Playlist - 4/16/2017 - Easter

Hi Folks.
South Carolina Broadcasters

It's been a while since I've been around the Bluegrass Cafe, but I had a fine time filling in for Amy on Easter Sunday.

Since the idea was to have a good time, I did so by playing a lot of classic bluegrass and a gospel set with an Easter theme.

We gave away two CDs from the South Carolina Broadcasters - one is their newest effort titled "We'll Sing Once More" and the other is "Best of the Lowe Vintage Radio Show" compiled from their 15 month 4-days-a-week live show that aired in their hometown of Mount Airy NC in 2015 and 2016.  I had the good fortune to be their announcer for this series.

New music included songs from The Gibson Brothers, Lawson & Williams, Bobby Osborne, and Johnny & Edith Jackson with James Stiltner.

I hope you enjoyed the show.  It may have been the last Bluegrass Cafe I ever host as I will be moving back home to NC in a few months or less.  I invite all to visit with the Southern New England bluegrass community at Killingly Grange this coming Saturday evening as there will be a farewell jam in my honor hosted by Nick Anderson and Shady Creek.  Doors open at 6pm and the Grange will be have food and refreshments available.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 4/9/2017

For Sunday's edition of the Bluegrass Cafe, something inspired me to play a whole bunch of wonderful songs all about one subject that continues to fascinate young and old alike:  trains.  Even though Americans (who don't live in big metropolitan areas) don't really travel on trains as frequently as we did sixty or seventy years ago, the interest in this particular mode of transportation lives on.  In 2015, Russell Moore & IIIrd Tyme Out released a song that suggested a lot of things might not have ever happened "Had It Not Been For The Train."  If you've not heard the clever lyrics in this song (co-written by Eli Johnston and Kevin McKinnon), check it out here:

Carrying on the tradition:  Ralph Stanley II &
the Clinch Mountain Boys will have a CD
available this summer

The show wasn't all about those 30+ train songs, though.  We also included a few brand-new selections from recently released or soon-to-be released recordings from these performers:  Ralph Stanley II & the Clinch Mountain Boys, Tim O'Brien, Shawn Camp (from the wonderful autobiography-in-song recording about Mac Wiseman), Junior Sisk & Ramblers Choice, Danny Barnes, Rickey Wasson, Aaron "Frosty" Foster, Larry Cordle, and Flashback.

This coming Sunday is Easter Sunday, and I'm delighted that Jim will be joining you for Bluegrass Cafe.  Be sure to join him for some top-notch traditional and old-time Bluegrass, won't you?

Happy Easter!

Amy

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 4/2/2017

Sports preemptions are a common thing at WHUS in the springtime.  This week, both Red Rooster Party and the Bluegrass Cafe were expected to be preempted, at least partially.  It turned out that there was a full-three hour broadcast of Bluegrass Cafe, plus we added twenty minutes before 4PM when the UConn Baseball game ended early.  Go figure.
Merle Haggard (4/6/1937 - 4/6/2016)

We used that extra twenty minutes to share songs from the music catalog of the legendary Merle Haggard, who would have turned 80 years old on April 6th.  The Hag left us with an incredible legacy of music, and so many of his songs have been given a Bluegrass treatment down through the years.  Including the songs we played in the first twenty minutes pre-BGC, we shared thirteen Haggard songs from performers as varied as the Osborne Brothers, the Grascals, the Spinney Brothers, Flatt Lonesome, the Gibson Brothers, the Seldom Scene, and, of course, the Hag, himself.

Newer music was shared on Sunday, too, as we included selections from new and/or recent projects from Junior Sisk & Ramblers Choice, Rhonda Vincent & the RageFlashback, Jeff White, the Earls of LeicesterRickey Wasson, Dailey & Vincent, the Garrett Newton Band, the Gibson Brothers, Doyle Lawson & Paul Williams, Michael Cleveland, Big Country Bluegrass, Karl Shiflett & Big Country Show, Larry Cordle, and Becky Buller.

Hope you enjoyed the show, and that you'll consider joining us once again next Sunday afternoon at 4PM for a sports-less edition of our Bluegrass Cafe!

Enjoy the week!

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 3/26/2017

Between sports-shortened (or totally preempted) radio shows and vacation time for me, I haven't spent much time in our Bluegrass Cafe this month.  On Sunday, though, we had a full three-hour block of time to play some music, and I tried to take advantage of the situation.
In 2005, a Jenny Brook reunion of the Gibson Brothers
with Junior Barber on Dobro.

Junior at the 2011 Jenny Brook with cousins Julie & Tom in
BearTracks.

As I don't think I've been on the air since the passing of Junior Barber on March 8th, it seemed very fitting to share a good bit of Junior's wonderful sound on records he made with the Gibson Brothers, on his own, and with his most-recent group, BearTracks.  Junior was an amazing musician and a super-nice man, and he will be greatly missed.

In addition to a whole bunch of classic Bluegrass, we also heard some newer music on Sunday from the likes of Junior Sisk & Ramblers Choice, Doyle Lawson & Paul Williams, Big Country Bluegrass, Karl Shiflett & Big Country Show, the Gibson Brothers, and Flashback.

For our closing theme this week, we shared a number by Buddy Pendleton, a southwest Virginia fiddler who died on March 24th at the age of 81.

Big thanks to Cathy Day for sitting in for the show on March 19th.

Hope you can join us for another sports-shortened show this coming Sunday (April 2nd), as we know we might start a bit late due to a UConn Baseball broadcast which is supposed to end at 4PM, and the show will be cut short at 6PM for UConn Women's Basketball in the Final 4.  We appreciate your patience, and hope you can still join us for whatever portion of Bluegrass Cafe will remain on Sunday.  See you then!

Enjoy the week!

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 3/5/2016

"New" music from 1963 is
on the way from Eddie Adcock
It's March, and that means basketball tournament time for the University of Connecticut's basketball teams.  While a 5PM scheduled game for the Women's Basketball team caused Sunday's show to be abbreviated to just sixty minutes, we tried to squeeze in as much music as possible in that short time...and I think we accomplished our goal.

While the show was shortened, new music still played a big part in our programming, as we included new music from recent or forthcoming projects by Big Country Bluegrass, the Gibson Brothers, Doyle Lawson & Paul WilliamsJunior Sisk & Ramblers Choice, the new autobiographical project by and about Mac Wiseman, and a track from a "lost" recording from 1963 featuring banjo legend (and Bluegrass Hall of Famer), Eddie Adcock.  There was also a track from a new Larry Sparks (another Bluegrass Hall of Famer) compilation from Rebel Records.

In addition, we gave away a couple of tickets to an upcoming show in our area featuring the Feinberg Brothers that is being held as a fundraising show for the non-profit Canterbury Historical Society.  More information on that show is here.

Hope you enjoyed today's "express edition"
of our show.  We'll be looking for you next week...

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 2/26/2017

While I am a bit tardy in posting the playlist from Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe, it's never too late to share...

Looking back, it seems like nearly half of the songs we played were in tribute to one of three music legends who would have celebrated birthdays during the preceding week.  None of these birthday celebrants are still with us, but what would the music world be like without the many songwriting, singing, and musician talents of Don Reno (born February 21, 1926), Ralph Stanley (born February 25, 1927), and Johnny Cash (born February 26, 1932)?  It's too unpleasant to even consider that answer, isn't it?

Besides songs from the catalogs of Reno, Stanley, and Cash, we also heard a few songs from late 2016 and 2017 recordings, including music from the Price Sisters, Michael Cleveland, the Po' Ramblin' Boys, Jeff White, Corrina Rose Logston, the Gibson Brothers, and a new compilation from the Bluegrass Patriots.

It looks like this coming Sunday's show will be an abbreviated one, as there is a Women's Basketball game to be broadcast from 5-7PM.  We'll pack as much music as possible into our 4PM hour, though, so sure hope you can join us!

We'll be looking for you then!

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 2/19/2017

Presidents' Day weekend -- for the last several years, that has meant the big weekend for the Joe Val Bluegrass Festival sponsored by the Boston Bluegrass Union.  This year was no exception, and the BBU folks are to be congratulated on another spectacular edition of this mid-winter tradition.  I arrived at WHUS just in time on Sunday afternoon to bring you what we hope you consider our own little "tradition" -- the Bluegrass Cafe.  Hope you enjoyed it!

Got to hear the fabulous Danny Paisley & the Southern Grass
just before leaving Joe Val for WHUS.  Yay!
As always, the Joe Val Festival was full of talented performers representing all different types of Bluegrass, from very traditional to the far reaches of the music.  We shared music from some of those performers on Sunday's show, including Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, Blue Highway, Danny Paisley & the Southern Grass, the Feinberg Brothers, Danny Paisley & the Southern Grass, Sideline, the Grascals, Joe Mullins & the Radio Ramblers, and the Earls Of Leicester.

We celebrated a couple of Bluegrass birthdays during Sunday's show -- the shared birthdays of Dudley Connell (born February 18, 1956) and Don Rigsby (born February 18, 1968), as well as few songs in celebration of the life of banjo innovator, songwriter, and Bluegrass Hall of Famer, Don Reno (born February 21, 1927).  In fact, Reno is so important to the history of Bluegrass music, our plan for next Sunday's broadcast is to focus a bit more on Don Reno.

Newer music played a small part in Sunday's show, too, as we included music from the very fine Mac Wiseman's childhood story in song collection ("I Sang The Song" on Mountain Fever Records), plus songs from the newest recordings by the Gibson Brothers, Terry Baucom & the Dukes Of Drive, Big Country Bluegrass, Chris Jones & the Night Drivers, and Karl Shiflett & Big Country Show.  In addition, we included a couple of songs from a new compilation recording of a wonderful Colorado band, the Bluegrass Patriots.

For good measure, I even included a couple of songs from a "new" acquisition from the Joe Val Yard Sale -- a 1971 copy of the Country Gentlemen's "Sound Off" LP on Rebel Records.

Hope you were able to listen in on Sunday, but if not, we'll be looking for you next Sunday afternoon for another edition of our Bluegrass Cafe.

Enjoy the week!
