"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 5/26/2024

On this last Sunday of May, our Bluegrass Cafe included several songs telling stories about soldiers who never came home - the true meaning of our somber Memorial Day holiday.  Over the years, some have come to consider Memorial Day as the unofficial start of the summer season or as a time for lots of BBQ and parties and store sales, but it is much more than that.  During Sunday's show, we honored the military service of those who made the ultimate sacrifice for all of us.

May 26th is also the birth anniversary of Iris Deen Hall, known to the world as
Miss Dixie Hall (May 26, 1934 - January 16, 2015).  Along with her songwriting husband, Tom T. Hall, Miss Dixie was elected to the Bluegrass Hall of Fame in 2018.  During the latter part of their lifetimes, the Halls were incredible supporters of the Bluegrass community -- sharing their home, their recording studio, their financial support, and their prodigious songwriting skills.  There was a period of time in the 1990s and into the early 21st century where you didn't find many new CDs without a song written or co-written by Tom T. or Dixie Hall.  Amazing.  Together and separately, Tom T. and Miss Dixie wrote several hundred songs, and their constant support of the Bluegrass community will never be forgotten.  To honor Miss Dixie, we shared seven of her compositions during Sunday's show, though we could have easily filled the whole three hours with no repeats.  Incredible.

While we didn't share any brand-new recordings on Sunday, we did include recent single releases from forthcoming projects, or tunes from recent recordings.  These included songs from Danny Paisley & the Southern Grass, Jerry Salley, the Tim Raybon Band, and Authentic Unlimited.

Hope you enjoyed the show, and I do hope you'll consider joining me once more next Sunday afternoon from 4-7PM for another edition of our Bluegrass Cafe.

Enjoy the week!

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 5/19/2024

During Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe, we celebrated four big-name Bluegrass birthdays.  All four of these gentlemen -- Tom T. Hall, Red Smiley, Paul Warren, and Mac Wiseman -- are members of the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame.  Two of them further happen to be members of the Country Music Hall of Fame.  All four were important members of the Bluegrass community, and impacted the music with their outstanding talents...which we showcased during Sunday's show.

In addition, we shared a little bit of newer music, including selections from the new Rick Lang-penned gospel recording called, "Blue Collar Gospel:  From The Pen of Rick Lang."  There was also recent music from Rock Hearts, Bob Minner with John Cowan, the Del McCoury Band, Authentic Unlimited, Bronwyn Keith-Hynes, and Jerry Salley.

Hope you had a fine week, and that you'll consider joining me for another edition of our Bluegrass Cafe this Sunday afternoon from 4-7PM.

See you soon!

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 5/12/2024

Hanging out with my mother at Roy Acuff's house
During Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe, we covered lots of musical ground.  As it was Mother's Day, we celebrated MOM in song with twenty-one wonderful songs about her -- whether she's still with us, or lives on only in memory.  Hope all of the mothers had a fabulous day.

We also remembered the May birthday of Country Music Hall of Famer, Hank Snow (May 9, 1914 - December 20, 1999).  Many songs originally performed and/or written by the Singing Ranger have been covered in the world of Bluegrass over the years, so we enjoyed a few of them on Sunday.

Two important members of the Bluegrass community recently passed, and we couldn't let the show go by without remembering them.  Frank Wakefield (June 26, 1934 - April 26, 2024) was an incredibly talented mandolinist with a super-unique personality.  Smiling Jim Mills (December 18, 1966 - May 3, 2024) was not only a top-notch banjo picker who worked for many years both with Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver as well as Ricky Skaggs & Kentucky Thunder, but he was also a noted expert on pre-war Gibson banjos.  We celebrated both of these gentlemen on Sunday afternoon.

New music was a big part of the program on Sunday, too, and we included brand-new (or recent) music from several performers, including Jason Carter & Michael Cleveland, Williamson Branch, Becky Buller, the Grascals, the Lonesome River Band, Adam McIntosh, Volume Five, Seth Mulder & Midnight Run, and Junior Sisk.

Hope you enjoyed the show!  Please consider joining me once more this coming Sunday afternoon from 4-7PM.
