Country Music Hall of Famer Maxine Brown, who died on January 21st at the age of 87.  While not a Bluegrass performer, Maxine was a fine songwriter, and her autobiography, Looking Back To See, is worth a read for those who want to learn more about the musical adventures of a feisty Arkansas gal who attained Country Music's highest honor (with brother Jim Ed and sister Bonnie, of course).

Hope to join you next week for three full hours of our Bluegrass Cafe, weather- and sports-permitting!

Have a good week!
