"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 1/26/2020

As our Bluegrass Cafe was airing on Sunday afternoon, the Grammy Award for "Best Bluegrass Album" was being presented in Los Angeles during their pre-broadcast ceremonies.  We began the show with selections from each of the "Best Bluegrass Album" nominated recordings by Michael Cleveland, Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, Missy Raines, Frank Solivan & Dirty Kitchen, and the Po' Ramblin' Boys -- and made sure to throw in a few extra songs from the winning record:  "Tall Fiddler" by Michael Cleveland.

Sunday was also a day to debut a brand-new song from a brand-new band of familiar faces:  Fast Track.  We look forward to hearing more from them later this year.  Another fine new recording received this week was from Shannon Slaughter, and so, we shared a couple of selections from that.  And there was a new CD single by the Burnett Sisters Band.

Please consider joining us once again this coming Sunday, 4-7PM.

Until then, have a good week!

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 1/19/2020

Apparently, January 19th is a great day for a birthday if you want to be a top-notch singer, as we celebrated a few birthday celebrants during Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe, including Jimmy Haley and Phil Everly, and, of course, two folks who are super-important to the World of Bluegrass:  Charlie Waller and Dolly Parton

A 1955 photo of Buzz Busby & the Bayou Boys (Charlie Waller
at right) featured in the book, Cradle Of The Stars:  KWKH &
the Louisiana Hayride
by Joey Kent (Pelican Publishing, 2019).

Bluegrass Hall of Fame member Charlie Waller was born January 19, 1935 and died August 18, 2004.  Before becoming one of the founding members of the legendary Country Gentlemen, Charlie was a sideman with Buzz Busby & the Bayou Boys on the Louisiana Hayride (KWKH) in Shreveport.  It was with the 1957 formation of the Country Gents, though, that Charlie Waller cemented his future as a superb vocalist and guitar picker, and his 47 years with the band were the most of any member.  In truth, we could have shared the music of the Country Gentlemen and Charlie Waller for the full three-hour program, but we did pick out quite a few selections to share.

Country Music Hall of Famer Dolly Parton is a star of many things, and she has even recorded a Bluegrass-flavored album or two.  In celebrating her birthday (born January 19, 1946), we included a whole bunch of songs written by Dolly down through the years, as there have been many of her songs covered in the Bluegrass world.

There wasn't any brand-new music to share on Sunday, but we did include a few newer selections from recordings by Jason Barie, the Po' Ramblin' Boys, Donna Ulisse, Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, and the South Carolina Broadcasters.

Enjoy the week, and we'll look forward to visiting you again next Sunday afternoon, 4-7PM.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 1/12/2020

During Sunday's unseasonably warm January day (60+ degrees!), it seemed appropriate to start off our Bluegrass CafĂ© with a song about summer.  That the song was written by prolific songwriter Randall Hylton (born January 8, 1945) happened to inspire the playing of several other Hylton-penned tunes -- all dandies.  It seemed a good way to start off the program -- hope you enjoyed it!

We also celebrated the birth anniversary of a Country Music Hall of Famer who never recorded a Bluegrass song, but who has definitely had songs from his vast songbook get covered by Bluegrass performers many, many times.  Ray Price was born on January 12, 1926, so why not celebrate with Ray Price covers by the Nashville Bluegrass Band, Jim & Jesse, IIIrd Tyme Out, the Johnson Mountain Boys, Union Springs, and Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver?

There wasn't much in the way of new music to share this week, but we did share a couple of songs from a CD single of new music to come in 2020 from Dale Ann Bradley & Tina Adair, Steve Thomas & the Time Machine, and Remington Ryde.

Hope you enjoyed the show -- and the beautiful day! -- and we will look for you again next Sunday afternoon, 4-7PM.

Enjoy the week!

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 1/5/2020

Happy New Year!  Our first Bluegrass Cafe of 2020 was spent listening to a few more fine recordings from 2019, remembering the "Voice With A Heart" (Mac Wiseman), and celebrating the 94th birth anniversary of a Bluegrass legend.  Hope you were able to join us for part or all of the show.

While we spent the majority of our December 29th broadcast sharing music from 2019 projects, after the show, we thought of several recordings that had inadvertently been skipped.  To that end, we played several more 2019 selections on Sunday, including music from Chris Jones & the Night Drivers, the Hot Flashes, the Garrett Newton Band, Nothin' Fancy, Edgar Loudermilk Band, the Cadleys, Johnny & Jeanette Williams, Louisa Branscomb, Jesse McReynolds, the Lonesome River Band, Alan Bibey & Grasstowne, Ralph Stanley II & the Clinch Mountain Boys, and a few others.

January 6th marks the 94th birth anniversary of a true legend:  Bluegrass & Country Music Hall of Famer Earl Scruggs.  We shared several songs spanning several years in this banjo innovator's career.  The music and life of this legend are so intriguing that there is even a new book recently published about one specific instrumental tune he wrote and recorded in 1949, "Foggy Mountain Breakdown.  This book is in my "to be read" pile for 2020.  Perhaps you might like to check it out, too?

Have a great week, thanks for listening, and we'll see you next Sunday!

Amy O.
