"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 7/28/2024

As we opened last Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe, we played a few songs written by the late Bluegrasser, Ron Spears (July 28, 1953 - March 22, 2023).  It's hard to think of too many successful Bluegrassers born in the State of Utah, but Ron Spears was one of them -- and a very talented singer and songwriter he was.  

The Podunk Bluegrass Festival is coming up very soon, so we took some time mid-show to have a telephone chat with one of the Podunk performers for 2024:  Nick Chandler of Nick Chandler & Delivered.  Mr. Chandler will be performing on the Thursday and Friday of Podunk on the Main Stage, and he will also be conducting a mandolin workshop.  For a full look at the Podunk lineup, please visit their website ~ and we'll see you in Goshen!

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 7/21/2024

During Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe, we celebrated the three newly-announced inductees into the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame for 2024:  long-time Bluegrass broadcaster Katy Daley, as well as two top-notch musicians, Jerry Douglas and Alan Munde.  We will focus on some of the music of Jerry Douglas in a future program, but this past week, we enjoyed playing a whole lot of fine tunes from the banjo innovator and educator, Alan Munde.  To that end, we included selections from Alan's time with Jimmy Martin & the Sunny Mountain Boys, and also included music from Alan guesting with the Country Store and New Kentucky Colonels, with the Country Gazette, with Joe Carr, and a song or two from Alan's 2023 solo release for Patuxent Music, "Excelsior."  Great music.  Congratulations to all of the IBMA 2024 Hall of Famers!

We also belatedly celebrated the 70th birthday of Ricky Skaggs (born July 18, 1954).  This Kentucky-born member of the Country and Bluegrass Music Halls of Fame has long been an important entertainer and musician, from his time working with Ralph Stanley & the Clinch Mountain Boys as a teenager to his multi award-winning country music career and back to his return to Bluegrass in the mid-1990s.  We celebrated all of it with several songs from the span of Ricky's career.  

There was a tiny bit of newer music shared, though none of it was really brand-new.  Instead, we heard from 2024 releases from Authentic Unlimited, Bronwyn Keith-Hynes, Alison Brown & Steve Martin, Tony Trischka, the Del McCoury Band, Danny Paisley, Junior Sisk, the Price Sisters, a cut from the new Rick Lang-penned gospel recording, and the latest edition of the Cox Family.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 7/14/2024

With a whole lot of the country being impacted by soaring temperatures during this mid-July edition of our Bluegrass Cafe, we opted to open the show with a few "cold" songs.  Not sure how much we succeeded in cooling folks down, but the thought was there...

A tiny bit of new music made its way onto the program on Sunday, when we heard brand-new music from Dan Tyminski, Alan Bibey, and Thomas Cassell.  There was also music from recent releases from Missy Raines, Daniel Grindstaff, Tony Trischka, and Junior Sisk.

Several mid-July birthdays were celebrated, as well, including those of Rhonda Vincent, Mike Barber, Richard Underwood, Ricky Skaggs, and Wayne Taylor.  In honor of the late Charlie Louvin (July 7, 1927 - January 26, 2011), we shared lots of songs from the Louvin Brothers Songbook.  Charlie was the shorter, younger, guitar-playing member of this immensely talented brother duo, and he and brother Ira wrote many of the songs they recorded over the years.  Lots of Louvin songs have been covered by Bluegrass performers over the years -- so many that we could probably have filled the whole three hours with Louvin tunes.  On Sunday, though, we limited ourselves to 14 covers of Louvin-penned songs.  Great stuff!

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 7/7/2024

At the end of long holiday weekend, we opened up our Bluegrass Cafe with a few more appropriately patriotic selections.  Hope everyone has enjoyed the 4th!  We also included four versions of "New Freedom Bell" -- a classic Bluegrass tune written by Louise Osborne and first performed in 1951 by Louise and her brothers, Bobby and Sonny.  The Country Gentlemen recorded the song a few times throughout the band's long existence, with the first version being recorded by the Gents in 1959.  In addition to the Osbornes' original version, we shared three different Gents' versions of this patriotic classic.

While the vibe last week was mostly pretty festive, the Bluegrass community still lost two important members last week:  New England Bluegrass Pioneer, Herb Applin (April 10, 1938 - June 29, 2024) and DC-area bandleader and IBMA Distinguished Achievement Award winner, Cliff Waldron (April 4, 1941 - July 1, 2024).  We remembered the Bluegrass contributions of each of these gentlemen.  Herb Applin was an important fixture from the earliest days of New England Bluegrass, as he played with all sorts of bands ranging from the Lilly Brothers, Joe Val & the New England Bluegrass Boys, with Don Stover, and most recently, with the second incarnation of his own Old Time Bluegrass Singers.  We shared several selections either showcasing the brother-style harmonies of Joe Val and Herb Applin, or music from the Old Time Bluegrass Singers featuring Herb Applin.  Several years ago, Herb's OTBGS bandmate Dick Bowden interviewed Herb for an archival University of Kentucky Libraries Oral History Project interviewing Bluegrass Pioneers.  This interview is very entertaining and is a good watch for those who may be curious about the early days of Bluegrass in the Boston area.  Watch it by clicking on this link:

If Cliff Waldron had done nothing more than introduce "Fox On The Run" to the Bluegrass world (with early partner Bill Emerson), he would still be an important member of the Bluegrass community.  He did a ton more than that, though, sharing his warm vocals and musical talents on many fine songs over the years.  Cliff Waldron was recognized with a Distinguished Achievement Award from IBMA back in 2021, and was a member of the SPBGMA Hall of Greats.  

New music came to us from the Del McCoury Band (a fine new record called "Songs Of Love And Life" was released at the end of June).  We also belatedly celebrated three Bluegrass birthdays:  those of Jimmy Gaudreau, Peter Rowan, and Charlie Monroe.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 6/30/2024

Just moments before the start of Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe, parts of eastern Connecticut experienced a very big rainstorm.  In honor of the unstable weather, we started the show with five songs featuring rain.  Hopefully, the weather will be less wet this coming Sunday, but you just never know with the New England summer weather...

July 1st is the birthdate of three important members of the Bluegrass community,
so we remembered all of them during our program:  Bluegrass Hall of Famer Everett Lilly, Country Music Hall of Famer Keith Whitley, and longtime Lost & Found mandolinist, Dempsey Young.  We also included a number from the late banjo picker (and Bluegrass Hall of Famer), Allen Shelton.  And we couldn't forget two important historical events which took place during the first days of July:  the disappearance of Amelia Earhart's airplane in 1937 and the pivotal Battle of Gettysburg during the American Civil War (July 1-3, 1863).  

Can't forget to mention the new music we shared, as well, with a couple of selections from Tony Trischka's recently released "Earl Jam" recording, and songs from the Edgar Loudermilk Band, Blue Diggity, and Red Camel Collective.
