"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 7/28/2019

We are a touch late in posting the list for Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe, but better late than never...

Inspired by the reading of a "graphic novel" biography of the Carter Family, a full 75% of the songs presented during the program were Bluegrass versions of songs originally recorded by the Carter Family.  On August 1, 1927, A.P. Carter with his wife, Sara, and her cousin, Maybelle (who also happened to be A.P.'s sister-in-law) made their first recordings as a group in Bristol, Tennessee/Virginia, and the music world has never been the same.  A.P. was an occasional songwriter, but he is mainly known as being a "song catcher," and there's no doubt that many of the songs he "caught" have become Bluegrass standards.  The Carter Family has been honored with memberships in both the Country Music Hall of Fame, as well as the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame, and there is no doubt that their music will be heard and performed for as long as traditional music is played.

We also briefly mentioned the three newest members of the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame, who will be inducted in September 2019:  Mike Auldridge, Bill Emerson, and the Kentucky Colonels.

Hope you were able to tune in to the show on Sunday, but if not, we'll be back with you again once more next Sunday afternoon, 4-7PM.

Have a great week!

Amy O.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 7/21/2019

With temperatures nearing 100 degrees over the last couple of days, it seemed smart to open up Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe with nearly a dozen-and-a-half "cold" songs.  Not sure if and of these tunes cooled anyone off, but it was fun to try.  :)

This was a big week for new music.  We included selections from recently or soon-to-be-released recordings by Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, Jason Barie, Hammertowne, Claybank, Michael Cleveland, and Ralph Stanley II & the Clinch Mountain Boys.

Birthdays for July 21st were celebrated, as well.  We remembered Sara Carter (born July 21, 1898) with three Carter Family classics, as well as Bluegrass Hall of Famer, Bobby Hicks (born July 21, 1933).

Hope you were able to tune in for Sunday's show, but if not, you'll get another chance next Sunday afternoon, 4-7PM.

Enjoy the week!

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 7/14/2019

Happy 90th Birthday, Jesse McReynolds!
Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe featured a whole bunch of birthday celebrants, and at the top of the list was a living legend and member of the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame:  Jesse McReynolds (born July 9, 1929).  Among the other folks who celebrated birthdays that we celebrated this week:  Rhonda Vincent, Mike Barber (a/k/a "The Third Gibson Brother"), Ricky Skaggs, Wayne Taylor, and banjo picker Richard Underwood who worked for many years with the Johnson Mountain Boys.  Happy Birthday wishes to all!

July 9th also marked the day of passing for an important midwest member of the Bluegrass community:  Bill Grant.  With the late Delia Bell, Grant made some fabulous recordings over the years, and we shared a couple of them on Sunday.

There was a bit of newer music to share during the program, too, with selections from the Seldom Scene, Dede Wyland, Carolina Blue, and Big Country Bluegrass, as well as a brand-new recording from resophonic guitar man, Roger Williams.

Hope you enjoyed the show, and you are cordially invited to join me once again next Sunday from 4-7PM for another edition of our Bluegrass Cafe.

Have a good week!

Amy O.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 7/7/2019

Ira & Charlie -- the greatest brother duo, ever
Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe featured music from several early July birthday celebrants, as well as several songs commemorating the 156th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg (July 1-3, 1865).  Our main focus on Sunday, though, was the birthday anniversary of Charlie Louvin (born July 7, 1927).  To that end, we shared nearly 30 songs which were either performed by the Louvin Brothers or written by the brothers, themselves.  We really don't need to have an "excuse" to play so many Bluegrass versions of songs from the Louvin Brothers' vast song catalog, but with Charlie's birth anniversary today, how could we possibly resist?  We didn't even bother trying...  :)

Hope you have had a wonderful long holiday weekend, and that you'll be sure to join us once again next Sunday afternoon, 4-7PM.

Have a great week!

Amy O.
