"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 3/22/2009 RADIOTHON WEEK #2

Well....it's over, and once again, we're completely AMAZED!! All of you helped us to reach our station-set 2-week goal of $2,900, and for that, we are extremely grateful! Thanks so much!!

(If you're curious, the dollar amount we raised during our two weeks of Radiothon helped us retain the "crown" of #1 Listener-Supported Music Program at WHUS. While this won't get us a better parking spot or more hours on the air, it's always fun for us to know that our listeners enjoy what they're hearing so much!)

The majority of the music we played was from CDs that were available for pledges during Radiothon. While we still had a pretty decent selection of available titles during Week #2, Jim & I both took the opportunity to raid our own collections at home and each of us found a couple of duplicates we could share as premiums. That was a lot of fun, and we sincerely hope you enjoy whatever CDs and goodies you receive as thank-you gifts for your pledges.

Please note that if you made a pledge for a copy of the not-yet-released Dailey & Vincent CD called "Brothers From Different Mothers" -- and about 20 of you did -- those CDs have to be special ordered from Rounder by our Business Manager at WHUS. Please allow a bit of extra time to receive those premiums, and your patience is much appreciated.

Thanks again to all of the record labels and performers for donating their CDs to us to use for Radiothon, and an extra special thanks to yesterday's phone operators: Clyde, Scott, Marti, and new WHUS show host, Aaron Price.

Jim & Marti join you in the Cafe next Sunday. Expect to hear lots of music and not-so-much talk on the airwaves.

Thanks again!!!!

Radiothon Week #2 is a "go"...

Although our annual fundraising campaign at WHUS -- Radiothon -- lasts from March 14-22, there was a bit of concern last week that this Sunday's BG Cafe edition of Radiothon might be preempted for UCONN Basketball. It turns out that Sunday's game for the UCONN Women takes place at noon, so that means there's no preemption for us! In short, we still have 3 hours to reach our station-set goal, and would really appreciate it if you can help us get there. No dollar amount gift is too small -- whatever you can donate to support our program (and WHUS as a whole) is much appreciated.

To thank you for your pledge, we still have a good number of great BG CDs and lots of fine WHUS goodies (organic t-shirts, hoodies, coffee mugs, reusable shopping bags, etc.). In addition, Jim & Marti return to to the Cafe this week, and Jim has a selection of CD offerings from his very own collection! Tune in Sunday to see what sorts of surprises are in store.....

We hope to hear from you this Sunday, 4-7PM. Operators will be standing by, and the call is on us: 1-800-599-9487.

Thanks!!

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 3/15/2009 -- RADIOTHON WEEK #1

Whew! We survived our first week of Radiothon 2009 on Sunday's show -- hope you did, too. I know that it can be frustrating to hear so little music on the air during Radiothon, but we appreciate your support and, of course, patience. As you may have heard or read, the station's goal this year is to raise $25,000 between now and March 22nd in order to actually complete our music library. Any help you can give us in any dollar amount is greatly appreciated.

Special thanks to everyone who made a pledge to the BG Cafe on March 15th! In our three hours, we had close to 40 donors and raised just under $1,500 to put toward the station's overall weekly goal, so we're quite pleased. There would be no point for us to even have a BG Cafe if we didn't have some great (and generous!) listeners every week. Thanks!!

If you haven't yet had an opportunity to make a pledge to WHUS and/or the BG Cafe, you'll probably have another chance on Sunday, March 22nd. At this point, we're unsure of what time the UCONN Women's Basketball team will be playing in the NCAA tournament, but we'll know more after tonight. There's always a chance that the BG show will be preempted for basketball, but we'll let you know for sure as soon as we know.

We missed the vacationing Jim & Marti yesterday, but they'll be back in studio with us next Sunday. Thanks to Dave Murray for helping out yesterday, as well as our fine phone operators: my mother, Eleanor, Clyde Proch, & Scott Farrar. We hope you'll join us once more next Sunday.

Thanks again!!

Amy

It's that time again....

Radiothon!

As you've probably gleaned by now, our annual fundraising campaign at WHUS starts tomorrow, March 14th and runs through the following Sunday, March 22nd. Once again, we are calling upon the most wonderful WHUS listeners -- those who listen to "BG Cafe," of course -- to help us support the many costs associated with broadcasting at WHUS. Yes, we know these are not the greatest of financial times, but if you can help us out with a donation, we'll be extremely grateful. This year, the monies raised during Radiothon are being used to actually finish our music library. To read more about the library and its current state, click here.

Those of you who made pledges to WHUS last year have likely received in the past week a letter asking for donations. On the air last week, I suggested that you wait until our actual Radiothon to make a donation, as we have accumulated a dandy list of CDs to offer as "thank you gifts" for your pledge. While I won't list everything we have available, here's a sampling:

  • Balsam Range - "Last Train To Kitty Hawk"
  • Hunter Berry - "Wow Baby"
  • Audie Blaylock & Redline - "Audie Blaylock & Redline"
  • Dale Ann Bradley - "Catch Tomorrow"
  • Michael Cleveland & Flamekeeper - "Leavin' Town"
  • Daughters Of Bluegrass - "Bluegrass Bouquet"
  • Gibson Brothers - "Iron & Diamonds"
  • Rick Hayes - "Fly By Night"
  • Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver - "Help Is On The Way"
  • David Peterson - "Comin' On Strong"
  • Seldom Scene - "SCENEchronized"
  • Cody Shuler & Pine Mountain Railroad - "Pickin', Praisin' & Singin'"
  • Junior Sisk & Ramblers Choice - "Blue Side Of The Blue Ridge"
  • Steep Canyon Rangers - "Lovin' Pretty Women"
  • Dan Tyminski - "Wheels"
  • Doc Watson - "Best Of The Sugar Hill Years"

In addition, the fine folks at Rounder are allowing us to take pledges for the not-yet-released recording from Dailey & Vincent called "Brothers From Different Mothers." Special thanks to the the following labels and performers for donating CDs to us: Blue Circle Records, Compass Records, Rick Hayes, Mountain Home, David Peterson, Rebel, Rounder, Rural Rhythm, and Sugar Hill Records.

Generally, Radiothon lasts two weeks at WHUS, but at this point, we are unsure of whether or not the March 22nd show will be preempted for NCAA basketball tournament(s). So....this Sunday, March 15th, you'll have your best opportunity to make your pledge and help us out. Please do it, if you can.

THANKS!!!!

UPDATE -- 3/14/2009 -- Information about Radiothon has been updated on the WHUS website. Included on that site is a complete list of what we have available for BG CDs for Radiothon. We hope you'll consider calling us on Sunday between 4PM & 7PM and make a pledge, if you can. Any amount is much appreciated, and the call is on us: 1-800-599-WHUS (9487). Thanks!

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 3/8/2009

We capped off a most-excellent weather weekend in eastern CT -- temperatures in the 60s! -- with three hours of the best in Bluegrass. Hope you enjoyed something you heard somewhere along the way...

If you had a chance to listen to the show, I'm sure you heard that Radiothon is fast approaching at WHUS. The official dates of Radiothon are Saturday, March 14th through Sunday, March 22nd. So....that means we'll have at least one chance (and possibly two, depending on how well the Men's & Women's Basketball teams do in their various tournaments) to make some money to support the programming at WHUS. Last year, the Bluegrass programming at WHUS became the #1 listener-supported music show, and while we would absolutely LOVE to retain that "title," we realize that with the state of the economy, we just can't be overly confident. If you can help us out by supporting the BG Cafe (and, in turn, WHUS) during Radiothon, we will be extremely grateful. A bonus is that we've been accumulating some dandy Bluegrass CDs to offer as thank-you gifts for your pledge (in addition to our usual WHUS shirts, coffee cups, etc., etc.). In our playlist below, we've highlighted just a few of those CDs we'll have for premiums in GREEN.

On Sunday, we also put a few folks in the spotlight who either celebrated or would have celebrated a birthday over the past two weeks, including Doug Dillard, Rickie Simpkins, Marshall Wilborn, Bob Paisley, John Duffey, and Doc Watson.

We hope you'll consider making a pledge to WHUS next week during Radiothon, but if not, please tune in, anyway! Thanks!

Amy

"Bluegrass Cafe" Playlist - 3/1/2009

I can't recall when I had more fun hosting Bluegrass Cafe. This was essentially the first time I had not had to do five hours of radio on the same day I did this show. When Marti and I were doing Red Rooster Party, that show took many hours to plan and produce leaving little time remaining for Bluegrass Cafe. I knew I was leaving a lot of interesting material on the shelves because I just didn't have time to dig it out.

Now that Marti and I have all the time we need to prepare for Bluegrass Cafe, I am able to mine my extensive collection with emphasis on the old LPs that have not yet (and may never be) reissued on CD. This show was the first in which I brought a handful of LPs to the studio to share with all of you, and I didn't even get to all of them. The result was a mix of classic and new music that absolutely thrilled me to put on the air.

We had a couple of mini-features through the show, the first of which was a set of songs written by Stan Keach, a New Hampshire native who lives in Maine. It is always a pleasure to see New England artists who really "get" this music do well, and Stan is making quite a name for himself with songs recorded by Danny Paisley, Audie Blaylock, The Gillis Brothers, Special Consensus, and others. We played three of Stan's songs performed by the first three (highlighted in green below). Afterwards we were treated to a call from Stan. It seems someone listening to the show gave Stan a call when we were playing his songs, and he tuned in over the Web, and called us to say "hi." (I love this "job".) Be sure to check out a feature on Stan in the March/April issue of Bluegrass Music Profiles.

Also, by popular demand, we played a long set of train songs -- some old and some new. That was fun, and it must have struck a nerve because before we finished we had callers suggesting more.

Some of the LPs we played were oldies from Dave Evans, The Johnson Mountain Boys (note to Rounder: when are you going to release all of their LPs on CD???), Fred Pike & Sam Tidwell, and Charlie Moore. I've indicated these by putting (LP) next to the album titles below.

I also have to mention the gospel set at the end of the show. I focused a bit more than usual on a cappella songs of the type Ralph Stanley brought into bluegrass, starting with one of the first he recorded in that style. We are fortunate to have many artists doing great a cappella numbers these days, and I picked new ones from Cody Shuler & Pine Mountain Railroad and their excellent gospel release, and one from Dry Branch Fire Squad's newest CD to round out our more classic material. The Gibson Brothers fit in there quite well, too.

Amy will be with you next week, so be sure to tune in for more of the best in bluegrass as she makes the banjos and fiddles ring.

Jim
