"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 11/22/2017

On my way home from church on Sunday morning, a quick Facebook check alerted me that Country Music Hall of Famer Mel Tillis had died at the age of 85.  During his 50+ year career, Mel Tillis wrote more than 1,000 songs, several of which have been covered in the Bluegrass world.  Though he wasn't a Bluegrass performer, I knew I wanted to try to throw together a Mel Tillis remembrance for Sunday's show, but only had about an hour to figure out what to play.  Still, in that short amount of time, it was pretty simple to pull together thirteen fine songs from the Mel Tillis Songbook, twelve of which were written or co-written by Mel.  May he rest in peace.

We also shared a few songs from Ernie

Thacker, a wonderful Bluegrass singer who learned some very sad news this week.  Read more about Ernie and his family's situation in this recent blog post from Bluegrass Today.  There are also several fundraising campaigns and events to raise money for Ernie's family.  Read more about one of them here.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 11/5/2017

A little late in getting this posted, but still...better late than never.

A most excellent autobiography
from 80-year-old Whisperin' Bill

During Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe, we shared some newer music, some classic tunes, and this week, paid special Bluegrass tribute to an important member of the Country Music Hall of Fame, Whisperin' Bill Anderson.  Mr. Anderson came to fame as the songwriter of Ray Price's big 1958 hit, "City Lights."  After that, he was signed to a recording contract of his own, but throughout the decades, Bill Anderson has remained a well-recorded songwriter.  Our Bluegrass tribute in honor of Whisperin' Bill's 80th birthday (born November 1, 1937) consisted of fourteen Bluegrass covers, plus one song sung by ol' Bill, himself. 

 

There was a bit of newer music shared on the program, too.  To that end, we heard songs from the likes of the Grascals, Mark Kuykendall, Bobby Hicks & Asheville Bluegrass, the Darrell Webb Band, Shannon Slaughter, Big Country Bluegrass, the O'Connor Band with Mark O'Connor, Mike Barnett, and Steve Martin & the Steep Canyon Rangers.
