"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 5/31/2020

All aboard!  Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe devoted one hour plus to songs about trains -- freight trains, diesel trains, the romance of the train, black trains, midnight trains, glory bound trains -- you name it!  We could easily devote several shows to just this one topic...and may spend another hour in a future program doing just that!

We also paid birthday tribute to the late Hazel Dickens, who was born on June 1, 1925.  The songs of this Bluegrass Hall of Famer continue to be frequently recorded, but on this day's show, Hazel was the featured performer.

There was a bit of newer music to share, too, with a brand-spanking new song from Carolina Blue, as well as new music from the likes of songwriter Eric Brace, Professor Dan Boner, the Feinberg Brothers, High Fidelity, Dale Ann Bradley & Tina Adair, Stephen Mougin, J.B. & Jamie Dailey, and Junior Sisk.

Hope you are enjoying our pre-recorded programs.  We'll continue to keep bringing them to you for as long as we can, but we sure do look forward to the day when the show can once again be broadcast live as it's happening.  In the meantime, be sure to email us at bgcafe@gmail.com and/or visit our Facebook page.

Have a great week, and, as always, stay healthy!

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 5/24/2020

Two words defined our Bluegrass Cafe on this Memorial Day Sunday:  remember and celebrate.

In honor of Memorial Day, we shared several songs written about the subject of soldiers who didn't make it home from war.  Take a moment this weekend to remember the real reason for Memorial Day.

We celebrated the 84th birthday of the a man known as The Storyteller, Tom T. Hall (born May 25, 1936).  Along with his wife, the late Miss Dixie, Tom T. Hall is a member of the International Bluegrass Hall of Fame.  A native of Olive Hill, Kentucky, Tom T. Hall was part of a Bluegrass band in his youth, but made his living, of course, as a songwriter and performer of mainstream country music in the 1960s through the 1990s.  After he retired from his Country Music Hall of Fame-earning career, though, Tom T. combined with Miss Dixie devoted much of their time and talents to writing Bluegrass songs, and promoted having these songs recorded by Bluegrass performers.  Many bands have recorded songs written by or co-written by Tom T. Hall, and we spent our entire second hour listening to a few of those songs by performers as varied as Charlie Sizemore, Josh Williams, Michael Cleveland & Flamekeeper, the Gibson Brothers, Longview, Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, Junior Sisk & Ramblers Choice, the Spinney Brothers, and Jimmy Martin, just to name a few.

The show started with a belated birthday celebration of another member of both the Country Music and Bluegrass Music Halls of Fame:  Mac Wiseman (May 23, 1925 - February 25, 2019).  We always enjoy sharing music from The Voice With A Heart.

There wasn't that much new music to share this week, but we did share a new song from the Edgar Loudermilk Band, as well as a tune from Troy Engle's new record devoted to the music he co-wrote with Tom T. and Dixie Hall.  In addition, we included two more songs from the great new Rebel recording from the super-traditional band known as High Fidelity.  Their "Banjo Player's Blues" is a dandy, and we'll be hearing lots more from it in future broadcasts.

Hope you all are doing well.  Don't forget to send us an email (bgcafe@gmail.com) or visit our Facebook page, if you're so inclined.

Take good care, and stay healthy!

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 5/17/2020

Happy Sunday!  Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe was episode #5 of the pre-recorded variety and featured birthday tributes to three Bluegrass Hall of Famers, one Country Music Hall of Famer, and a few new songs for good measure.  Hope you enjoyed the show!

Paul Warren (May 17, 1918 - January 12, 1978)
Red Smiley (May 17, 1925 - January 2, 1972)
May 17th just happens to be the birthdate of three members of the Bluegrass Hall of Fame:  the great fiddler Paul Warren (May 17, 1918 - January 12, 1978), Arthur "Red" Smiley (May 17, 1925 - January 2, 1972), and Rodney Dillard (born May 17, 1942).  To that end, we shared music featuring all of them during the program.

Hank Snow (May 9, 1914 - December 20, 1999)
We also remembered Hank Snow -- the great Country Music Hall of Famer who was born on May 9, 1914.  Hank Snow was a wonderful guitar player, songwriter, and song stylist, and many songs from his song catalog have been recorded in a Bluegrass style.  We included several songs featuring the distinctive voice of Hank Snow, and several Snow covers by performers as varied as the Country Gentlemen, the Warrior River Boys, the Case Brothers, Bear Bridge Band, Audie Blaylock, Special Consensus, and the Lost & Found.

There was a bit of new music to share on this Sunday, as well.  Included were new singles from Balsam Range, Colebrook Road, Nick Chandler & Delivered, Merle Monroe, and the Alex Leach Band.  In addition, there was 2020 music from the Feinberg Brothers, J.B. & Jamie Dailey, and Flashback.

Hope you enjoyed our program.  If you would like to get in touch with us, you're always invited to send an email to bgcafe@gmail.com or check out our Facebook page.

Have a good week, and stay healthy!

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 5/10/2020

Two gals at Indian Ranch in 1989 --
my mother, Eleanor Orlomoski & her big-haired daughter
On this somewhat chilly May Sunday (in eastern Connecticut, anyway), we are celebrating MOTHER during our Bluegrass Cafe!  Mother has always been a popular subject to sing about in many country and folk songs -- as she should be!  :)  While we could have filled our whole three hours with songs about mother, instead, we picked out almost twenty-five favorites to share.  Hope you enjoyed 'em -- and, of course, Happy Mother's Day!!

We remembered the mid-May birthdays of two members of a country music brother duet of the 1940s and 1950s who were actually not blood kin, but brothers-in-law.  Johnnie Wright and Jack Anglin -- of the duo simply called Johnnie & Jack -- were both born on May 13th:  Johnnie in 1914 and Jack in 1916.  Their music is still fun to listen to, and pops up now and again being covered by other performers.  To that end, we heard music from Johnnie & Jack, as well as the Country Gentlemen, the Sidemen, and Wilma Lee Cooper.

New music was a big part of our Sunday broadcast, too.  We heard tracks from several CDs that will either be or have already been released in 2020.  Hope you enjoyed the new music from Special Consensus, Frank Poindexter, Flashback, J.B. & Jamie Dailey, Laurie Lewis, Stephen Mougin, Becky Buller, FastTrack, High Fidelity, Junior Sisk, the South Carolina Broadcasters, and the Feinberg Brothers.

Since we still can't produce our broadcast for you live in studio, you are still (and always!) invited to contact us via email or follow our Facebook page.

Hope you enjoyed the show!  Please join us again for another Bluegrass Cafe next Sunday afternoon from 4-7PM, won't you?

Have a great week -- and stay healthy!

Amy O.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 5/3/2020

Happy May!  Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe brought us more down a country road than usual, but still, we left a lot of room for both classic Bluegrass favorites and some newer music, too.

September 9, 1983 -- a very excited young fan gets an
autograph from Harold Reid of the Statler Brothers.
As we pre-record our shows for broadcast these days, the radio show tends to get produced on the Tuesday or Wednesday before the show airs.  This means that we are not going to be able to be super-timely in producing these shows, but we'll get by as best we can.  On Friday, April 24th, the Country Music Hall of Famer Harold Reid of the Statler Brothers died from kidney failure.  Unfortunately, we couldn't remember Harold during the broadcast on April 26th, but there's no way we could not honor him at least a little bit during the next show to air, which happens to be today -- May 3rd.  From the time I was around 5 or 6 years old, I have been a big fan of the Statler Brothers.  No, the Statlers never were  Bluegrass and really, their music has not been overly-covered by Bluegrass performers over the years...until Dailey & Vincent came around, anyway.  Clearly, D&V admire the Statlers as much as (or more than) I do, as they made a whole record honoring the Statlers' music.  They even got Harold to come out of retirement and help them on another song they recorded.  To that end, we listened to some Dailey & Vincent and some Statler music, and, of course, we couldn't forget the ol' Roadhog, either.

We also ended up sharing a half-dozen tunes from the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's very successful album, "Will The Circle Be Unbroken, Volume Two," which was released on May 1, 1989.  This record was similar to the 1972 predecessor ("Will The Circle Be Unbroken") in that it brought some country music pioneers in to record with the country rock band.  Circle 2 expanded the circle perhaps a little bit wider with contributions from everyone from Earl Scruggs, Jimmy Martin, and Roy Acuff to Chris Hillman, John Prine, and John Denver.  We played some of the more Bluegrass-sounding tracks during Sunday's show.

There was still time for newer music, too, and so, we heard selections from Mile Twelve with Billy Strings, Larry Cordle, Daryl Mosley, Special Consensus, and Connecticut's own ShoreGrass.  Other 2020 music came from the Feinberg Brothers, Junior Sisk, and the duo of Dale Ann Bradley & Tina Adair.

Hope you all are continuing to do well during our isolation days.  Please join me again next Sunday for another edition of our Bluegrass Cafe.

Have a good week!

Amy O.
