"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 5/24/2015

It's Memorial Day weekend!  To that end, we shared a good number of songs that were written about soldiers who didn't make it home.  Make sure you take a moment to remember what the holiday is all about sometime this weekend.

Happy 90th, Mac Wiseman!
We also celebrated two important music icons who celebrated birthdays this weekend:  Bob Dylan, who turned 74 on May 24th and Country Music and Bluegrass Hall of Famer, Mac Wiseman, who celebrated his 90th birthday on May 23rd.  In the case of the former, to start off the show, we shared four songs written by Bob Dylan which have been covered in the Bluegrass World.  For Mac Wiseman, we played a few songs performed by "The Voice With A Heart," as well as numbers that he recorded during his time with Bill Monroe &  His Blue Grass Boys and Lester Flatt & Earl Scruggs.  Mac Wiseman -- what a life!

There was a whole bunch of music to be heard from projects which have recently been released or will soon be released including recordings from Sideline, Big Country Bluegrass, Gold Heart, the Band of Ruhks, Dale Ann Bradley, and Russell Moore & IIIrd Tyme Out.  There was other newer music from Chris Jones & the Night Drivers, Feller & Hill, Michelle Canning, Darin & Brooke Aldridge, and Adkins & Loudermilk.

Hope you enjoyed something you heard today, and that you will be sure to join Jim next Sunday for another edition of Bluegrass Café.

Happy Memorial Day!

Amy

A guitar-centric fill-in - 5/19/2015

This rainy Tuesday morning found me at WHUS filling in for the vacationing John Veseskis, who is the host of guitar-themed program known as "Red House."  John has never left me with any kind of restrictions on what kind of music he'd like me to play while he's away, but since there are so darn many wonderful guitar players in both Bluegrass and Country Music, it's always fairly easy to fill a 2-hour program.

On Tuesday, we included a whole 30 minute set full of songs with one common element:  each had the word "guitar" in the title.  We also put a little bit of a spotlight on a couple of mighty fine guitar pickers:  Hank Snow, Tony Rice, Jerry Reed, and Don Rich.

If you got a chance to tune in this morning, thanks!  If not, be sure to join me on Sunday afternoon from 4-7PM for another edition of our Bluegrass Cafe!

Enjoy the week!

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 5/10/2015

Happy Mother's Day to Eleanor Orlomoski --
and to ALL wonderful mothers!
Sunday was a day to celebrate both mothers and new college graduates at the University of Connecticut.  While there aren't any songs (that we know about) to celebrate those who fall in the latter category, we sure found bunches and bunches of songs about mother to play on the ol' radio.  Hope you enjoyed 'em -- and that you were able to enjoy your Sunday with family and friends!

In addition to mother songs on Sunday, we remembered two Country Music legends who would have celebrated their birthdays this past weekend:  Hank Snow (born May 9, 1914) and Mother Maybelle Carter (born May 10, 1909). In the case of Hank, we played the well-known medley of a few of his songs from the Country Gentlemen, as well as a couple of Bluegrass covers of songs by the Singing Ranger.  As far Maybelle, we included two songs written in tribute about her, as well as the absolutely legendary original track of "Wildwood Flower," circa 1928ish.

We just couldn't forget the duo of Johnnie & Jack this week, either.  Johnnie
Johnnie & Jack -
looks like a Bluegrass band to me!
Wright
and Jack Anglin were singing partners for many years and were, in fact, brothers-in-law.  They also happened to share a birthday:  May 13th.  Johnnie was born that day in 1914; Jack on that same day in 1916.  Again, these two may not have been considered "Bluegrass" as that term just didn't exist when they were working.  However, if Johnnie & Jack were starting out today with their Tennessee Mountain Boys, they would certainly be a Bluegrass band.  Delightful.

The emphasis today wasn't so much on "new" Bluegrass, but we still played a little bit of it from the likes of John Curtis Goad, Springfield Exit, Junior Sisk & Ramblers Choice, the Spinney Brothers, Volume Five, Michelle Canning, and the Gibson Brothers

Hope you enjoyed a relaxing Mother's Day, and that you'll be sure to join us once again next Sunday for another Bluegrass Cafe!

Enjoy the week!

Amy

Playlist - 5/3/2015

Hi Folks,

While uconn baseball preempted most of the Red Rooster Party, we took advantage of the last half-hour left over for that show to extend Bluegrass Cafe to a 3-1/2 hour show.

Since this was my first post-Radiothon show (by the way, thank you very much for the tremendous support!), I let loose with a bucket full of rarities from my personal collection as well as a handful of newer releases.

The new included a brand new re-release of an old J. E. Mainer album -- the fourth in a series of 20 -- recorded in 1968 on the Rural Rhythm label.  We also heard a new release of some older live performances of Jimmy Martin.  In the real new category we heard music from both Christopher Henry and Laura Orshaw.  We introduced a new track from the upcoming fifth album from The South Carolina Broadcasters as well as a track from their out-of-print first album.

Other recent music included cuts from Larry Gillis, The Gibson Brothers, Becky Buller, Breaking Grass, Fiddlin' Billy Hurt, Marteka & William, Tommy Brown, Doyle Lawson, The Spinney Brothers, Mountain Faith, Johnny Williams, and Larry Sparks.

I admit to going a little crazy with our Heritage Corner on this show with a great selection of classic vinyl LPs, 45s, and classic reissues.  We reached back to hear music from The Dillards, Buzz Busby, Larry Richardson, Red Allen & Frank Wakefield, Don Stover, Bob Paisley, Earl Taylor, The Border Mountain Boys, The Mountain Ramblers, Wade Ward, Don Reno & Bill Harrell, Rusty York, The Kelleys, and electrifying gospel from Early Upchurch, Ray Baker, J. D. Jarvis, Landon Messer, Chief Powatan, Carl Story, and The Lilly Brothers & Don Stover

Amy will be with you next Sunday to make the banjos and fiddles ring, so join her for some great bluegrass.
