"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 3/26/2017

Between sports-shortened (or totally preempted) radio shows and vacation time for me, I haven't spent much time in our Bluegrass Cafe this month.  On Sunday, though, we had a full three-hour block of time to play some music, and I tried to take advantage of the situation.
In 2005, a Jenny Brook reunion of the Gibson Brothers
with Junior Barber on Dobro.

Junior at the 2011 Jenny Brook with cousins Julie & Tom in
BearTracks.

As I don't think I've been on the air since the passing of Junior Barber on March 8th, it seemed very fitting to share a good bit of Junior's wonderful sound on records he made with the Gibson Brothers, on his own, and with his most-recent group, BearTracks.  Junior was an amazing musician and a super-nice man, and he will be greatly missed.

In addition to a whole bunch of classic Bluegrass, we also heard some newer music on Sunday from the likes of Junior Sisk & Ramblers Choice, Doyle Lawson & Paul Williams, Big Country Bluegrass, Karl Shiflett & Big Country Show, the Gibson Brothers, and Flashback.

For our closing theme this week, we shared a number by Buddy Pendleton, a southwest Virginia fiddler who died on March 24th at the age of 81.

Big thanks to Cathy Day for sitting in for the show on March 19th.

Hope you can join us for another sports-shortened show this coming Sunday (April 2nd), as we know we might start a bit late due to a UConn Baseball broadcast which is supposed to end at 4PM, and the show will be cut short at 6PM for UConn Women's Basketball in the Final 4.  We appreciate your patience, and hope you can still join us for whatever portion of Bluegrass Cafe will remain on Sunday.  See you then!

Enjoy the week!

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 3/5/2016

"New" music from 1963 is
on the way from Eddie Adcock
It's March, and that means basketball tournament time for the University of Connecticut's basketball teams.  While a 5PM scheduled game for the Women's Basketball team caused Sunday's show to be abbreviated to just sixty minutes, we tried to squeeze in as much music as possible in that short time...and I think we accomplished our goal.

While the show was shortened, new music still played a big part in our programming, as we included new music from recent or forthcoming projects by Big Country Bluegrass, the Gibson Brothers, Doyle Lawson & Paul WilliamsJunior Sisk & Ramblers Choice, the new autobiographical project by and about Mac Wiseman, and a track from a "lost" recording from 1963 featuring banjo legend (and Bluegrass Hall of Famer), Eddie Adcock.  There was also a track from a new Larry Sparks (another Bluegrass Hall of Famer) compilation from Rebel Records.

In addition, we gave away a couple of tickets to an upcoming show in our area featuring the Feinberg Brothers that is being held as a fundraising show for the non-profit Canterbury Historical Society.  More information on that show is here.

Hope you enjoyed today's "express edition"
of our show.  We'll be looking for you next week...

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 2/26/2017

While I am a bit tardy in posting the playlist from Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe, it's never too late to share...

Looking back, it seems like nearly half of the songs we played were in tribute to one of three music legends who would have celebrated birthdays during the preceding week.  None of these birthday celebrants are still with us, but what would the music world be like without the many songwriting, singing, and musician talents of Don Reno (born February 21, 1926), Ralph Stanley (born February 25, 1927), and Johnny Cash (born February 26, 1932)?  It's too unpleasant to even consider that answer, isn't it?

Besides songs from the catalogs of Reno, Stanley, and Cash, we also heard a few songs from late 2016 and 2017 recordings, including music from the Price Sisters, Michael Cleveland, the Po' Ramblin' Boys, Jeff White, Corrina Rose Logston, the Gibson Brothers, and a new compilation from the Bluegrass Patriots.

It looks like this coming Sunday's show will be an abbreviated one, as there is a Women's Basketball game to be broadcast from 5-7PM.  We'll pack as much music as possible into our 4PM hour, though, so sure hope you can join us!

We'll be looking for you then!
