Playlist - 7/24/2016

Hi Folks.

Last Sunday's show was heavily laden with new music from some fine bluegrass musicians on today's scene.

Folks like Alex Leach; Larry Efaw & The Bluegrass Mountaineers; Steve Gulley & New Pinnacle; The Hot Flashes; David Davis; Special Consensus; Travers Chandler; Mickey Galyean and Cullen's Bridge; Jeff Scroggins and Colorado (who will be appearing at Podunk in a couple of weeks); Kristin Scott Benson; O'Connor Band with Mark O'Connor; Rickey Wasson; Lou Reid & Carolina; and Rob Ikes & Trey Hensley.

I played a good bit of Heritage Corner bluegrass from LPs as well including tracks from The Mountain Ramblers (with Cullen Galyean), The Lilly Brothers & Don Stover live in Japan, Jim Eanes with Red Smiley, Red Allen, and The Sloas Brothers.

I hope you enjoyed what you heard.  Be sure to tune in this coming Sunday when Amy will make the banjos and fiddles ring on Bluegrass Cafe.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 7/17/2016

On a lazy summer Sunday afternoon, our "show goal" was to share songs from the newly-released sophomore recording from that super-successful "cover band" of Lester Flatt & Earl Scruggs & the Foggy Mountain Boys:  the Earls Of Leicester.  This supergroup makes recordings that sound remarkably similar to those original FMB classics, and it appears that the Earls (Jerry Douglas, Charlie Cushman, Johnny Warren, Barry Bales, Jeff White, Shawn Camp) are thoroughly enjoying themselves when they're performing these "new" songs.  Will this second record -- "Rattle & Roar" on Rounder Records -- be as successful as their self-titled first recording?  Hard to say, but we'll find out soon enough, no doubt.

Ricky Skaggs at Indian Ranch - 1988ish
In addition to several selections from the Earls, we heard songs from a couple of birthday celebrants this week.  Ricky Skaggs celebrates birthday number 62 on July 18th, and legendary fiddler Bobby Hicks will turn 83 on July 21st.

While there wasn't too, too much brand new music to be heard on Sunday's show, there was a little.  In addition to several songs from the Earls Of Leicester, there was late 2015/2016 music from the Del McCoury Band, the Spinney Brothers, Danny Paisley & the Southern Grass, Lou Reid & Carolina, and the Hot Flashes.

Hope you enjoyed the show.  Be sure to join Jim on the radio next Sunday afternoon:  4-7PM ~ and have a good week!

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 7/10/2016

Happy Birthday, Jesse McReynolds!
For Sunday's show, the plan was to play a whole bunch of music in honor of a Bluegrass Hall of Famer who celebrated his 87th birthday on July 9th:  Jesse McReynolds.  While that was our primary "mission" for this week, we also managed to squeeze in a whole bunch more wonderful music during the show.  Hope you enjoyed it!

We didn't forget the newer music this week, either.  The 2016 and late 2015 music included selections from the Grascals, Lou Reid & Carolina, Jeff White, the Kathy Kallick Band, Junior Sisk & Ramblers Choice, David Parmley & Cardinal Tradition, Edgar Loudermilk, the Boxcars, Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, the Spinney Brothers, and Joe Mullins & the Radio Ramblers.

Hope you enjoyed something you heard during the show.  Be sure to join us once again next Sunday afternoon for three big hours of Bluegrass Cafe starting at 4PM.

Enjoy the week!

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 7/3/2016

Oh ring, oh ring you freedom bell...
Here in the U.S.A., it's a big Independence Day weekend!  Our playlist on Sunday afternoon reflected a bit of that, with Bluegrass versions of Sousa's "Stars And Stripes Forever," "America The Beautiful," and even the National Anthem.  For good measure, we even threw in a non-Bluegrass version of a George M. Cohan song.  Best wishes to all for a Happy (and safe) 4th of July!

David Parmley at the Jenny Brook Bluegrass Festival, June 2016.
In addition to the patriotic tunes, we shared music from a couple of brand-new projects.  First up, there was the very first recorded project from a relatively new band:  David Parmley & Cardinal Tradition.  This band is just as the name implies:  David Parmley paying homage to his musical heritage with lots of songs from the Bluegrass Cardinals repertoire, mixed with some excellent country covers and a few new songs.  Great stuff.  There is also a new record from the one-and-only Lou Reid and his band, Lou Reid & Carolina.  We'll be enjoying more from each of these records in future weeks on our radio show.

Happy 70th Birthday, Jimmy Gaudreau!
The United States of America may be turning 240 this week, but there were some Bluegrass (and Bluegrass-related) birthdays to celebrate, too.  To that end, we played birthday songs in memory of the "Uncle Of Bluegrass," Charlie Monroe (born July 4, 1903), as well as the great Charlie Louvin (born July 7, 1927).  We also played several songs from Rhode Island's own Jimmy Gaudreau -- born July 3, 1946 -- as he celebrates his 70th birthday.

Hope you have a wonderful week, and be sure to join Jim for another full 3-hour Bluegrass Cafe next Sunday!
