"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 4/23/2017

There was all sorts of birthday celebrating going on during Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe.  We remembered the birthdays of two wonderful performers (and songwriters) of days gone by, and the birthdays of two modern-day Bluegrass treasures.  Hope you were able to join us for the celebrations in song!

We remembered the late Hylo Brown (April 20, 1922 - January 17, 2003) by sharing two songs he performed and four songs he wrote.  We also included several songs from the pen (and sometimes mandolin playing and singing) of the late Ira Louvin (April 21, 1924 - June 20, 1965).  By all accounts, Ira was the Louvin brother with the temper, but while he and brother Charlie didn't always get along, there's no doubt that they were able to create some really wonderful music together.  If you would like to learn more about the Louvin Brothers, here are two fine reading suggestions:

  • Louvin, Charlie with Benjamin Whitmer.  Satan Is Real:  The Ballad Of The Louvin Brothers. (ITBooks, 2012).
  • Wolfe, Charles.  In Close Harmony:  The Story Of The Louvin Brothers.  (University Of Mississippi Press, 1991).
Other birthday celebrants included Doyle Lawson (born April 20, 1944) and Roland White (born April 23, 1938).  We could have easily filled up the three hours with music from the many bands that these two Bluegrass legends have been members of through the years, but limited ourselves to a just a couple from each.  Next time...

New music was part of the show on Sunday, too.  New music from 2017 (and late 2016) hit the airwaves from Bobby Osborne, Tom Ewing, Southern Rail, Junior Sisk & Ramblers Choice, Big Country Bluegrass, Karl Shiflett & Big Country Show, Terry Baucom, Doyle Lawson & Paul Williams, and the Gibson Brothers.

Hope you can join me once again this coming Sunday, 4-7PM.

Enjoy the week!

Playlist - 4/16/2017 - Easter

Hi Folks.
South Carolina Broadcasters

It's been a while since I've been around the Bluegrass Cafe, but I had a fine time filling in for Amy on Easter Sunday.

Since the idea was to have a good time, I did so by playing a lot of classic bluegrass and a gospel set with an Easter theme.

We gave away two CDs from the South Carolina Broadcasters - one is their newest effort titled "We'll Sing Once More" and the other is "Best of the Lowe Vintage Radio Show" compiled from their 15 month 4-days-a-week live show that aired in their hometown of Mount Airy NC in 2015 and 2016.  I had the good fortune to be their announcer for this series.

New music included songs from The Gibson Brothers, Lawson & Williams, Bobby Osborne, and Johnny & Edith Jackson with James Stiltner.

I hope you enjoyed the show.  It may have been the last Bluegrass Cafe I ever host as I will be moving back home to NC in a few months or less.  I invite all to visit with the Southern New England bluegrass community at Killingly Grange this coming Saturday evening as there will be a farewell jam in my honor hosted by Nick Anderson and Shady Creek.  Doors open at 6pm and the Grange will be have food and refreshments available.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 4/9/2017

For Sunday's edition of the Bluegrass Cafe, something inspired me to play a whole bunch of wonderful songs all about one subject that continues to fascinate young and old alike:  trains.  Even though Americans (who don't live in big metropolitan areas) don't really travel on trains as frequently as we did sixty or seventy years ago, the interest in this particular mode of transportation lives on.  In 2015, Russell Moore & IIIrd Tyme Out released a song that suggested a lot of things might not have ever happened "Had It Not Been For The Train."  If you've not heard the clever lyrics in this song (co-written by Eli Johnston and Kevin McKinnon), check it out here:

Carrying on the tradition:  Ralph Stanley II &
the Clinch Mountain Boys will have a CD
available this summer

The show wasn't all about those 30+ train songs, though.  We also included a few brand-new selections from recently released or soon-to-be released recordings from these performers:  Ralph Stanley II & the Clinch Mountain Boys, Tim O'Brien, Shawn Camp (from the wonderful autobiography-in-song recording about Mac Wiseman), Junior Sisk & Ramblers Choice, Danny Barnes, Rickey Wasson, Aaron "Frosty" Foster, Larry Cordle, and Flashback.

This coming Sunday is Easter Sunday, and I'm delighted that Jim will be joining you for Bluegrass Cafe.  Be sure to join him for some top-notch traditional and old-time Bluegrass, won't you?

Happy Easter!

Amy

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 4/2/2017

Sports preemptions are a common thing at WHUS in the springtime.  This week, both Red Rooster Party and the Bluegrass Cafe were expected to be preempted, at least partially.  It turned out that there was a full-three hour broadcast of Bluegrass Cafe, plus we added twenty minutes before 4PM when the UConn Baseball game ended early.  Go figure.
Merle Haggard (4/6/1937 - 4/6/2016)

We used that extra twenty minutes to share songs from the music catalog of the legendary Merle Haggard, who would have turned 80 years old on April 6th.  The Hag left us with an incredible legacy of music, and so many of his songs have been given a Bluegrass treatment down through the years.  Including the songs we played in the first twenty minutes pre-BGC, we shared thirteen Haggard songs from performers as varied as the Osborne Brothers, the Grascals, the Spinney Brothers, Flatt Lonesome, the Gibson Brothers, the Seldom Scene, and, of course, the Hag, himself.

Newer music was shared on Sunday, too, as we included selections from new and/or recent projects from Junior Sisk & Ramblers Choice, Rhonda Vincent & the RageFlashback, Jeff White, the Earls of LeicesterRickey Wasson, Dailey & Vincent, the Garrett Newton Band, the Gibson Brothers, Doyle Lawson & Paul Williams, Michael Cleveland, Big Country Bluegrass, Karl Shiflett & Big Country Show, Larry Cordle, and Becky Buller.

Hope you enjoyed the show, and that you'll consider joining us once again next Sunday afternoon at 4PM for a sports-less edition of our Bluegrass Cafe!

Enjoy the week!
