"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 4/26/2015

So long, Tex Logan (at the upper right corner)
As promised, for our first Bluegrass Cafe post-Radiothon fundraising, there was A LOT of music and relatively little talk.  The selections played included a bunch of CDs from our library that haven't been played much (if at all) in recent years, some newer recordings to keep things interesting, a few classic songs from super-classic performers, and a couple of songs featuring the late Benjamin F. "Tex" Logan, who died this past Friday evening.

Tex Logan -- along with the Lilly Brothers and Don Stover -- is credited with bringing what would come to be known as Bluegrass Music to New England when they performed on the radio in Boston in the early 1950s as the Confederate Mountaineers.  If he did nothing else in the world of Bluegrass, that would be a significant-enough contribution.  However, Tex Logan will alway be remembered as the composer of THE Bluegrass Christmas standard, "Christmas Time's A-Comin'" -- a song recorded by many performers including Bill Monroe, Johnny Cash, Patty Loveless, and others.  After a busy, successful career as a mathematician for New Jersey's Bell Laboratories and a whole lot of great work as a fiddler over the years, Tex Logan died at the age of 87 on April 24th.  His memory will live on...

New music has arrived from Massachusetts-based
Michelle Canning...
Radiothon fundraising went pretty well for us, as over the course of two Sundays, we raised right around $2,000 for WHUS.  Your support is very much appreciated not just at Radiothon, but year-round -- THANKS!!!

Jim will join you for another Bluegrass Cafe next Sunday afternoon starting at 4PM.  Be sure to join him!

Enjoy the week!

Amy

Radiothon 2015 wrap-up & playlist - 4/19/2015

Jim demonstrates the 50-LP
capacity and sturdiness of the WHUS
Radiothon tote
Another Radiothon has come and gone at WHUS, and we're delighted to tell you that with your wonderful support, we were able to raise right around $2,000 for WHUS during our two weeks of fundraising!  Thanks so much for your kind and generous contributions!

As always, we need to extend our thanks to some fine record labels who gave us a whole lot of support during Radiothon.  For their top-notch contributions, we thank Mountain Fever Records, Mountain Home, Patuxent Music, Rebel Records, and Rounder Records.  An informal poll of our most popular music premium requests seems to point to the Gibson Brothers' "Brotherhood" being the most popular title.  That hardly seems too surprising to us...

While we generally limited our playlist to selections from the premiums available for Radiothon this year, we also included a whole bunch of songs form a 20-year-old-but-still-wonderful collection from Rebel Records celebrating their 30th anniversary as a record label ("Rebel Records--35 Years Of The Best In Bluegrass").  In fact, we gave away a copy of that 4-CD box set, as well as a copy of Phil Zimmerman's delightful photo book called Bluegrass Time, as part of a special drawing at the end of Radiothon.  The winner's name was drawn from all of the names of folks who had made a pledge during Bluegrass Cafe for Radiothon this year.
All three phones busy during Radiothon Week #1

Once again, we need to thank our fabulous phone operators for 2015:  Cathy Ward, Clyde Proch, Scott Farrar, and Eleanor Orlomoski.  Even our fellow long-time WHUS broadcaster, John Veseskis, was able to help us a bit -- big THANKS to all of them!

We strayed from the Radiothon selections for a few minutes on Sunday afternoon by playing songs from some recently released (or soon-to-be-released) recordings.  Among those selections came music from Big Country Bluegrass, Ronnie Reno, Cedar Hill, Steve Gulley & New Pinnacle, and Feller & Hill.  We also heard new music from two New England performers:  the first CD from a Massachusetts banjo picker, Michelle Canning, and a track from the forthcoming debut project from Bear Minimum (an offshoot of the Bear Bridge Band).

Next Sunday's show will feature LOTS of music and very little talk.  Hope you'll consider joining us following the UConn Baseball broadcast on Sunday afternoon.

One more Sunday for Radiothon -- 4/19/2015

Today is the last day of Radiothon for 2015 (that we know about, anyway), and so, that means we will have one more three hour session of Bluegrass Cafe in which we ask you for your support of both the program and all of the other broadcasts we offer at WHUS.  If you can help us out with a pledge, please do!  We've got many, many ways of saying THANKS for your gifts, and, as promised, we've got a special end-of-Radiothon GRAND PRIZE that we'll be giving away around 6:55PM this evening.

This year's GRAND PRIZE consists of two wonderful items:  the 4-CD box set celebrating Rebel Records' first 35 years of existence (1960-1995), AND a copy of Phil Zimmerman's fine book of photos, Bluegrass Time:  A Musician's Photographs Of The Early Days Of Bluegrass.  To have your name entered into the GRAND PRIZE drawing, you simply need to make a pledge of support to Bluegrass Cafe sometime between 4:00PM and 6:55PM tonight.  The amount of your pledge can be anything from $5 to $500 or any amount in between.  How do you do that?  Call our wonderful phone operators this afternoon:  1-800-599-9487.  We always love hearing from you, but we especially enjoy knowing that you're listening during Radiothon!  Help us out, if you can!

If you made a pledge to the show and WHUS during last week's Bluegrass Cafe, your name is already in the drawing for our GRAND PRIZE.

If you're wondering about what sort of musical premiums we have to offer this year, check out the list posted here.  Keep in mind that the individual recordings donated by Mountain Home are not listed in that link, but suffice it to say, we also have the latest recordings from the Boxcars, Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, Darin & Brooke Aldridge, Flatt Lonesome, and a couple others.  Big thanks to all of the record labels who provided recordings for us this year:  Mountain Fever Records, Mountain Home, Rebel, Rounder, and Patuxent Music.

Jim & I will look forward to hearing from you today...and THANKS!!

Amy

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 4/12/2015 RADIOTHON WEEK #1

Our loyal, somewhat busy operators on Sunday:
Eleanor Orlomoski, Clyde Proch, & Scott Farrar
It's the Season of Radiothon at WHUS!  If you tuned in to Sunday's show, you KNOW that we didn't play half as much music as we might normally play during a 3-hour broadcast.  While we don't necessarily like to talk, talk, talk all the time (honestly!), Jim and I do enjoy hearing from you during Radiothon.  We don't have any station-suggested goals for fundraising this year, but Jim and I did come up with a totally unofficial goal for our 3 hours on Sunday -- we wanted to make at least $1,000.  Well, thanks to your amazing generosity, we took in nearly $1,200 during our three hours of radio time, so THANKS!!!

We've got lots of great CDs to offer  -
and some nifty sweatshirts, too!
Rest easy, of course -- if you didn't get a chance to call in and make a pledge on Sunday, you've still got next Sunday's show to make the commitment to support our college and community radio at WHUS!

Special thanks to our wonderful record labels who were so generous in supporting our fundraising by donating and/or making available some fine CDs for us at WHUS:  Mountain Fever Records, Mountain Home, Patuxent Music, Rebel, and Rounder Records!  We couldn't do it without you!  Our playlist selections on Sunday were limited to the recordings we have available for premiums -- and there are lots of terrific recordings we were able to showcase there.

Sure hope you can join us for next Sunday's radio show -- Radiothon Week #2!  If you'd prefer to make a pledge during the week, you can do so by visiting this link.

Thanks again!  Enjoy the week!

Coming VERY soon to a radio near you...WHUS Radiothon 2015!

As you may have heard, the 2015 edition of Radiothon begins this coming Saturday, April 11th at WHUS.  This means that we will have two Sundays of fundraising, and we will be looking to you for some financial support from you.  In years past, we've done extremely well during Radiothon, and we've been honored to know that Bluegrass Cafe is the LARGEST fundraising music program at WHUS!  Not sure if that will prove to be true again this year, but to "entice" you a bit to support our program once more, we've been accumulating some wonderful recordings to offer you as "thank you" gifts!  While we're still gathering a few more recordings, so far we have these delightful CDs (multiple copies of a few of them):

  • Adkins & Loudermilk - "Adkins & Loudermilk" (Mountain Fever Records)
  • Red Allen & Frank Wakefield - "The WDON Recordings, 1963" (Patuxent Music)
  • Crowe Brothers - "Forty Years Old" (Mountain Fever Records)
  • Monroe Fields with the Green Valley Boys - "1950s-60s Broadcasts" (Patuxent Music)
  • Victor Furtado - "Victor Furtado" (Patuxent Music)
  • Jimmy Gaudreau & Moondi Klein - "If I Had A Boat" (Rebel Records)
  • Gibson Brothers - "Brotherhood" (Rounder Records)
  • Hammertowne - "Highways & Heartaches" (Mountain Fever Records)
  • Billy Hurt, Jr. - "Fiddlin' Billy Hurt" (Patuxent Music)
  • James Leva - "All Over The Map" (Patuxent Music)
  • Joe Mullins & the Radio Ramblers - "Another Day From Life" (Rebel Records)
  • Larry Rice - "If You Only Knew:  The Best Of Larry Rice" (Rebel Records)
  • Junior Sisk & Ramblers Choice - "Trouble Follows Me" (Rebel Records)
  • Spinney Brothers - "Tried & True" (Mountain Fever Records)
  • Springfield Exit - "That Was Then" (Patuxent Music)
  • Various - "The Patuxent Banjo Project" (Patuxent Music)
  • Volume Five - "Voices" (Mountain Fever Records)
Our thanks to Mountain Fever Records, Mountain Home, Patuxent Music, Rebel Records, and Rounder Records for their kind support of Radiothon!  We look forward to thanking YOU on Sunday with one of these great CDs -- or perhaps, one of our other WHUS "thank you" gifts for Radiothon.  Join Jim and I on Sunday afternoon from 4-7PM, won't you?

Thanks!

Playlist - 4/5/2015

Hi Folks.

Just prior to the show I read a remembrance of a live Bill Monroe concert by Everett Alan Lilly who had been recruited while a teen to play bass for the October 1964 gig.  Everett had just discovered several recordings from the concert were on a disc of live Monroe recordings from Smithsonian Folkways, and was elated to be able to hear now what had been a memory for more than fifty years. After reading that story, I had to begin the show with "Raw Hide" and "Y'all Come" from that concert.

We introduced some new music on this show including songs from Steve Gulley and New Pinnacle and Ronnie Reno.

Other newer music included tracks from The Gibson Brothers, Becky Buller, Cody Shuler, Adkins & Loudermilk, Tommy Brown, Volume Five, Johnny Warren & Charlie Cushman, and Mountain Faith

We had a vinyl set selected from our Heritage Corner archives that included gems from Benny and Vallie Cain, Nolan Faulkner and James Miller, Phyllis Boyens, The Doug Dillard Band, Bill Hall & Northwind, Don Stover, and Hylo Brown (we played Hylo's only studio recording of his Grand Ole Opry Song, recorded 1977.)

Additional Heritage Corner material included Larry Richardson & Red Barker, Red Allen & Frank Wakefield, Jimmy Martin, The Church Brothers, Dee Stone, Jimmie Williams & Red Ellis, The Stanley Brothers, J. D. Jarvis, and in the week of the 56th anniversary of the first performance of a bluegrass band at Carnegie Hall, we saluted Earl Taylor and the Stoney Mountain Boys.  We'll get the actual recordings of that concert on a future show as we dig them out of the Heritage Corner archives.

The closing inspirational and gospel set carried a Good Friday/Easter theme in observance of the day.

Radiothon will cover the next two Sunday shows, so listen for the whole gang as we encourage you to support WHUS -- the station that allows us to bring you this great music.
