"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 5/26/2019

Sunday's show got a delayed start as the UConn Baseball team was losing their tournament game, so the show went on the air sometime around 22 minutes past the hour.  No big deal, though, as we still tried to squeeze in a whole lot of fine music...and I think we succeeded!

It's Memorial Day weekend, and that means that we spent a good half-hour sharing songs of soldiers who gave their lives in the service of this country.

We also enjoyed a little bit of newer music, which was released within the last year or so.  Among these selections was music from Carolina Blue, the Feinberg Brothers, Danny Paisley & the Southern Grass, High Fidelity, Connecticut's own Grass Routes, Joe Mullins & the Radio Ramblers, and Balsam Range.  In addition, there was brand-new music from projects by the Lonesome River Band, Tom Mindte, Mason Via, & Ben Somerville, the Edgar Loudermilk Band featuring Jeff Autry, the All Stars Of Bluegrass, and a gospel project from Alan Bibey & Grasstowne.

Even though we didn't get to celebrate the 83rd birthday of Country & Bluegrass Music Hall of Famer Tom T. Hall (born May 25, 1936) quite as thoroughly as we had intended, we still shared a few numbers written and/or performed by the Storyteller.  Perhaps the Tom T. celebration will continue next Sunday...

And don't forget our upcoming Jenny Brook Giveaway drawing:  we will be drawing one winner for a 6-day pass to next month's Jenny Brook Bluegrass Festival (Tunbridge, VT -- June 25-30, 2019) during the show next Sunday, June 2nd.  To enter the contest, just send us an email:  bgcafe@gmail.com OR comment on the Jenny Brook post on our Facebook page (www.facebook.com/WHUS.BluegrassCafe).  Pretty easy, huh?  Don't delay -- enter today!

Enjoy the week!

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 5/19/2019

We've had a slight delay in sharing our playlist from Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe, but better late than never...

Sunday's show was the first for our "Summer" season at WHUS.  To that end, in addition to sharing a few selections that were released in 2019, we also included a few songs featuring Terry Eldredge, whose departure from the Grascals has recently been announced.  We also included several songs from a brand-new recording by a long-standing Connecticut Bluegrass band:  Grass Routes.  Their latest recording is called, "Buffalo Nickel, Liberty Dime."

An occasional "feature" this Summer will be a spotlight on certain letters of the alphabet, meaning on some weeks, we will choose a letter and make it a "sponsor" of the program.  This week, we started at the beginning of the alphabet with a baker's dozen tunes from individual performers and bands whose name starts with the letter A.  The list included Bluegrass Hall of Famers Eddie Adcock, Red Allen, and Mike Auldridge, as well as bands like Avery County, Jay Armsworthy & Eastern Tradition, ASH & W, Tom Adams, and Paul Adkins & the Borderline Band, just to name a few.  What letter will we choose next?  Keep listening to find out...

We'll be looking for you once again this coming Sunday.  Hope you have a fine week!

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 5/12/2019

My mother, Eleanor Orlomoski, with her only daughter
During Sunday's show on Mother's Day, our primary focus was on MOM, as it should be.  We shared lots of songs celebrating moms still with us and moms who live on only in memory, but either way, there's no question that none of us would be here without MOM.  Hope you enjoyed your day!

In addition to songs about mom, we shared a whole lot of brand-new music, too.  Among the newer selections were tunes from Carolina Road, Christian Davis, Big Country Bluegrass, Merle Monroe, the Larry Stephenson Band, the Cadleys, Dale Ann Bradley, Blue Moon Rising, Irene Kelley, Mile Twelve, and Joe Mullins & the Radio Ramblers.

Hope you were able to join us for Sunday's show, but if not, you'll get another chance on Sunday afternoon, 4-7PM.

Have a great week!

Amy O.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 5/5/2019

Sunday's show was one for remembering a Bluegrass Hall of Famer and introducing a whole lot of new music.  Hope you were able to tune in for a bit, at least.

John Starling with Ben Eldredge & Tom Gray
Bluegrass Hall of Fame induction
Raleigh, NC
October 2, 2014
On May 2nd, one of the founding members of the Seldom Scene -- Dr. John Starling -- died at the age of 79.  Starling's manner of singing was not in the "high lonesome" style, and in that way, he was able to spark an interest in Bluegrass for some who may not have otherwise had any interest in the music.  In 2014, the Bluegrass Hall of Fame inducted Starling into it's ranks, along with other original Seldom Scene-ers Mike Auldridge and Ben Eldredge (other Seldom Scene founders John Duffey and Tom Gray had been inducted into the Bluegrass Hall of Fame earlier with the "classic" grouping of Country Gentlemen).  Though John Starling had not made records in recent years, his influence will be forever felt in the world of Bluegrass music.

Sunday also happened to be a major day for sharing new Bluegrass music, as we debuted selections from Nu-Blu, Jerry Salley, Irene Kelley, Merle Monroe, Aaron Bibelhauser, Buddy Melton & Milan Miller, Blue Moon Rising, Sally Berry, and Ronnie Bowman

Hope you enjoyed our program today.  Please consider joining us once more next Sunday afternoon, 4-7PM.

Have a good week!

Amy O.
