"Bluegrass Cafe" - 8/25/2013

Sunday's show was our first sports-shortened broadcast in a while, as the WHUS Sports Department is back to work broadcasting a whole lot of the various sports activities that take place at the University of Connecticut.  On Sunday night, a Women's Soccer game took place, so Bluegrass Cafe was a 2-hour show instead of a 3-hour show.  Still, we did our best to cram in as much music as possible, and included birthday tributes to two Bluegrass legends, both of whom were born on August 27th.

The Stanley Brothers with Carter on the guitar.
The first birthday celebrant was the late Carter Stanley, who was born on August 27, 1925.  Though Carter died on December 1, 1966, his legend continues to live on through all of the songs he wrote and his soulful singing voice.  We featured quite a few tunes from the Stanley Brothers most of which were either written or co-written by Carter.  In addition, there were a couple of songs from Bill Monroe & His Blue Grass Boys when Carter was briefly a member of that group in the early 1950s.  We also included a couple of tribute songs from the pen of Tom T. and Dixie Hall about Carter and the Stanley Brothers' impact on the Bluegrass World.

The second birthday celebrant is the one and only J.D. Crowe, who was born on
J.D. Crowe played the 2012 Jenny Brook BG Festival
with the New South (Rickey Wasson in this photo).
August 27, 1937.  Crowe may have retired from his own band (
J.D. Crowe & the New South), but even at age 76, J.D. has not totally retired from Bluegrass.  This year, alone, he's been out working several "special appearance" shows with a reunion of the Bluegrass Album Band, as well as in a special group of Bluegrass all-stars known as the Masters Of Bluegrass.  He's been a tremendous influence on many a banjo picker, and will no doubt, continue to be one for years and years to come.

As we always do, we tried to squeeze in a healthy portion of newer music, too.  This time around, those selections came from the Gibson Brothers, the Spinney BrothersBalsam Range, Dailey & Vincent, Junior Sisk & Ramblers Choice, the Boxcars, the Expedition Show, Jason Davis, Big Country Bluegrass, Don Rigsby, and Ricky Skaggs & Kentucky Thunder.

Be sure to join me once again this coming Sunday for another, full-length Bluegrass Cafe!

Amy

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 8/18/2013

Sunday's radio show was another full one with a few IBMA nominees, Bluegrass birthday tributes to two Country Music Hall of Famers, and some brand spanking-new music, too.

To start things off, we played several tunes featuring the wonderful Paul Warren, who was announced this week as one of two soon-to-be-inducted members of the Bluegrass Hall of Fame.  As Lester Flatt & Earl Scruggs had broken up the Foggy Mountain Boys long before I ever came to truly appreciate Bluegrass music, it was through Warren disciples such as the Johnson Mountain Boys' Eddie Stubbs where I first heard the name of Paul Warren.  Since the old Flatt & Scruggs TV shows mostly from the early 1960s have been issued on DVD in recent years, I've come to fully appreciate the fiddle work of Paul Warren, and I've been able to realize what an incredible spark he provided for the Foggy Mountain Boys.  What an amazing life he lived, and what an incredible legacy of recordings we can still share!

The other Hall of Fame inductee for 2013 is the well-revered Tony Rice, and we played a bit of music from him, too.

As the final nominees for IBMA Awards were announced this past week, we also featured a little bit of music from a few of the nominees for awards this year, including the Spinney Brothers, Balsam Range, Russell Moore & IIIrd Tyme Out, Junior Sisk & Ramblers Choice, and the Gibson Brothers.

In addition to short sets of Bluegrass covers of songs originally recorded by
Country Music Hall of Famers Buck Owens (born August 12, 1929) and Porter Wagoner (born August 12, 1927), we also included a good dosage of brand new Bluegrass music.  The newest of the new came from projects by Terry Baucom, Chris Jones & the Night Drivers, and Lorraine Jordan & Carolina Road, but there was also newer music from the likes of the Tuttles with A.J. Lee, Big Country Bluegrass, Hammertowne, and Joe Mullins & the Radio Ramblers.  We also took a few moments to share a few Bluegrass gospel songs of the Country Gentlemen, as we remembered the one and only Charlie Waller who died on August 18, 2004.

It was a full show, and an enjoyable one from my end of the microphone.  Hope you agree with this assessment.

Have a good week!

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 8/11/2013

While I'm a bit delayed in getting the show playlist for Sunday posted, I'm hoping the old adage of, "Better late than never" will apply here.  It was a big show with birthday celebrations for country and Bluegrass music legends, as well as a Bluegrass tribute to the late Cowboy Jack Clement.

It seemed only fitting to start and end the show in a similar fashion -- with music from the "King Of Bluegrass," Jimmy Martin, who would have celebrated his 86th birthday on August 10th.  Included was music recorded by Jimmy Martin when he worked as a Blue Grass Boy, as well as music he made with his own Sunny Mountain Boys.  We also included a couple of Martin songs recorded by other performers, and two songs written in tribute to Jimmy Martin.

Our other Bluegrass birthday to celebrate was that of New England Bluegrass legend -- and International Bluegrass Music Museum-recognized "Bluegrass Pioneer" -- Sam Tidwell.  Sam's birthday was August 11th, and while he's been gone since the Spring of 2012, he lives on in the hearts of a lot of folks who continue to play Bluegrass music in New England.  We played a couple of songs Sam wrote and recorded with the Kennebec Valley Boys, as well as some of his earliest music he made with his brother, Bob (the Tidwell Brothers & the Cedar Mountain Boys), and a couple of Sam's familiar stories.

We couldn't let the show pass without remembering a country music songwriting legend who died this past week:  Cowboy Jack Clement.  One of the first bands Cowboy Jack played music with was Washington D.C. Bluegrass legend, Buzz Busby & the Bayou Boys, so he wasn't a completely unfamiliar figure in the Bluegrass world.  We featured a couple of Bluegrass covers of Cowboy Jack songs, and threw in an amusing Johnny Cash song written by Clement.

August is a big month for birthdays of country music legends, too, and while we didn't get to play a whole lot of music from two Country Music Hall of Famers born on August 12th -- Porter Wagoner in 1927 and Buck Owens in 1929 -- we did play a couple of Bluegrass covers of music originally recorded by each of these gentlemen.  We'll play a bit more from their respective catalogs during next week's show.

Lou Reid & Carolina - celebrating
20 years with a new live CD!
If all of the birthday celebrating and such wasn't enough, we still found a little bit of time to squeeze in some newer music, some of it brand-new from projects that have not yet been released.  Among the new this week:  music from Jason Davis, Mark Newton & Steve Thomas, the Spinney Brothers, Peter Rowan, the Expedition Show, Big Country Bluegrass, Don Rigsby, Flatt Lonesome, Junior Sisk & Ramblers Choice, the Rosenthals, Reno & Harrell, and Lou Reid & Carolina.

Hope you'll be sure to join us next Sunday for another packed edition of Bluegrass Cafe!

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 8/4/2013

Sunday's show included several birthday tributes to country music stars of the past as well as a to a pair of Canadian brothers who currently doing pretty well for themselves on the various Bluegrass charts.  In the former category, we remembered the birthdays of the late Vern Gosdin (a/k/a "The Voice") who was born August 5, 1934.  Though he died in April 2009 at the age of 74, Gosdin is still regarded as one of the greatest country singers of all time, even though he started his musical life as a Bluegrass singer.  In tribute to Vern Gosdin, we played two Bluegrass songs on which he was featured, plus a tribute song written about him and recorded in recent years.

Another country singer who was born this week in the month of August was the Hall of Famer, Webb Pierce.  Pierce was born on August 8, 1921 (or, 1926, depending on your source), and with his tremendously big personality, keen business sense, flashy Nudie suits, and nasal-ish twang, he had a whole bunch of hit records in the 1950s and very early into the 1960s.  Many of Pierce's songs have been interpreted in the Bluegrass World, too, and we featured several of them on Sunday's show from several performers, including the Gibson Brothers, Rhonda Vincent, the Seldom Scene, Ricky Skaggs, Michael Cleveland & Flamekeeper, the Johnson Mountain Boys, Crowe & McLaughlin, the Sidemen, and Webb Pierce himself.

If you've listened to the Bluegrass Cafe over the last several years, you probably know we've grown very fond of Nova Scotia's Spinney Brothers.  Brothers Allan and Rick have been traveling extensively throughout Canada and the United States since deciding to pursue music full time a couple of years ago.  Their two Mountain Fever Records releases in 2012 and 2013 have produced songs that have reached the top position on both the Bluegrass Unlimited and Bluegrass Today song charts.  While the Spinneys have shared a lot of great musical experiences over the last couple of years, they also share a birthday, as they born one year to the day apart from each other:  Allan on August 5, 1965 and Rick on August 5, 1966.  To celebrate their joint birthdays, we heard a few songs from a couple of different records by the Spinneys.

Matt Nozzolio on Dobro played with the Bristol Boys
at Buttery Brook BG Festival, July 2005
It wasn't all about birthdays, though.  Five years ago this week, Matt Nozzolio, a fine Connecticut Bluegrass musician and veteran of several bands, died suddenly.  We remembered Matt with a few musical selections from his last band, the old country trio known as the Bristol Boys.

As usual, there was a small portion of new-ish music to share on Sunday, too, from performers including Mountain Faith, Volume Five, Big Country Bluegrass, Mickey Galyean & Cullen's Bridge, Shannon & Heather Slaughter & County Clare, Don Rigsby, Sideline, and the Gibson Brothers.

Hope you enjoyed the show, and that you'll consider joining me on the air very soon...

Enjoy the week!

Amy
