"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 6/21/2015

Happy Birthday, Eddie Adcock!
June 21st was a day to celebrate a lot of things:  the First Day of Summer, Father's Day, and the 77th birthday of a bona fide Bluegrass legend (and Bluegrass Hall of Famer) - Eddie Adcock.

My own father, Alton Orlomoski
For Father's Day, we played several selections featuring Dear Old Dad as the primary subject from lots of performers, including Russell Moore & IIIrd Tyme Out, the Gibson Brothers, Bob Paisley & the Southern Grass, Dale Ann Bradley, the Spinney Brothers, and New England bands, Traver Hollow and the Bear Bridge Band.  Many bands in the Bluegrass World include fathers and their offspring -- male and female.  To that end, there was lots of music from bands with fathers and sons, and even some fathers and daughters!  Those bands included Bill Monroe with James Monroe, Bob Paisley & the Southern Grass, Earl Scruggs with Family & Friends, the Whites, Ralph Stanley with Ralph Stanley II, the Bluegrass Cardinals, the Del McCoury Band, the Feinberg Brothers, White Mountain Bluegrass, and the Tennessee Mafia Jug Band.

A tiny bit of newer music was in the show, too, most notably a couple of songs from the new Big Country Bluegrass recording from Rebel Records called "Country Livin'."  Other newer recordings came from Darren & Brooke Aldridge, Sideline, Billy Hurt, Jr., the Feinberg Brothers, Troy Boone, the Trinity River Band, Louie Setzer, Bear MinimumVolume Five, and David Peterson.

Next Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe will have a guest host, and we sure hope you'll tune in!  Have yourself a great week!

Amy

Playlist - 6/14/2015

Hi Folks.

Today was BMI reporting day, so songwriter information for all songs on the show was reported.

The featured segment was an interview with David Peterson on the release of his seventh album, Old Time Power.  This is David's first bluegrass album in a decade and his first all gospel effort in 20 years.  It's a good one, too.  David literally had a who's who of top bluegrass musicians helping him out --names like Grisman, Compton, Cushman, Crouch, and Duncan. You will be hearing much more of it in coming months.

We introduced new music from Robert Lester & James Stiltner -- a great singer and picker duo from western Virginia.  We also had new music from Lorraine Jordan & Carolina RoadDale Ann Bradley, and Dr. Ralph and Nathan Stanley.

Other current favorites were Steve Gulley, Tommy Brown, Marteka and William (who also provided the background for the events calendar), Adkins & Loudermilk, The Spinney Brothers, The Gibson Brothers, Darin & Brooke Aldridge, Larry Gillis, and Larry Sparks.

Heritage Corner selections included music from Reno, Smiley, & Harrell; Buzz Busby; Charlie Moore; Red Allen & Frank Wakefield; J. E. Mainer; and The Lilly Brothers & Don Stover.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 6/7/2015

During Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe, we were able to debut several brand new recordings, celebrate a couple of Bluegrass birthdays, and even give away a few tickets to an upcoming Seldom Scene show at Infinity Hall in Hartford.  How fun!

For the new, we played several songs from two debut recordings:  one from a Long Island-based traditional band fronted by two teenage brothers -- the Feinberg Brothers -- and the second is the debut recording of a brother-style duo whose members are two old friends -- Bear Minimum.  We played three songs from each recording, and it's a pretty good guess that we'll be playing a bunch more from each record in the not-too-distant future.  Be on the lookout for both the Feinbergs and Bear Minimum playing at shows all over New England and New York this summer.

Our old friend David Peterson also has a brand new recording, and this time, it's a gospel one:  "Old Time Power."  Jim has plans to talk to David sometime this week, and perhaps you'll be able to hear his interview in coming editions of Bluegrass Cafe.

As far as birthday celebrations, we played a selection of songs from the pen of a New Hampshire songwriter celebrating his 68th birthday today (June 7th):  Rick Lang.  We also shared music from the late guitar picker, Clarence White, who would have celebrated his birthday today, as well (born June 7, 1944).

In addition from new music from the Feinberg Brothers, Bear Minimum, and David Peterson, we also shared a few fairly recent recordings from Sideline, the Spinney Brothers, the Tennessee Mafia Jug Band, the Gibson Brothers, and Cody Shuler.

Sure hope you'll be able to join Jim next Sunday for another full three hours of the Bluegrass Cafe!

Have a great week!

Amy

Hi Folks.

South Carolina Broadcasters
The first of two major bluegrass festivals in the state of Connecticut -- Strawberry Park Bluegrass Festival -- had just ended when this show aired.  I enjoyed emceeing some of the festival, and several of the bands on the schedule at Strawberry Park were heard on this show along with much more music.  There was more of a "heritage" flavor to this show than usual with many songs coming from my archives.

Gibson Brothers at Strawberry Park

Of the Strawberry Park performers, we heard The South Carolina Broadcasters who were introduced to Eastern Connecticut last year at the same festival, and invited back this year.  They are working on their fifth album which we are eager to hear. We also heard from The Buckstankle Boys who were not at the festival, but whose fiddler, Andy Edmonds, is a member of the SC Broadcasters along with David and Ivy Sheppard.   World favorites The Gibson Brothers, riding high on their latest duo album, "Brotherhood," made two appearances on the show separated by more than 20 years.  Their earlier work still holds up.

Besides the Gibson Brothers, the show included newer music from Laura Orshaw, The Spinney Brothers, Tommy Brown, The Crowe Brothers, Jackson & Stiltner, Junior Sisk, Songs From The Road Band, Johnny Williams, Larry Sparks, The Earls of Leicester, and the debut of Mt. Airy NC band The Marshall Brothers and Highroad.  We also debuted Lizzy Long's new album on this show.

The Heritage Corner archives contributed mightily to this show with songs from Earl Taylor and the Stoney Mountain Boys, Buzz Busby, Bea Lilly, Chubby Anthony, Don Stover, Mac Martin, Larry Richardson, The Dillards, a new re-release of J.E. Mainer, Jimmie Williams & Red Ellis, Karl Shiflett, Curly Seckler, and Butch Robins.

Amy will bring you next Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe, so tune in to hear the banjos and fiddles ring.
