IBMM featured in American Profile

In the June 3-9 edition of American Profile (a newspaper magazine-type supplement from the Publishing Group of America, and included in some newspapers across the country), there was a feature article on the International Bluegrass Music Museum (or, IBMM) in Owensboro, Kentucky. I've not visited there -- yet -- but I'm hopeful this very state-of-the-art type of museum will be a future destination for me. It's not every day that Bluegrass music is included in the mainstream press, so do visit this link, if you're so inclined:

http://www.americanprofile.com/article/22232.html

A Connecticut connection to the IBMM.....former CT resident (as well as former GrassRoutes banjo player & sometime WWUH Bluegrass DJ) Steve Brechter was once the Chair of the IBMM Board of Trustees.

Upcoming show at the Main Pub...

I know this show isn't happening for a few more weeks, but wanted to pass the word while the news is fresh....

The Greencards will return to Connecticut when they visit the Main Pub in Manchester on Thursday, August 9th. Showtime is 8PM. While this group can't exactly be categorized as 100% Monroe-style Bluegrass, they are young and energetic, and I've only heard good comments about them from those who've seen the group perform. Check 'em out, if you're so inclined.

For more information on the Greencards, visit their website. If you need more information about the Main Pub (which has been featuring a good bit of Bluegrass over the past year or so), click here.

Mineral Springs "Foot Stompin' Festival" - June 29-30 & July 1

Mineral Springs Family Campground in Stafford Springs, CT will hold their annual "July 4th" Bluegrass festival this weekend. The lineup features a number of very fine regional bands, including GrassRoutes, FreeWheelin', TrueGrass, Southern Rail, Acoustic Blue, Second Circle, Gail Wade & Turning Point, Redstone Ridge, and -- appearing Friday night only -- Girl Howdy. The music begins at 8PM on Friday night and continues through Sunday afternoon about 2PM. To view the festival flyer, click here, or, if you'd like information on the campground itself (i.e. directions), click here.

The 90 degree temps. should be gone, and I've only heard good forecasts for this weekend. Hope to see you there!

Bad weather does not mean bad festival....

Well, the weather was decidedly NOT perfect at last weekend's Jenny Brook Bluegrass Festival in Weston, VT, but when all is said and done, that just didn't matter all that much. Hosts Candi & Seth Sawyer still put together a very good lineup, and the crowd always seemed pretty large and enthusiastic, so who can complain?

Of course, the performers were top-notch, from the two big days of unofficial "host band," the Gibson Brothers to the super-traditional sounds of road demons, David Davis & the Warrior River Boys, as well as Long Island's Buddy Merriam & Back Roads, and the inspiring Lynn Morris Band. In the not-quite-Bluegrass category, there were great performances from Northeast favorite, Smokey Greene, as well as Beartracks -- a group from the Plattsburgh, NY area featuring Dobro master Junior Barber, and his very talented cousins, Tom Venne and Julie Venne Hogan. And let's not forget the real hosts, the Seth Sawyer Band. Another big highlight was Saturday afternoon's set featuring the Gibsons' younger sister, Erin Gibson LaClair, in her very own front-and-center set of music (backed by a pretty fine band consisting of her brothers & longtime Gibson bass player, Mike Barber). Top notch.

You may recall that Lynn Morris suffered a stroke four years ago, and has had a difficult time getting back into the music. Lynn seems to have a hard time remembering lyrics, and while her voice isn't quite as strong as it once was, you've got to be impressed and inspired to see her performance. May she continue on her road to recovery.

If you didn't get a chance to make it to this year's festival, you missed a good one. I did see a good number of folks from Connecticut there -- maybe you can make it next year....

Festival volunteer Ted Lehmann has posted a very nice write-up of the weekend's activities on his own blog. If you'd like to read it, click here.

Be sure to drop Candi a note if you made it to Jenny Brook. I'm sure she'd love to hear from you.

Another stop on the Bear Bridge "Tour 2007"...

Folks -

I'd be remiss if I didn't make mention of a show happening this Saturday, June 30th at the Peru Community Center, Route 143, Peru, MA. The Bear Bridge Band makes their third appearance for 2007, starting off at 5:30PM. Peru is one of those teeny western Massachusetts towns -- and I do mean teeny -- but seeing and hearing this band who doesn't play out too often just might be worth your trip. If you'd like to learn more about the show, call (413)499-9968 or send email to davjengab@metrocast.net. There is also a chicken BBQ happening prior to the show, so check that out, as well, if you can.

Also be aware that earlier in the day, one-half of Bear Bridge -- specifically, Dave Shaw & my brother, Dave "Tex" Orlomoski (seen here playing with the Seth Sawyer Band at the Jenny Brook BG Festival on 6/23/2007) -- will be live in the studio at Dave Helman's Country Corner radio show on WTCC, 90.7FM. Unfortuntely, the other half of Bear Bridge -- Robert & Lillian Fraker -- can't make the radio show, but the Daves can be quite entertaining, I'm sure. Check 'em out, if you can. WTCC broadcasts from the campus of Springfield Community Technical College in Springfield, MA, and also streams its audio online at http://www.wtccfm.org/. Dave Helman's show begins at 1PM -- the other Daves should join him for a few tunes beginning about 1:30PM.

"Bluegrass Cafe" Playlist 6/24/2007

Greetings Folks!

Marti and I certainly enjoyed serving up the bluegrass music this past Sunday! We again mixed the old with the new, and had a mini-feature recognizing the music of Boudleaux and Felice Bryant as performed by the Osborne Brothers (Monday, 25 June, marks the 20th year since Boudleaux's passing). We also introduced a local group called "Pine Creek Bluegrass" with a song recorded live at Sterling Park a couple of weeks earlier. Other new music came from Cherryholmes, Honi Deaton, Grasstowne, Larry Sparks, Randy Kohrs, Steep Canyon Rangers, Lorraine Jordan, Hunter Berry, and the fine Scott Family Band.

Marti and I are off to collect more music, interviews, and stories from North Carolina next week. Amy will take care of the Bluegrass Cafe as well as the Red Rooster Party where she is known to spin some great classic country music when she makes an appearance. Tune in!

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 6/17/2007

The Father's Day edition of Bluegrass Cafe started off with some tunes from the Father of Bluegrass (naturally). We also included a number of tunes by groups which featured fathers and sons as members -- those families included such names as McCoury, Parmley, Mullins, Osborne, Sparks, and Paisley, but could have easily included many, many more. We'll save those for another show. Of course, we also were able to sneak in a few tunes with fatherly themes, as well. Hope all the fathers out there had a terrific day....

In addition, new music from the projects by Hunter Berry ("Wow Baby") and Grasstowne ("The Road Headin' Home) was included, as were several requests. Those are noted in red.

Our celebration of 25 Bluegrass-filled years at WHUS continued, too, with us giving away 3 more CDs. If you didn't win, don't despair -- Jim & Marti have 3 more copies to give away next week.

I'm off to Weston, Vermont's Jenny Brook Bluegrass Festival on June 22nd -- hope to see you there! If you can't be there, I'll see you back at the Cafe on July 1st.

"Bluegrass Cafe" Playlist - 6/10/07

Hi Folks!

Marti and I featured Steep Canyon Rangers this week following their performance at Strawberry Park a week earlier. We also featured The Gibson Brothers by popular demand. They too performed at Strawberry Park. (I have never received so many requests for a single group during one show, and I didn't even get to all the requests for the Gibsons). As usual, I featured a good bit of new music (including the new Cherryholmes) along with a good dose of the old.

We also continued the June celebration of 25 Years of Bluegrass Music on WHUS Radio by giving away a CD every hour of the show. CDs won by listeners this week were by Randy Kohrs, Dwight McCall, and Larry Sparks -- all their latest efforts. Hope you enjoyed.

Amy will be with you next Sunday.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 6/3/2007

Over the past couple of weeks, we've received quite a few new CDs from all kinds of Bluegrass performers. Sunday's show featured quite a few of those new tunes -- hope you liked them. Some of the performers with new music included veterans like Dry Branch Fire Squad, Honi Deaton & Dream, Curly Seckler, the Steep Canyon Rangers, John Reischman & the Jaybirds, Red Henry, Ron Block, and new performers Tommy Webb, and a group called Avery County. We also included a tune from the new project called "Lifetimes" by Little Roy Lewis, Earl Scruggs, & Lizzy Long.

In addition, we gave away copies of the new CDs from Lorraine Jordan & Carolina ("Carolina Road"), Randy Kohrs ("Old Photograph"), and Larry Sparks ("The Last Suit You Wear"). We've sort of designated this month as a "Giveaway Month," as Jim and I will have at least 3 more CDs to give away during each show in June. Listen, call in, and (maybe) win. Of course, you've heard us say that 2007 marks 25 years of BG broadcasting at WHUS, so throughout the year, we'll try to do a few special things to celebrate.

Jim's back next week from his MC duties at Strawberry Park. Join him and Marti on Sunday.
