"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 1/29/2023

Before it's time for another Sunday edition of our Bluegrass Cafe, guess I need to post this playlist from our January 29th show!

The show featured music from a few of the SPBGMA Award winners for 2023.  The Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass Music in America held their annual gathering over the weekend, and their fan-voted awards were given out on Saturday evening.  The big winners were the Kody Norris Show, but other award winners from whom we heard included Jaelee Roberts, Seth Mulder & Midnight Run, the Po' Ramblin' Boys, and Balsam Range.  If you'd like to know more about all of the winners, click here.  

There was a good bit of new music to share this week.  We shared songs from the long-awaited new recording from the Gibson Brothers ("Darkest Hour" on their own label, Bull Run Records), as well as new selections from the Tim Raybon Band, the Farm Hands, Route 3, Darren Nicholson, and Billy Strings.  

And if all of that wasn't enough, we had a few Bluegrass birthdays to celebrate, including those of four elite members of the Bluegrass community who were all born on February 1st:  Del McCoury (1939), Tom Gray (1941), David Parmley (1959), and Jason Carter (1973).  Other birthday celebrants in this show were Becky Buller and Lynwood Lunsford.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 1/8/2023

Happy New Year!  Our first live-in-the-studio Bluegrass Cafe for 2023 featured a look back at some of the finest Bluegrass releases for 2022.  In fact, our first hour (plus a bit more) included (mostly) 2022 releases from all kind of bands and performers, including the Tennessee Bluegrass Band, Dan Tyminski, Greg Blake, Seth Mulder & Midnight Run, the Junior Sisk Band, Laura Orshaw, Joe Mullins & the Radio Ramblers, Authentic Unlimited, the Gibson Brothers, Del McCoury, and others.  Great music.

On this January 8th, we celebrated in song the birth anniversary of the late Randall Hylton (January 8, 1945 - March 19, 2001).  Randall Hylton was one of the most prolific songwriters in the history of Bluegrass music, and we shared ten of his songs during our program.  And we can't forget that the King -- Elvis Presley -- also would have celebrated his birthday on January 8th, so we shared his version of "Blue Moon Of Kentucky" during this broadcast.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 1/1/2023 -- an encore presentation!

It's a new year!  We aren't allowed to be at UConn today broadcasting live, but we're happy to share a Bluegrass Cafe from the COVID-era archives with you on this first day of 2023.  If you're listening, you're probably aware that this show originally aired on January 3, 2020.  During our three hours for that broadcast, we shared loads of music from the then-recently-deceased Tony Rice (June 8, 1951 - December 25, 2020), and we included birthday tributes to two members of the Country Music Hall of Fame who are wickedly important in the history of Bluegrass -- and really ALL -- music:  Hank Williams (September 17, 1923 - January 1, 1953) and Earl Scruggs (January 6, 1924 - March 28, 2012).

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 12/18/2022

Happy New Year!  

I'm super late in getting our last live-in-the-studio playlist for Bluegrass Cafe posted here.  Where does the time go?

Anyhow, as you can imagine, during our final show of the year, we shared lots of great Christmas music, mostly Bluegrass but with a few classic country offerings, as well.  We also included a couple of newer Christmas selections from 2022, including music Rick Lang, Don Rigsby, Becky Buller, and Joe Mullins & the Radio Ramblers.  

There were even four new songs played on the December 18th show that were not Christmas songs at all.  Among them:  a track from the new solo recording by Becky Isaacs Bowman (featuring Del McCoury on the lead vocal), Larry Sparks, David Parmley, and a duet from Kristy Cox & Marty Raybon.

In order to allow their employees to have a complete vacation, the University of Connecticut decided to lock the Student Union completely both on Christmas Day and New Year's Day, but we plan to be back on the air with you LIVE next Sunday, January 8th.  Until then, hope you had a great Christmas and that you'll enjoy lots of health and happiness in 2023!
