Fill-in For "Bluegrass Rules!" - 7/29/2014

Hi Folks.

I had the opportunity to fill-in for James and Cathy Ward on their show, "Bluegrass Rules," on this Tuesday afternoon.  James and Cathy were kind enough to fill-in for Marti and me on "Red Rooster Party" for a couple of weeks this year while we were away, so it felt good to return the favor.

I packed a bunch of music into the show's three hours - 59 songs to be exact!  I had a blast while doing the show, too.

Much new music was played included songs from The Missy Werner Band, The Roland White Band, Travis Frye, Amy Gallatin & Stillwaters, Wayne Taylor (Appaloosa), Doyle Lawson, The Roys, and more.

Check out the playlist below.

Playlist - 7/27/2014 - Becky Buller

Hi Folks.

Becky Buller joined Bluegrass Cafe to discuss her upcoming album, 'Tween Earth And Sky" which contains a version of Bill Monroe's instrumental "Southern Flavor" with lyrics!  Becky told us how she came to make the recording with former Blue Grass Boys, and we heard "Southern Flavor" as well as another single from the album.  Besides being a great performer, Becky is a well-respected songwriter, and to demonstrate you need look no further than the playlist where songs Becky wrote are highlighted.

We also heard from Roger Moss who brought us up-top-date on the upcoming Podunk Bluegrass Festival August 7-9 at Hebron Lions Fairgrounds in Hebron, CT.  For more information about Podunk, check out their web site at http://podunkbluegrass.com

Besides Becky's new songs, we introduced new music from Wayne Taylor (Appaloosa), Larry Sparks, and aired many other recently-released albums.

For the Heritage Corner we heard Earl Taylor & Jim McCall, Don Reno & Bill Harrell, Ralph Stanley from his early post-Carter period, Joe Val, Molly O'Day, The Sloas Brothers, and Carl Story.

Amy will be with you next Sunday making the banjos and fiddles ring, and I will be filling in for James and Cathy Ward on Bluegrass Rules Tuesday afternoon 2-5pm ET, so tune in for more great bluegrass music.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 7/20/2014

Sunday's show was spent celebrating the birthdays of Ricky Skaggs and Jesse McReynolds, as well as revisiting 1962's "Rose Maddox Sings Bluegrass" LP.  We shared some brand-spanking new music from the legendary Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, the return of the Bluegrass Brothers, and a new solo record from Blue Highway's Tim Stafford.  If all of that wasn't enough excitement for a Sunday afternoon, we even gave away two day passes for the wonderful Podunk Bluegrass Festival, coming up in just a couple of weeks (August 7-9) at the Hebron Lions Fairgrounds in Hebron, CT.  Phew!  Hope you heard at least a little bit of the show...

Jim will join you for next Sunday afternoon's Bluegrass Cafe, so be sure to be with him beginning at 4PM, won't you?

Have a fine week!

Playlist - 7/13/2014 Mike Daniels Interview

Hi Folks.

I had been away for nearly a month on business and personal travel, so it was very enjoyable to get back behind the WHUS microphone and explore much of the new music that arrived during my absence.

The highlight of the day was an interview with Mike Daniels -- the banjo picker with the Eastern Kentucky band Turning Ground.  Mike, besides being an excellent musician, is part of bluegrass history because he was Hylo Brown's last banjo picker in a string that included Jim Smoak, Earl Scruggs, Curtis McPeake, Lowell Varney, Billy Edwards, and other great pickers.  We heard about that as well as the new CD from Turning Ground titled Cell Of Mine, and heard several tracks from that new disc.  Many thanks to Mike for taking time out of his Sunday to speak to New England bluegrass fans.

Other new music included titles from Laurie Lewis & Kathy Kallick (a tribute to Vern & Ray!), Michael Cleveland and Flamekeeper, Balsam Range, Frank Solivan & Dirty Kitchen, Becky Buller, Roland White, Dry Branch Fire Squad, gospel band Crosspoint, Steve Gulley, Mike Scott & Friends, and Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver.

From the Heritage Corner we heard both sides of a rare single from Fred Pike - Bill Rawlings and the Twin River Boys, and songs from Mac Martin, Earl Taylor & Jim McCall, and The Lilly Brothers & Don Stover.

We hope you enjoyed the show.  Tune into WHUS next Sunday when Amy will make the banjos and fiddles ring.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 7/6/2014

Wrapping up a big holiday weekend with some Bluegrass is never a bad idea, right?  That's what we'd like to think, anyway!  Hope you were able to listen to a bit of the Bluegrass Cafe on Sunday afternoon on what was an absolutely beautiful summer day to end the Fourth of July holiday weekend.

Happy Birthday to the "Uncle of Bluegrass,"
Charlie Monroe (born July 4, 1903).
On Sunday, a few Bluegrass (and Bluegrass-related) performers who celebrated birthdays over the past few days were remembered, including the late Charlie Monroe (born July 4, 1903), Peter Rowan (born July 4, 1942), and Jimmy Gaudreau (born July 3, 1946).  To remember all of these folks, we shared a bit of each birthday performer's music.

Lots of newer Bluegrass music hit the
Coming from the Spinneys - Fall 2014...
airwaves, too, including selections from forthcoming projects by both the Crowe Brothers and the Spinney Brothers, as well as new music from 2014 recordings by Flatt Lonesome, Rachel Burge & Blue Dawning, Michael Cleveland & Flamekeeper, the Moore Brothers, Dave Adkins, Balsam Range, and Feller & Hill.

Hope you enjoyed your holiday weekend, and that you'll be sure to join Jim back in the Bluegrass Cafe next Sunday afternoon beginning at 4PM.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 6/29/2014

Eric & Leigh Gibson (with Jesse Brock on mandolin) took a
walk down Memory Lane at a Saturday Jenny Brook workshop.
This past weekend, I spent 4 1/2 days in lovely Tunbridge, Vermont at the outstanding Jenny Brook Bluegrass Festival.  I came back to eastern Connecticut on Sunday morning, fresh with the sounds of favorite bands I'd seen perform in Vermont (Gibson Brothers, Spinney Brothers, the Boxcars), as well as bands I'd heard but had never previously seen, like Feller & Hill & the Bluegrass Buckaroos and Bob Amos & Catamount Crossing.  It was an absolutely outstanding time, and if you happened to miss it, here's a little piece about the festival from Burlington, Vermont TV station, WCAX.  Great stuff!  Click the video link in this story...

http://www.wcax.com/story/25891712/jenny-brook-family-bluegrass-festival-underway-in-tunbridge

Other music featured on Sunday included brand-spanking new music from Missy Werner (her self-produced recording is "Turn This Heart Around"), as well as newer music from the likes of Richard Bennett, Bryan Sutton, John Bowman, Amy Gallatin & Stillwaters, Mike Scott & Friends, Balsam RangeBecky Buller, and the Roys.

Hope everyone has a fantastic (albeit somewhat soggy) 4th!  We'll be looking for you once more on Sunday afternoon for another Bluegrass Cafe...
