WHUS "Bluegrass Cafe" - 6/22/2014

Happy Birthday to banjo legend, Eddie Adcock -- born 6/21/1938.
Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe featured a birthday tribute or two (#76 on June 21st for Eddie Adcock and #100 for the legendary Lester Flatt on June 19th), new music from Connecticut's Amy Gallatin & Stillwaters and guitar picker/singer, Richard Bennett, and a whole bunch of music from performers who'll be appearing this coming weekend at the delightful Jenny Brook Bluegrass Festival in Tunbridge, Vermont.  Why, we even gave away a few CDs from Jenny Brook performers as well as a day ticket to the festival!  It was a pretty full show -- sure hope you able to listen to a little bit of it...

If you happened to miss us this week, you'll have another opportunity to join us in the Bluegrass Cafe again NEXT Sunday afternoon, 4-7PM.  See you then!

Amy

Playlist - 6/15/2014 - Father's Day

Hi Folks!

This was our Father's Day show, so the first half was nearly all songs with a father theme.

The last half of the show was new and old.  We introduced cuts from a new Tribute to Bill Napier produced by Johnny Jackson and James Stiltner, several songs from the amazing teenage Flatt-&-Scruggs-style pickers from West Virginia -- Marteka and William Lake, new music from Balsam Range, The Seldom Scene, Feller & Hill, The Osborne Brothers, Rich In Tradition, James King, and Dry Branch Fire Squad.

Heritage Corner music came from The Lilly Brothers & Don Stover, The Vern Williams Band, The Sloas Brothers, Jimmy Martin &The Osborne Brothers, Carl Story, The Chuck Wagon Gang, and The Stanley Brothers.

Tune in next week when Amy will bring you the Bluegrass Cafe.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 6/8/2014 (plus, a fill-in playlist from June 6th)

Sunday afternoon in eastern Connecticut featured an absolutely gorgeous blue sky and temperatures in the 80s.  In short, it was perfect festival weather!  Still, we couldn't be outside and still do the radio show (not to mention that there was no outdoor Bluegrass festival that we knew of in the area), so we featured some music from folks who'll be performing at a few upcoming New England festivals, including the wonderful Jenny Brook Bluegrass Festival in Tunbridge, Vermont (June 26-29), as well as two festivals in Connecticut:  a smaller event featuring regional bands at Mineral Springs Family Campground in Stafford Springs (July 4-5) and the return of the Podunk Bluegrass Festival in its new home in Hebron (August 7-9).  Get out and support Bluegrass music this summer at a festival near you!

A Hundred Years From Now...folks will be
celebrating the 200th birthday of Lester Flatt!
Another feature of Sunday afternoon's show included several songs from the Lester Flatt songbook -- both classic Bluegrass songs he wrote, as well as songs he performed either as a member of Bill Monroe & His Blue Grass Boys, or during his partnership with Earl Scruggs, or fronting the Nashville Grass.  As June 19th marks the 100-year anniversary of the birth of a true Bluegrass legend, it seems only appropriate to share as much of Lester Flatt's music as we can.  I'll continue to do my part...especially during this centennial month.

We also remembered James Alan Shelton, who lost a brief battle with pancreatic cancer earlier this week.  This super-talented guitarist was only 52 years old, but, by all accounts, he was able to experience his dream job for the last twenty years by being the lead guitarist and road manager for Ralph Stanley & the Clinch Mountain Boys.

While Jim played a track from the new Balsam Range recording last week, on Sunday's show, we played a few more selections from their latest project on Mountain Home, "Five."  This CD is bound to please the band's many fans, and you can bet you'll be hearing lots more of it during future weeks of Bluegrass Cafe.

Following the playlist for this week's Bluegrass Cafe, I've included a playlist for a mostly classic country fill-in I did on Friday morning, June 6th.  As there was a tiny bit of Bluegrass showcased during that three-hour fill-in show, it may be of interest to take a look.

Have yourself a delightful week, and be sure to join Jim once more in next Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe!

Playlist - 6/1/2014

Hi Folks.

Songs from the Andy Griffith Show; new music from Dry Branch Fire Squad, Balsam Range, and old timey music from The South Carolina Broadcasters were the highlights of the show.  Dry Branch and The SC Broadcasters were just coming off a very enjoyable Strawberry Park Bluegrass Festival, so we kept the energy going. Other festival favorites represented here were The Grascals, Danny Roberts (with the Grascals), and Claire Lynch.

We played a lot of vinyl, too.

We hope you enjoyed something you heard.
