"Bluegrass Cafe" Playlist - 9/16/2012

Hi Folks.

What a day!  We had Bob Bond, the promoter of The Last Green Festival, visit by phone, and we had local favorites Nick Anderson and Monty McClanahan visit with us in person in the studio to talk local bluegrass history, upcoming events, and to play several songs with just guitar and mandolin, reminiscent of the Charlie & Bill style.  Monty may be known outside of our listening area by his song, "Walk Away," recorded by Valerie Smith & Liberty Pike.  Of course we played the VS&LP version on this show.
Nick Anderson & Monty McClanahan at WHUS

We played some brand new music on this program, including songs from Darrell Webb, Nu-Blue, The Roys,  The Grass Cats, and Del & Dawg.  Recent music included songs from Audie Blaylock, Bob Amos, Travers Chandler, Nightflyer, Karl Shiflett, Balsam Range, The Earl Brothers, and Eddie & Martha Adcock with Tom Gray.  We called on our Heritage Corner to work all eight sides into the show that Bill Monroe and The Blue Grass Boys recorded on this day 66 years ago with what is now considered the First Bluegrass Band - Monroe, Lester Flatt, Earl Scruggs, Chubby Wise, and Howard Watts (a.k.a. Cedric Rainwater).

Amy and I both will be attending the IBMA World of Bluegrass which will keep us away for the next two shows.  James & Cathy Ward have graciously offered to fill-in for us during our absence.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 9/9/2012

Sixteen years ago today, the BG world lost its father, William Smith Monroe.  As you might expect, we remembered Big Mon today by starting the show off with four songs of the many that have been written in tribute to Monroe in the years since his passing.  We also played a few tunes from Bill Monroe's pen and his recording catalog throughout the show.

In addition to September 9th being the anniversary of Bill Monroe's death, we also celebrated the birthdays of both Paul Adkins (born 9/9/1952) and James King (9/9/1958), as well as those of Bill Monroe (9/13/1911) and Lou Reid (9/13/1954).

There was plenty of music to play from releases recently received or made available to WHUS through downloads by bands like Delta Reign ("Calm Before The Storm" will be released by Mountain Fever Records), as well as the Yankee Rebels ("Flight Of The Phoenix" on their own label), the San Francisco-based Earl Brothers' fifth recording called "Outlaw Hillbilly," "Pick It Brother" from the teen-and-preteen Moore Brothers Band, and the latest from Ricky Skaggs is called "Music To My Ears."  We also had a couple of "singles" released from forthcoming projects by Nu-Blu (their all-gospel "Nail By Nail" is soon to be released on Pinecastle Records) and Joe Mullins & the Radio Ramblers, whose "They're Playing My Song" comes out on Rebel Records on October 25th.  There was plenty of music from 2012 releases, too, by folks like the Special Consensus, Balsam Range, the Boxcars, Jeff Parker, Freeman & Williams, the Spinney Brothers, Tennessee Mafia Jug Band, Richard Bennett, Bob Amos, the Lonesome River Band, and Karl Shiflett & Big Country Show.

Hope you enjoyed something you heard at some point on Sunday's show.  Be sure to join Jim next Sunday for another addition of Bluegrass Cafe.  Remember, too, that you're cordially invited to visit our Facebook page anytime and give it a "like," if you're so inclined.  There, you'll find information on various BG happenings in the area, and those pesky sports preemptions and things that might cause slight modifications to our programming at WHUS.  Find us on Facebook by clicking here:  www.facebook.com/WHUS.BluegrassCafe.

Enjoy the week!

"Bluegrass Cafe" Playlist - 9/2/2012

Hi Folks.

We had the pleasure of hosting local bluegrass musician Monty McClanahan for a good portion of the show this Labor Day Sunday.  Monty was here to tell us about a great three-day music festival coming up at the end of September in Brooklyn, Connecticut, called The Last Green Festival.  There is an amazing and varied list of musicians performing at this event, including Ricky Skaggs, The New Riders of the Purple Sage, and local favorites Nick Anderson & Shady Creek.  Monty plays mandolin with the latter.  Monty also provided three tickets that we gave away on the show to a couple of lucky callers.

While Monty was visiting, he played us a couple of his own songs using his new Martin D-18 Golden Era guitar, and we played several more from an album he released back in 1998 titled "The Road Less Traveled" as well as a Nick Anderson & Shady Creek song that Nick wrote and on which Monty picked mandolin and sang harmony.  Monty stuck around for a while and helped pick the playlist for a good portion of the next hour, too.  Listener response was great, and we hope to do more of this kind of in-studio performance in the future.

Our homage to Labor Day was "Workin' End Of A Hoe" by Larry Cordle.  Much of the rest of the show was 2012 releases from Balsam Range, Larry Stephenson, The Earl Brothers, Audie Blaylock, Bob Amos, The Grascals, Travers Chandler & Avery County, The Lonesome River Band, Jeff Parker, Richard Bennett, Rhonda Vincent, Karl Shiflett, Mickey Boles, Larry Gillis, and regional band Monadnock.

The Heritage Corner (my name for pioneering bluegrass music on the show) included songs from The Stanley Brothers (1956), J.D. Crowe (1968), Delia Bell & Bill Grant, early Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver (soon to be in the IBMA Hall of Fame), Carl Story, and rare Lilly Brothers & Don Stover live in Japan (1973).

Be sure to tune in next week when Amy will make the banjos and fiddles ring.

Another mixed-up fill-in -- 8/31/2012

As it does three times a year, the schedule has changed again at WHUS.  While the majority of the schedule is filled (the new schedule can be seen here), but there are still a couple of blocks marked, "TBA."  I'm sure the permanent fill-ins for the semester will be determined soon, but in the meantime, I found myself once again on Friday morning doing a bit of a fill-in radio show from 9:00-11:00AM.  As you probably know, when I do these fill-ins I really like to mix up the music a bit by playing a healthy portion of what I like to describe as classic country music with the Bluegrass.  Today's show was really no exception, but, as always, I enjoyed mixing things up on the airwaves.

It's Labor Day weekend, and so, the proverbial "no-brainer" found me playing a number of tunes either with the word "work" in the title, or with "work" as the subject of the song.  The singers of these songs ranged from the First Family of Country Music -- the Carter Family to the Monroe Brothers to Joe Mullins & the Radio Ramblers, to name just a few.  It would have been quite impossible to play country work-themed songs without playing Merle Haggard's 1969 classic, "Workin' Man Blues."  Fortunately, I was able to find an LP in the WHUS music library with that song, as I had completely forgotten to bring a CD with the song to the station this morning.

Wrap yourself up in George Jones -- this throw available
at www.GeorgeJones.com
The rest of the show included a bunch of great cowboy songs, several duet records, various other favorites, and music from the one and only George Jones.  It seems like the man formerly known as "No-Show Jones" is a great inspiration for countless BG and country singers, and today, I just had a hankering to hear some of his classic tunes.  After 50+ years of touring, George Jones has recently announced that in 2013, he will have his final "Grand Tour," so his fans will only have so many more chances to see him live.  As astute listener called in today to remind me that the George Jones Tour was appearing this very night -- Friday, August 31st -- at the Calvin Theatre in not-too-far-away Northampton, MA.  Maybe someone in the listening area got a chance to go see George?  I sure hope that's true...

Hope everyone has a pleasant remainder of the Labor Day weekend.  Be sure to join Jim once again on Sunday afternoon from 4-7PM for another edition of the "Bluegrass Cafe."
